John 3:36 He who believes on the Son has everlasting life, and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides upon him.

Yes, only through belief in Christ do we have life. Everlasting in the phrase is translated as "aionios" which means "pertaining to an age" aka "agelasting".

Eventually everyone will believe in Christ and be saved.

Colossians 1:19-20: Through Christ "God was pleased ... to reconcile to himself all things, whether on earth or in heaven, making peace by the blood of His cross."

Matthew 18:8 And if your hand or your foot causes you to offend, cut them off and throw them from you. It is better for you to enter into life lame or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.

9 And if your eye offends you, pluck it out and throw it from you. It is better for you to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into the hell of fire.

Everlasting fire meaning agelasting fire, thus temporary mental anguish in Sheol, until they recognize their sins and are convinced to believe in Christ with faith only. [And the plucking of the eye is to be taken metaphorically, since our bodies are temples of God and we shouldn’t harm ourselves]

2 Corinthians 5:19: "In Christ God was reconciling the world to himself."

Matthew 7:13 Go in through the narrow gate, for wide is the gate and broad is the way that leads to destruction, and many there are who go in through it.

14 Because narrow is the gate and constricted is the way which leads to life, and there are few who find it.

The narrow gate is believing in Christ with faith alone. The wide path is doing anything else to be washed of sins. Everyone will eventually go through the narrow path, no matter how long it takes.

Romans 11:32: "For God has consigned all to disobedience, that He may have mercy on all."

So if people reject Jesus of their own free will then die they are tortured until they accept him?

God has certainly violated the will of people, take Jobe, for example.

Sadly, many of God's children don't want a relationship with him, mainly because (I believe) they have been blinded and deceived by the dark forces that permeate this world. If they knew God they would, without any doubt, run to him!

God will bring his disobedient children to him and he will chastise them for their sins but he will also cleanse, heal, and restore them so that they will become perfect and without sin. Why? Because God loves ALL of us and will not allow even one to be lost.

I believe God loves everyone. I don't believe that verse is to be taken literally in that God actually hated Esau. I presume that God was speaking to Esau's sin.

These six things the LORD hates,
The Lord hates this age of sin that traps us, this "aionios" of sin, and wishes to free us to an age, an "aionios" free of sin. And he layed the foundation out through Christ

Colossians 1:20-23

and through him to reconcile to himself all things, whether things on earth or things in heaven, by making peace through his blood, shed on the cross.

This show us that if we have even the smallest amount of faith alone in Christ’s sacrifice on the cross, His blood washes us of all our sins permanently. Because the Holy Spirit begins to dwell inside us permanently as soon as we believe, and will never leave! And all things were reconciled which shows not only is it possible for all of us to be saved by believing in Jesus Christ, but it’s guaranteed that all things on Earth, all things in Heaven, everyone everywhere will become believers in Christ Jesus and be saved permanently and go to Heaven, that is guaranteed!

21 Once you were alienated from God and were enemies in your minds because of[a] your evil behavior.

Notice the word once? It tells us that that alienation was only one time! We were alienated because of sin, our evil behaviour, but after being washed clean by Jesus’ blood, we are free of sin and no longer alienated!

It also shows a change in perspective. As sinners, people have this fear and worry of a God that will punish them, but perfect love casts out fear, and when we believe in Christ with faith alone to wash away our sins, we no longer avoid evil behaviour because of the fear of punishment, but rather because of our love of God! We’ll stumble, fall, seven times a day sometimes, but since we’re already saved, we have a new attitude, a new belief. We recognize sin, and trust in Christ’s sacrifice to help us continually.

22 But now he has reconciled you by Christ’s physical body through death to present you holy in his sight, without blemish and free from accusation—

Without blemish and free from accusation further shows how Christ’s blood from His physical body washes away all our sins.

Colossians 1:23 - The Supremacy of Christ

23 if you continue in your faith, established and firm, and do not move from the hope held out in the gospel. This is the gospel that you heard and that has been proclaimed to every creature under heaven, and of which I, Paul, have become a servant.

First off, we can’t lose our salvation. Once saved always saved, that’s the eternal security of every believer.

if

εἴ (ei)

Conjunction

Strong's 1487: If. A primary particle of conditionality; if, whether, that, etc.

“If” mentions conditionality, which can also mean a condition that’s permanent, like the condition of righteousness when you believe in Christ and are saved permanently.

you continue

ἐπιμένετε (epimenete)

Verb - Present Indicative Active - 2nd Person Plural

Strong's 1961: (a) I remain, tarry, (b) I remain in, persist in. From epi and meno; to stay over, i.e. Remain.

Then demonstrates that we are in the permanent condition of remaining in something.

in [your] faith,

πίστει (pistei)

Noun - Dative Feminine Singular

Strong's 4102: Faith, belief, trust, confidence; fidelity, faithfulness.

And this permanent condition came from our faith, singular, in Jesus Christ.

established

τεθεμελιωμένοι (tethemeliōmenoi)

Verb - Perfect Participle Middle or Passive - Nominative Masculine Plural

Strong's 2311: To found, lay the foundation (lit. and met.). From themelios; to lay a basis for, i.e. erect, or consolidate.

Of course, we can’t lay this foundation ourselves. Who layed the foundation? Who’s the cornerstone of your beliefs? It’s Jesus Christ! He layed the only possible foundation for salvation by dying on the cross and resurrecting 3 days later. Thus, if we have even the smallest amount of trust in that sacrifice, we are permanently saved because that foundation is Jesus Christ and He never fails because Jesus is love and

1 Corinthians 13:8 Love never fails!

Love = Jesus

Love never fails = Jesus never fails.

Yes, the important thing is having all the religions everywhere realize that the only true religion is Christ, but there's many times where a demon can get a lie but sandwich it between two truths, which can get tricky. Yeah, definitely, they shouldn't justify Old Testament demons, especially since scripture specifically warns us against them.

For the lake of fire, I see it as the furnace of affliction mentioned in Isaiah, where it's the suffering a person experiences because of sin, and then they realize that they have sin and this leads them to seeking out the saviour Christ, to wash them of their sins through simple belief. So I agree with you there. The lake of THE fire is not like a campfire, or a bonfire, it's God's fire, Godfire is a good term for it.

For lack of understanding you have believed a false doctrine, and now preach what is false.

The word "everlasting" is not God or kingdom-speak, but is a worldly figure of speech, just as "yesterday, today, and forever" is regarding a place where there is actually no past, present, or future...as it is written, "no shadow of turning"--no time.

So if people reject Jesus of their own free will then die they are tortured until they accept him?
If you believe in eternal conscious torment, then that is a very strange question.
Somehow God is a horrible monster if the torture is limited in duration, but he's fine if it is never-ending?
Not sure what your position on the final judgment is.

All these verses below use the same NT Greek word, "aionios", the Greek word mistranslated as "eternal" and "everlasting" in Matthew 25:46. See bold below. This shows that "aionios" cannot mean eternal or everlasting.

Matthew 13:22
The seed falling among the thorns refers to someone who hears the word, but the worries of this life and the deceitfulness of wealth choke the word, making it unfruitful.

Romans 12:2
Do not conform to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind. Then you will be able to test and approve what God’s will is—his good, pleasing and perfect will.

1 Corinthians 1:20
Where is the wise person? Where is the teacher of the law? Where is the philosopher of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

1 Corinthians 2:8
None of the rulers of this age understood it, for if they had, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.

Ephesians 2:2
in which you used to live when you followed the ways of this world and of the ruler of the kingdom of the air, the spirit who is now at work in those who are disobedient.

Galatians 1:4-5 KJV
Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:5 To whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Galatians 1:4-5 KJV
Who gave himself for our sins, that he might deliver us from this present evil world, according to the will of God and our Father:
5 To whom be glory for ever and ever. Amen.

Compare: Matthew 12:32; Mark 10:30; Luke 18:30; Luke 20:35; Ephesians 1:21

Luke 18:29-30
“Truly I tell you,” Jesus said to them, “no one who has left home or wife or brothers or sisters or parents or children for the sake of the kingdom of God 30 will fail to receive many times as much in this age, and in the age to come eternal life.”

Aionios, the Greek word mistranslated as "eternal" and "everlasting" in the Bible (eternal hell?)

What I have declared is not my "opinion"--not mine at all.

Seriously. And I will ask you a question: How much time is stated in "I am."

This is true. Aionios does not mean eternal, it does not mean everlasting. It's connected to olam, from Hebrew. Olam does not mean eternal, it does not mean everlasting.

It would not appear that you are among the many who do not get God's method of operation...

Neither does "Lamb" translate as "son" of "God." See the problem? You're looking at things all wrong.

The matter is not one of language, and certainly not one of speculation by the logic of men, but rather is a matter of spiritual discernment. For this same reason and likewise, anyone who thinks that "keep silent in the churches" is in the eternal word of God because of a small group of unruly "women", is sadly mistaken--but is rather a word to the "Bride", that the Spirit should instead speak while we "hear what the Spirit says to the churches." Thus--the "words are spirit."

In my opinion, the torture is enlightenment - and subsequent realization of their own sinfulness and ignorance.
