White turnip, I like. Obviously, my mother never heard of them. I learned that people who grew up on dirt farms in rural New Brunswick during the Great Depression ate all kinds of things...even rutabagas. So did their kids. :(

As an aside, there's a reason why giant + turnip go together for me. Not long ago I decided to try my hand at growing turnips in the greenhouse. I was not expecting the result...

Oy, one of those turnips was larger than a basketball!

Back to our regularly scheduled programming. ;)

There several things my mother fixed routinely that turned my stomach and she was normally a great cook. I ate what she fixed but with some things it was a struggle. I never struggled with home made cream puffs or doughnuts or hot fruit pies. But leave out the rutabagas and the liver...

You didn't eat it did you? My dad actually liked them...could be what made him a socialist.

My dad liked liver, too. He might have got his taste disfunction from the Nazis...I know they leave a bad taste in my mouth.

No, but there's some history behind turnips that's worth knowing. Turnips are a root vegetable and pretty nutritious; they can be grown in poor soil and do well with a modicum of care. They're a famine crop as a result.

You gotta be starving to eat them.
