It is because of the death of Christ that His Spirit within us frees us from sin and death. We are born again of a nature that partakes of the divine nature of Christ. It is how we are free from willful sin, therefore, actually dead to sin. Not just figuratively. His Spirit keeps us away from the old man we used to be by super-sensitizing our new conscience to want to do what is right. That is adding virtue to our faith. At that point we are living up to the knowledge that we have. Phil. 3:16
Then comes study to show yourself approved. So we add knowledge to our virtue.
With knowledge our conscience is aware of more, and self-control is added.
Then as we mature in the faith our self-control adds perseverance to the point it is deemed godliness.
And as we see on these forums, those who are mature show brotherly kindness. But others of us have not yet gained even self-control, forever learning, but have not yet come to a knowledge of the truth.
And the last that is perfected is love...
Those who have all of these will neither stumble nor fall. And the old man has been long dead and mummified.
