We are not in the great tribulation yet, but it seems prudent to pray for Israel in this wise.
Matthew 24:19 And woe unto them that are with child, and to them that give suck in those days! 20 But pray ye that your flight be not in the winter, neither on the sabbath day: 21 For then shall be great tribulation, such as was not since the beginning of the world to this time, no, nor ever shall be.
It is a request from Jesus to pray for them ahead of time that it may be avoided.
I doubt the unbelieving Jews will be praying for this, and so it is a request for believers to pray for our future brothers & sisters in Christ for when He returns as the King of kings.
