I listened to a sermon this weekend wherein the pastor said, "God is radically free to His administer His justice, grace, and mercy as He wishes. It is nothing He finds within the person." And this would be in keeping with the Calvinist notion of "total sovereignty," right?

Only thing is, He isn't radically free. He, the Father, has established certain spiritual and natural laws and promises which He holds Himself to. For instance, He has bound Himself to save those who come to Him with a "broken heart and a contrite spirit" asking for salvation (Psa 34:18). If a person does not come to Him with a broken heart over his sin and contrite spirit (desire to be saved), He is under NO OBLIGATION to save that person.

For the NT believer, His promise was laid out at Pentecost in Acts 2:38-39 — "Repent … and receive the Holy Ghost. This promise is to you and to your children…"

Folks, God is not radically free to save His "elect!" …to give them salvation! He has bound Himself to His promises that place responsibilities on MAN. Even in the case of blessings, there is a responsibility for man to OBEY in order to receive the promise!
