I hope we, each of us are, doing our best, I fear I'm not. The fact is, the Lord Jesus knows in each of our hearts how much we truly try to obey His will, to live in holiness, serving others instead of ourselves. It's a sobering question, "Am I doing my best?" We will each of us stand before Jesus to receive what we've done in the body, whether good or bad.
There are a couple of ways to look at that passage. One concerns what we've done in our own body, the things we've done, good or bad. The other is what we've done in the body of Christ, in the way 1 Corinthians 3 speaks. What we've done concerning others in the body of Christ to either build up or tear down, receiving gold and silver and precious jewels, or ashes.
The gold is found when we desire in our hearts the good of the other person over our own. It's when we love someone that we will sacrifice whatever is needed whether goods or reputation to care for their need that we gain these rewards, the joy in the heavenlies as we share in the glory of all that our works wrought in faith, out of love, has brought into the body of Christ.
Ephesians 4:15-16 KJV
15) But speaking the truth in love, may grow up into him in all things, which is the head, even Christ:
16) From whom the whole body fitly joined together and compacted by that which every joint supplieth, according to the effectual working in the measure of every part, maketh increase of the body unto the edifying of itself in love.
