Jesus said the greatest commandment was to love the Lord your God with your whole heart, your whole mind, your whole soul and your whole strength. Seems to me that defining what that means in practical terms, and how the commandment is kept in one's daily affairs would be of primary importance.

This is primarily a theoretical question, so I am asking for responses about what you consider proper obedience to this commandment to look like, but if you wish to answer on a more personal level and describe how you best fulfill this commandment on a daily basis in your own personal life, that's good too.

Blessings in Christ to all who respond.

I'm sure there must be people who fufill this commandment to the letter but I'm also sure that there are many, many more of us who don't. To fulfil this commandment you must have to totally devote all areas of your life to God. I love God but is it with all my heart, mind and soul? Probably not, although I hope God is working on that.

Thanks for the honesty, Pearl. I'm going bear my soul on this question eventually myself, cuz I'm not there yet either. But I wanted to hear some replies from others first.

Blessings in Christ Jesus! The Lord is my all in all. In Him alone do I trust. By faith do I allow Him to live out His ministry through me on a daily basis. The Lord is The Faithful Servant, ever working to fullfill His Promises to us. How can one not put Him before all things, how can one not love Him with all that we are. Even what we are(have become), He has made it so. He has asked us to love one another and follow His commandments. How is this not possible with this(His) Love burning inside of us.

It simply means without reservation, as when Abraham trusted God with the life of his only son Isaac; or when Job said, "Though He slay me, yet will I trust Him"; or Christ Jesus, when He said, "nevertheless, not as I will, but as You will.ā€

When the Holy Spirit says "Jump!" you ask "How high?" But learning to hear Him clearly takes time and knowing you Bible.

"And when they ran out of wine, the mother of Jesus said to Him, 'They have no wine.'
Jesus said to her, 'Woman, what does your concern have to do with Me? My hour has not yet come.'
His mother said to the servants, 'Whatever He says to you, do it.'" John 2:3-5 NKJV

"And Peter answered Him and said, 'Lord, if it is You, command me to come to You on the water.'
So He said, 'Come.' And when Peter had come down out of the boat, he walked on the water to go to Jesus." Matthew 14:28-29 NKJV

I do find John's First Epistle to be very searching on the theme of Divine love and then the believer's love in response...

How does one eat food....you put it in your mouth, chew and swallow it. Is a dissertation needed?
How is the greatest commandment kept? I'm sorry, if this is not understood by those claiming Jesus as their Lord then perhaps their lord is not the risen Jesus.

    Yes, agree. For example...
    KJV 1 John 2
To Know God Is to Obey
3 And hereby we do know that we know him, if we keep his commandments.
4 He that saith, I know him, and keepeth not his commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.
5 But whoso keepeth his word, in him verily is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in him.
6 He that saith he abideth in him ought himself also so to walk, even as he walked.
    KJV 1 John 3
18 My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.
19 And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before him.
16 Hereby perceive we the love of God, because he laid down his life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brethren.

I heard it said once that the best way to demonstrate your love for your children is to love their mother. In the following verses i think God could be saying, the best way to demonstrate your love for Me, is to love My children...
    KJV 1 John 4
    God's Love in His People
7 Beloved, let us love one another: for love is of God; and every one that loveth is born of God, and knoweth God.
8 He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.

None of us keep God's commandments fully; that's why we need a Saviour. If we did keep them perfectly, why would we need Christ?
Having said that, if we have been born again, we love God's righteous moral laws and desire to keep them fully (Psalms 119:97 etc., Romans 7:22-23); it upsets us when we fall short.

By selling all and following Christ. Actually forsaking this world and putting God and His kingdom first in all things.

Jesus shows us the way to salvation....loving others as yourself. He tells the rich young ruler (who asked how to be saved) to obey the last 6 commandments (righteousness tablet)

But He curiously leaves out the holiness commandments....not mentioning any of the first 4 commandments (holiness tablet).

When asked what else is there?....Jesus says...if you would be PERFECT...sell all you have and come follow Me. That takes care of the first great commandment to love God with ALL.

Thanks for the response, John. Let me dig a little deeper then. What does putting His kingdom first in all things actually look like in your daily affairs; your daily routine? :) Some think I'm searching for answers that I should already know, but what I'm actually doing is seeing how other members at this forum actually apply the commandment to their lives in practical terms. I take the typical member here to be stronger than the average believer, so it's a way of gauging where the church as a whole is at.

Feel free to comment on that as well, if you like : )
Same question, Brakelite, and thanks for responding. If you can, describe for me in practical terms how that works out in your day to day life. I know it may seem like I'm digging, but quite honestly I rarely hear this commandment preached on very much, let alone get discussed in much detail in practical terms.

I don't think the common believer has any idea what that love entails. People nowadays don't believe ANYTHING they haven't already experienced. And very few will know anything beyond what carnal men experience. Not everyone is meant to be the Bride of Christ. In our time of decadence I would think that as rare as hen's teeth.

But to love God that way one must go (raptured or translated) to be where He is in Zion. One must walk in the Spirit...in the resurrection life of Jesus Christ.

Thanks for the response, Scott, and great to hear from you again. I read your response again, and decided to ask you the same question I asked Brakelite and Episkopos: In practical terms, then, how does that manifest itself in your daily life and affairs?

Please note: To everyone involved in the thread, giving details on one's personal life is not everyone's cup of tea, so I understand for those who don't wish to. But again, I would think of all the things we discuss on this forum, practical obedience to this commandment in particular would be among the most important.

Blessings and thanks for the invite. For me and in my relationship with Christ it is reckoning myself dead to sin and alive unto God... This is a moment by moment reckoning whereby me, myself, I, my will is set aside and now His will (righteousness) is sought after in all things.

Not that Iā€™m complete by any means, but as long as today is more than yesterday and tomorrow more than today. God is at work and will perfect that which concerns me. That I might live up to the standard to which I have obtained.....(always)

Be blessed in Him, Not me
