Little children, let no man deceive you: he that doeth righteousness is righteous, even as he is righteous.
This is rebuke to them that think they are righteous sons of God by imputed righteousness only.
By faith that there is one God, any man is imputed the desire for righteousness from God, even as Abel, Enoch, Noah, Abrahm, etc...
But justification of God is only for the righteous doing His righteousness, not only desiring to do so.
Only them doing His righteousness are the righteous, as He is, Them doing unrighteousness are the unrighteous, as the devil is.
And if the unrighteous say they know Him by faith, then they lie, because they do not the righteousness, but only give lip service desire for:
But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God.
Many hear and believe and are imputed righteous desire from God, but only them doing the truth come to His true light of righteousness to fellowship therein.
Only after Abraham offered up Isaac by faith, was he called the Friend of God:
Ye are my friends, if ye do whatsoever I command you.
If we do not righteousness, we are the unrighteous enemies of God, not friends.
