Luke 9:52-56 And sent messengers before his face: and they went, and entered into a village of the Samaritans, to make ready for him. [53] And they did not receive him, because his face was as though he would go to Jerusalem. [54] And when his disciples James and John saw this, they said, Lord, wilt thou that we command fire to come down from heaven, and consume them, even as Elias did? [55] But he turned, and rebuked them, and said, Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of. [56] For the Son of man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them. And they went to another village.

What did Christ mean when He said: “Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.”

52 One day he sent messengers ahead to reserve rooms for them in a Samaritan village. 53 But they were turned away! The people of the village refused to have anything to do with them because they were headed for Jerusalem. (A typical case of discrimination (compare John 4:9). The Jews called the Samaritans “half-breeds,” so the Samaritans naturally hated the Jews.)

54 When word came back of what had happened, James and John said to Jesus, “Master, shall we order fire down from heaven to burn them up?” 55 But Jesus turned and rebuked them, (Later manuscripts add to vv. 55-56, “And Jesus said, ‘You don’t realize what your hearts are like. For the Son of Man has not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.’”) 56 and they went on to another village.

In saving us, Jesus is saving us from our sin and unrighteousness. The disciples did not act out of forgiveness and love, which would not be good spirit.

Did not know that about verses 55 and 56. Noticed also the “even as Elias did” is also omitted in verse 54. Never have read the Living translation before.

Luke 9:54 Lexicon: When His disciples James and John saw this, they said, "Lord, do You want us to command fire to come down from heaven and consume them?"

Not sure what to make of it. It is late here. will sleep on it and see if it is any clearer in the morning. Thank you. One thing that does stand out though is earlier in Luke 9:44-45 Let these sayings sink down into your ears: for the Son of man shall be delivered into the hands of men. [45] But they understood not this saying, and it was hid from them, that they perceived it not: and they feared to ask him of that saying.

Then they go into reasoning of who among them is the greatest... where Christ instructs them on whosoever will receive a child...then they are wanting to forbid one casting out devils in His name because they are not one of them, on to asking if they should call down fire from heaven...regardless of whether or not verse 55 and 56 are in the original text it doesn’t appear unlikely or out of place for “He turned and rebuked them and said, “you do not know what kind of spirit you are of;” or as you posted ’You don’t realize what your hearts are like.’ Considering:

2 Timothy 1:7-8 For God hath not given us the spirit of fear; but of power, and of love, and of a sound mind. [8] Be not thou therefore ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me his prisoner: but be thou partaker of the afflictions of the gospel according to the power of God;

Romans 8:15 For ye have not received the spirit of bondage again to fear; but ye have received the Spirit of adoption, whereby we cry, Abba, Father.

What did Christ mean when He said: “Ye know not what manner of spirit ye are of.”

He explained it in the very next verse:"For the Son of Man is not come to destroy men's lives, but to save them".

In the first coming of Christ, He came with grace and mercy as the Savior of the world. However, in His second coming, He will come with power and great glory (as well as great wrath) as the Judge of the wicked, the unbelieving and the ungodly. There will be universal (and fearful) mourning at His Second Coming.

Yes. Thank you. “...not come to destroy men’s lives, but to save them.” From the bondage of the fear of death. From the spirit of fear unto bondage...Hebrews 2:13-15 And again, I will put my trust in him. And again, Behold I and the children which God hath given me. [14] Forasmuch then as the children are partakers of flesh and blood, he also himself likewise took part of the same; that through death he might destroy him that had the power of death, that is, the devil; [15] And deliver them who through fear of death were all their lifetime subject to bondage.

Clear now what spirit they were of. In still under this bondage and spirit of fear...having not yet been delivered from the power of death. Matthew 26:33-35 Peter answered and said unto him, Though all men shall be offended because of thee, yet will I never be offended. [34] Jesus said unto him, Verily I say unto thee, That this night, before the cock crow, thou shalt deny me thrice. [35] Peter said unto him, Though I should die with thee, yet will I not deny thee. Likewise also said all the disciples.
