An inspired idea in the mind of a mechanic in Brazil led to a simple invention that is now bringing the light of a 60 watt bulb into dark homes and huts of the impoverished, who otherwise could not afford the luxury of electricity. …and it's free, with a plastic water bottle and the sun.

Its a poor mans version of a skylight I suppose. ... About 20 years ago skylights were the rage .... many were small (12") openings in the roof with magnifiers and reflectors to diffuse the light ... the Brazilian guy uses water to accomplish the same effect.

Some are even made to go around corners etc .... see link below

The biggest drawback is trying to keep them sealed .... those popular skylights become leaking-roof nightmares after a few years.
