For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: - Ephesians 2:8.

Thank God for this verse.

What makes an individual dead to the law? The cross. What is it that took a lost and dieing soul and set it apart of any law works? Why sure, the cross did it. The cross is the cross over from death to life with Christ being the life. So we give up death, or we should say we "reckon yourself dead" to the law and everything else we have ever thought might save me. There is nothing you can do to make grace of God on the cross work for you as part of your salvation except recieve it.

By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. - Romans 5:2.

After your salvation, you now can still go deeper into the grace of God "by faith access this grace we preach" Paul said. What is this grace we access and preach? It is the finished work of God on the cross by Christ death, burial, resurrection, ascension, and return (for lack of a better word) to dwell in every born again believer. Understanding this is what saves a individual, not their doing works or keeping the law of doing.

What is a believer? A believer is one that has been born again, they believe in the cross of God for their salvation and have Christ in them.

Do you know what saves you? Have you ever given much thought to what really saves you. Your salvation is "Christ in you.' You believe in Jesus Christ as your personal savior, and what saves you is 'Christ in you.

What if you believed and God did not save you right then. What if you had to do something else to go with God's salvation to make it work. This is the good news for believers! There was nothing you could do to make it work, it worked regardless of you. Your salvation is complete by Christ in you, you do not have to mix anything with your salvation except life. If you want to work at your salvation then work at having the only life there is "Christ in you the hope of glory."

Since the cross Christian's have struggled to get a handle on their salvation, actually put a finger on it. They know their saved but their still looking at what saves them, there is your answer "Christ in you is your salvation" nothing else can save you. Happy trails!

And what, exactly is the gift of grace? How does it manifest in one's life. It is the power of God.

Acts 2:38
38 Then Peter said to them, “Repent, and let every one of you be baptized in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins; and you shall receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.

2 Peter 1:2-4
2 Grace and peace be multiplied to you in the knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord, 3 as His divine power has given to us all things that pertain to life and godliness, through the knowledge of Him who called us by glory and virtue, 4 by which have been given to us exceedingly great and precious promises, that through these you may be partakers of the divine nature, having escaped the corruption that is in the world through lust.

Romans 8:1-4
There is therefore now no condemnation to those who are in Christ Jesus, who do not walk according to the flesh, but according to the Spirit. 2 For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has made me free from the law of sin and death. 3 For what the law could not do in that it was weak through the flesh, God did by sending His own Son in the likeness of sinful flesh, on account of sin: He condemned sin in the flesh, 4 that the righteous requirement of the law might be fulfilled in us who do not walk according to the flesh but according to the Spirit.

There is no struggle to keep laws against our nature - works. We are dead to the old carnal nature. We are given a new nature that does righteousness in line with our new nature, naturally.

@soul man Great verses! I remember an example about a colourless liquid in an experimental container having a tiny drop of substance added to it, and this alters the colour of the liquid completely; this is like grace plus human merit: the combination means that the person is not truly relying completely on God's grace.

It's interesting to see verse 10, which speaks of believers being His workmanship: good works follow faith indeed; but they do not create saving faith, which is by grace alone.

@Not me Reminds me of what John the Baptist said of the Lord Jesus: "He must increase, but I must decrease" (John 3.30).

Yes, human merit is the carnal nature. We must be born again of the Holy Spirit who makes us dead to sin because of the divine nature of God that we can now partake of and become naturally righteous.

Many make the ignorant mistake that God somehow now tolerates sin. No! He puts Himself inside us, giving us the power of His grace, the divine nature so that we naturally fulfill the righteous requirements of the law. Tell everyone to not stay stupid about the holiness of God. In the end, we will either be his children or sinners. We can't be both.

@CharismaticLady Being dead to sin is a daily reckoning, as Romans 6.11, as we seek by God's grace to follow the Saviour, resting on His finished work at the Cross.

If you have the Holy Spirit you know it because you do not desire to sin anymore. You now do what comes naturally to the Spirit. I didn't receive the Spirit for the first 30 years of going to Church! There are many without the Spirit today, walking around preaching that grace is God turning a blind eye to sin because of Christ. That is a false doctrine of demons that a great percentage of the Church believes. Matthew 7:21-23

Romans 8 shows that all believers are indwelt by the Spirit; clearly also, the same chapter shows that the Christian life includes ongoing mortification of the deeds of the flesh.

All true believers, yes. But those who struggle with sin because they love sin is because of their nature, and have not been born again.

farouk read Matthew 7:21-23 Do they have the Spirit? They call Jesus, Lord and did have the power of the Spirit to cast out demons. So yes, you must mortify the flesh, and not yield to temptation, because these didn't; instead they quenched Him. They didn't abide in Him and endure to the end.

John's First Epistle shows very clearly that true believers can sin, but we have an Advocate with the Father. Sin does not have dominion in the true believer.

I think we have gone over this before.

Yes, we have and you still believe in OSAS. Read Matthew 7:21-23 AGAIN.

1 John 1:8 is not a stand alone scripture. It must be read with 1 John 1:9 to see how to be cleansed of ALL sin, and no longer be a sinner, but a child of God.

Romans 8 and John's First Epistle give much assurance.

Romans 8 and John's First Epistle give much assurance.

Here are the verses about our assurance in 1 John 3:18-24

18 My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. 19 And by this we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him.

21 Beloved, if our heart does not condemn us, we have confidence toward God. 22 And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight. 23 And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment. 24 Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.

Indeed, and the same Epistle shows we have an Advocate, if we - though not now dominated by sin - do sin: 1 John 2.1.

Our Father cannot see our sin....it is covered by the blood of Jesus...but He is aware of our frailty of the flesh and that our flesh wars against our spirit continually.
I believe most Christians can adhere to the 10 Commandments and obey them.
It's the other sins that are harder to root out.
Especially the spirit of pride that causes one to boast about how spiritual they are....or those who refuse instruction or correction because what they know is right and the one trying to teach them is wrong.
Or what about our inward thoughts towards others...are they always pure and with good intent to see blessings on them?
I fail many times in my inward thoughts....and my anger towards certain people because they offended me sometimes gets the better of me....and I confess I can be ruthless and revengeful.
But then afterwards I am so heartbroken...my spirit is grieved because I grieved the Holy Spirit....then I have to repent and ask for forgiveness. And THEN i have to apologize and ask forgiveness to the one I lashed out on.
I had to pray continually for God to heal me of my mouth and my temper. One day He did set me free from the spirit of offense. Now I don't become so easily angered by what others do or say.
Anyway, just my thoughts.

@Heart2Soul I love Philippians 4.8 as a verse to focus on. "Finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report; if there be any virtue, and if there be any praise, think on these things."

Relying on the Lord Jesus' soul cleansing blood, in faith it is a practical joy and benefit to keep 'looking unto Jesus' (Hebrews 12.2).

Indeed, and the same Epistle shows we have an Advocate, if we - though not now dominated by sin - do sin: 1 John 2.1.

1 John 5:16-17 shows there are two types of sin. Jesus is NOT our Advocate for sins unto death. But people like to believe He is, but that is not true.
