Many learned people with a reading comprehension problem claim that Abraham worshipped idols before God called him because of Jousha 24:2.

Did this understanding come about because the priests needed a figure head to justify their continual idolatrous worship through the ages?

Jewish's Oral Tradition suggests that Abraham was raised by Noah for many years from the time of Abraham's birth and that Terah had offended Nimrod because of Abraham and fled Ur to escape Nimrod's wrath against him. Shem, Noah's son, also probably held to Noah's beliefs and had an influence over Abraham's life as well.

Noah died when Abraham was around 59 years of age, nine years after Abraham had left Ur, and it was Noah's death that Stephen referenced in Acts 7 when he said that after his father's death, i.e. Noah, Abraham left Haran to go down towards Canaan. From studying the chronology of Abraham's family line, Terah died one year before Sarah died around 50-60 years after Abraham had left Haran to go south down to the Land of Canaan.

Now if Noah and Shem both walked with God after the Flood and Abraham had accompanied them on some of these occasions, then he had had a number of encounters with God while he was still living near Ur before he left on his journey down to the Land of Canaan.

Now the book of Genesis is silent on whether or not Abrahm worshipped idols or God before God called him.

It is my opinion that Abraham had formed a working relationship with God before God called him to walk with Him in the Land of Canaan.

It is mere speculation as to whether or no Abraham actually did worship Idols before he was called and it all depends on the spin that theologians want to express in their telling of God's redemption plan for mankind.

Shalom
