Being an agnostic, for me, is unpleasant. It's empty and unrewarding. I'm not happy with it. If I liked it I wouldn't be here asking you questions.
I'm here looking for the way out of it. I'm going to read everyone's replies, one each day, and think about them, and see if you've given me the bridge across the gap I don't seem to be able to get across by myself. (Of course I'll continue reading the Bible and praying.) I've tried the accepting Jesus prayer and lots of other things; no results, but maybe there's something here.
If there is a God then that's the most important thing in the world. I don't want to miss Him, and I don't want to disappoint Him.

Sorry for yet another "me" thread but I wanted to be sure everyone who looks down here saw this. You have been kind to me and I want you to understand.
If you still can't understand, maybe it's unavoidable; our minds work differently and our challenges are different. Maybe I'm even one of those people that God doesn't want so that it's impossible for me to believe.

Thank you for your replies on the other threads.

So you are standing on the other side of knowing. I stood there for 37 years. Do you know The Lord designed it that way. Every one has a day that The Lord will come and knock on the door of your life. He also is never far from any of us weather we know Him or not. He even intercedes in our life, even when we do not know Him, out of His love for His creation. Look back on your life, and you will see how you got help that came from no wear, or so it seams. You see, The Lord knows what is in man, as He could perceive it when He was here.It grieved His heart as He walked in the mist of man. He could feel their suffering, their emptiness, that He knew if He finished what He was called to do, this would change for those that believed. And because of His intense love for His creation He did finish what He came to do. And this is celebrated tomorrow in this country and around the world. He had to lay His life down for our sin debt to be paid in full by the Blood He shed upon that cross. If you are reading your Bible this you will see. He told His disciples that He had to go away and that where He was going they could not come yet. He also promised them that after He went away(ascended) That He would send The Mighty Counselor, The Holy Spirit, to abide with them, and to those that believed. And this He has done. When this happens in one's life they now are born from above, and they stand on the side of knowing. How can one not know with The Father and The Son(Jesus) living on the inside of them. The Bible says that, what a man believes in his heart, so he is. You call yourself an agnostic and so you are. Why not just be like a child looking for his Father. The Bible also says that all who seek, find, and all who knock, the door will be open to them. I hope that these words brought to you today help you on your journey. Have a Blessed night and a happy Easter.

Are you really looking for God or are you really waiting for him to show up someday when you are ready, in your appointed time and place to say believe in me, I exist? You may be very disappointed in the rest of this life, and certainly the next one.

You know that many people got off their duff and found God, especially in perilous times. This could happen to you.

Imagine if you will being behind enemy lines lying low, flat out and face buried in the ground. You see a shallow depression, and you quickly make a deeper yet still shallow foxhole in desperation. Desperate to stay hidden, save your skin and live another day, far away from the bullets you hear flying overhead and the pungent colored mist that you still cannot smell although in your view.

Then imagine profusely perspiring, heart racing, scurrying, shaking, hiding low and trying to stay motionless, waiting for time to fly by, as the constant noise of bullets flying and the cries of the weak and the caught out place speared or bayoneted, and even gassed with their lungs seared and bleeding a slow death. It all seems to be getting closer to you. You begin to panic.

You are an atheist, as you (this person anyway) say, and you find yourself suddenly praying to God with your heart in earnest, for your life.

You live another day. You say to yourself I believe in God now. I just cried out to God. I cannot be an atheist anymore, and definitely not an agnostic. I do not doubt, not am I indecisive nor do I deny the existence of God anymore. I have moved in faith to God for the first time in my life, for him to save me.

There were many agnostics and atheists that became believers in God in the trenches during WWI and the foxholes during WWII. Many became Christians.

God moved in their lives because these people were moved way out of their comfort zone into a panic and desperation state. They could see no way out of their predicament. They searched in earnest for God and found him, and he saved them. They did not see him, they felt him inside, in their heart.

Sometimes it takes perilous times to see and bring the light of God into our lives for the first time. It is a life-changing experience many times.

So as they say, there are no deniers in God (atheists) in the trenches or in foxholes, let alone agnostics (the doubters, the fence-sitters who are even worst than atheists. They ponder and wait, and wait selfishly with a heart of lead at times.

You will get of your duff (moved in spirit) in times of crisis, or maybe you have might just have a death wish, without a heart for love and life, and then none for others in the same desperate predicament. They too want to live another day, don't you agree.

    What do you think?

How are you my friend. I just thought I would give a brief of my journey. It sounds like your in a place I once was.

I grew up in a Christian family but decided God wasn't real when I was a teenager. I spent the next 10 years as an atheist, convinced that God didn't exist and living a sinful life.

But my thought process started to change. I couldn't prove or disprove Gods existance so it could be possible He exists. And so I spent another 10 years as an agnostic trying to make sense of things and find God.

Now I'm convinced that God exists. I had to first see Satan in order for me to see God. Evil had driven me to the edge of the cliff, contemplating suicide.
Realising that Satan was real helped for me finding God.
Realising that "science" is corrupt also helped me.
Being on the atheist forum also helped me find God.
Reading the bible was also a huge factor, especially Paul's writings in the new testament.
Learning about other religions helped too as well as other things

But we all take different paths and yours is probably different to mine. But i was agnostic so I can relate to you. The important thing is to keep an open mind to the possibility that a God might exist.

I hope that was some help and I'm happy to answer any questions. God bless

If God didn't want you bugalugs you would have stopped breathing long ago.
As best I've discovered, God cares little for formulas.....he sees right through the charade.....but if thats the best you can muster, he hears.......question is, do we/you......can we discern a whisper from punk rock cacophony?

There is the story of Elijah from 1 Kings 19 replicated partially here;..... are you familiar with it LFG?
The backdrop is, Elijah had just slaughtered 400 priests of Baal.....quiet a bloody mess and now he's suffering PTSD....scared, confused and on the run.....the story picks up from there.....

Now Ahab told Jezebel everything Elijah had done and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. So Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah to say, “May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if by this time tomorrow I do not make your life like that of one of them.”

Elijah was afraid and ran for his life. When he came to Beersheba in Judah, he left his servant there, while he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness. He came to a broom bush, sat down under it and prayed that he might die. “I have had enough, Lord,” he said. “Take my life; I am no better than my ancestors.” Then he lay down under the bush and fell asleep.

All at once an angel touched him and said, “Get up and eat.” He looked around, and there by his head was some bread baked over hot coals, and a jar of water. He ate and drank and then lay down again.

The angel of the Lord came back a second time and touched him and said, “Get up and eat, for the journey is too much for you.” So he got up and ate and drank. Strengthened by that food, he traveled forty days and forty nights until he reached Horeb, the mountain of God.9 There he went into a cave and spent the night.

    The Lord Appears to Elijah
And the word of the Lord came to him: “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

He replied, “I have been very zealous for the Lord God Almighty. The Israelites have rejected your covenant, torn down your altars, and put your prophets to death with the sword. I am the only one left, and now they are trying to kill me too.”

The Lord said, “Go out and stand on the mountain in the presence of the Lord, for the Lord is about to pass by.”

Then a great and powerful wind tore the mountains apart and shattered the rocks before the Lord, but the Lordwas not in the wind. After the wind there was an earthquake, but the Lord was not in the earthquake.12 After the earthquake came a fire, but the Lord was not in the fire. And after the fire came a gentle whisper.13 When Elijah heard it, he pulled his cloak over his faceand went out and stood at the mouth of the cave.

Then a voice said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”

Looking, how about if you start by praying: "God, if you're really there, come into my life. Guide me in all I do. Give me joy, and take away the empty feelings I have. In the name of Jesus, Amen." Keep praying every day, without fail. Even if you have some complaints or frustrations, share those also with the Lord. It may take weeks or months, but sooner or later, I think you will see some answers to your prayers.

Let’s start with where you are. What makes you unsure about the existence of the Supreme Being?

First of all you've got to LIKE Jesus, he'll sense it and his power will begin downloading into you, it's something nonchristians can't understand, it's a POWER thing..:)
Jesus said - "Someone touched me, I know that power has gone out from me." (Luke 8:46)

Jesus said, "Come to me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest." It is not possible that you are one of the people that God doesn't want because he offers himself freely to all.

Are you tired of this world? Does the daily strain and toil of life wear on you? I trust you see that it is a fact that there really is no hope in this world alone. We will all die one day and if there is nothing then eventually no one will remember any of us after several generations. What is the point then if it comes to life just being unbearable each day? What is the point of going on?

Jesus is the only answer. He is the only one who can provide us a life without sin--eventually a life where there is no sin at all but even now in this life some of that sinfulness is taken away. What converted me was reading the Westminster Confessions of Faith. A lot of people on here do not like it. If not that, then I hope you would try to take a look at the part of the Larger Catechism where it talks about the 10 commandments. It is a beautiful depiction of the love we should have for God and for each other. If everyone treated everyone else according to all that is detailed in those questions concerning the Ten Commandments, much of the curse of this world would be gone. We would only have to deal with the curse of natural disasters and even that would be much alleviated since everyone would be caring for his or her neighbor and putting their interests before their own.

A few years ago, I lost the love of my life, my husband, unexpectedly and tragically. If I did not have the faith which the Lord has given me, I would definitely not be here. I would have killed myself. Things like that I just don't know how people go through if they do not believe in the Biblical God and his promise of a better world than this one. This world is just way too difficult for me to get through without Jesus carrying me through it.

Another book I just loved so much since it made me consider the character of our Heavenly Father in a way that I did not before is "A Layman Looks at the Lord's Prayer". I read this a few months ago and it really lifted my spirits up to God; I felt my depression lessen quite a bit.

There's nothing I can say which will make you believe. For me it was reading the Westminster Confessions and it just hit me how much sense the Bible made. I don't think that is very common. After that I went back through the Bible and read it again and it actually was in the book of Matthew where I met my Lord and Saviour Jesus and that is when I was saved. I was just struck by his love and sacrifice and as I study the Bible, especially the Gospels and especially the Gospel of John (Jesus is portrayed so wonderfully in that book), my worship of God grows more and more and I realize just how incredible and beautiful and magnificent and glorious and compassionate and perfect and everything I could ever want is what Jesus is. I hope you will find him. He is the best thing that will ever happen to you because you will be a resident of his eternal kingdom where there will be no more sorrow and pain and sadness. This life will still be tough (and very possibly get tougher after believing upon the Lord; it sure was that way for me), but you will have meaning and purpose in your life in service to the Living God.

May I suggest looking at the christianityexplored website for a church in your area that is or has run this course and contact them.
If there is a course running or due to start, sign up. It is a chance to meet in a neutral setting, christians and other enquires and to discuss aspects of Christianity. As a result of the course you can decide whether to try attending their church, or whether to try another churches course etc.

Alternatively post your questions here to see how they are answered.

Many look for proof and fined none. Not because it isn't there, but because that is no way to see what is purposely kept from those who are not sincere.

You sound sincere. Hang in there--your whole life has been allotted to you for the purpose of coming to know God and the truth. Be patient. Believe.

But don't just believe anything--you are right to be skeptical. But do consider this:

Imagine that you were born into a large room with no windows and only one locked door, and no one having ever been outside the room...there was no one who could actually tell you anything of the truth of what was beyond the large room. Leaders may rise to the top and tell you what serves them, scientist may learn about the contents of the room and even what makes it tick, and teachers may teach what little is known. But no one could actually tell you what was outside and what the truth is--unless the information came in from the outside.

That is what the bible is, it is a record of firsthand personal contact with the outside, covering everything one needs to know. But it is not just stories, it's history (His story)--actual facts from real people down through the ages, of witness testimonies that agree without the possibility of collaboration--except by their Source. And no other faith in history can say that--it just doesn't prove out.

If you can even begin to see the reality of what God has done by the testimonies of so many--the light is already on. Keep seeking, it will all come in time. This is your time.

    LookingForGod,
    WHAT NOT TO DO:

    (1) First. recognize that you can't TRY to believe. Built into the concept of trying is the expectation of inevitable failure. This is also true of misguided efforts to have faith that a healing miracle will be received.
    (2) Recognize that PROOF is the wrong word for a productive spiritual quest. Proof is based on a set of assumptions and assumptions are arbitrary and shaped by personal experience. You have never experienced God; so productive assumptions will elude you.
    (3) If you launch a truly passionate spiritual quest in which you deepen your longing to connect with God, expect to be AMBUSHED by God at a time and in a way that you least expect. Famed Christian writer and Oxford professor, C. S. Lewis, was an avowed atheist. One day he was riding a bus, when this insistent question began to obsess him: he felt like a lobster and was obsessed with the question: are you truly willing to break through your shell?" At first this made no sense to him. A few days later he was taken by car to the Whipsnade Zoo in London. When he was first picked up, he didn't believe Jesus was the Son of God, but shockingly when he arrived at the zoo, he did! Yet, he admits, he wasn't even thinking about God during the ride. He shares the stages of his conversion in his autobiographical book, "Surprised by Joy."
    (4) This is the real practical issue: What might you find psychologically PERSUASIVE, as opposed to logically demonstrated? Discovering what would persuade you depends on your personality and life experience and will require exploration of relevant possibilities.

So let me ask you some potentially helpful questions:
    (1) If you had a self-authenticating powerful experience of God's love, might that change everything for you?
    (2) If a connection between the Gospels and eyewitness testimony could be demonstrated to your satisfaction, would that move the needle on your skeptic meter?
    (3) If you could be convinced that NDEs (near-death experiences) and ADCs (after-death contact) contained compelling paranormal elements, might that make a decisive difference?
    (4) If you knew someone who experienced a healing miracle through prayer to God that couldn't be explained scientifically or psychologically, might that persuade you? Would any other paranormal experience persuade you?

If you wish, I can start a new thread devoted to any or all of (1) -(4) above. I eagerly await your reply.

    NOTHING could convince a non-believer..:)

An atheist falls over a cliff at night and grabs a bush halfway down and begins calling for help.
Suddenly the whole area is bathed in a golden glow and a mighty voice booms out "Let go my son and I will catch you"
"Who are you?" asks the atheist.
"I am the Lord God Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, the Alpha and the Omega".
"HELP, HELP" shouts the atheist, "is there anybody else up there?"

A silly analogy, given that our agnostic would just love to hear a "booming voice" from God! You duck his issue with how he might find God real when he honestly feels like a loving God is no more than a fairy tale--and the unfair suffering in this world seems to decisively confirm that impression in his life exerience. Please show some enpathy with where he is coming from.

Jesus was quite specific that it's satan who causes suffering- "Satan has bound this crippled woman for eighteen years" (Luke 13:10-16)
which brings us to the question 'Who or what is satan?'
We could speculate that he's a mass of bad vibes sloshing around the planet, and that it's atheists and nonchristians who generate the bad vibes that give him power..:)

Right on Angelina, we FIRST believe and THEN we receive. And, yes "blindly" believe and watch Him work in your life brother. For a long time, I was like 'how can I believe what I don't see'. Well, what we don't see is more real than this life on earth. I pray you will find your way. Seems you are on the right track, you have a hunger for Him and He will in no wise ignore that. Pray and relax in Him and WAIT with patience.
God bless, and welcome here bro!

God wasn’t in my thoughts through my first 30 years of my life. I remember asking God if he was real once (silly). I got no response.

Through a terrible depressing time of my life I found God and his Son in the Holy Bible. There he was the whole time. I often wonder how much pain and anguish I could have spared myself had I got a Bible earlier in my life and read it.

Anyway, reading the Bible is how I was converted. So I am surprised reading the Bible hasn’t worked for you.

I pray that you will find salvation in Christ.
