Miracles, signs and wonders were actually very rare over the past 6000 years of biblical history. God used those signs when He was giving new revelation to authenticate the messenger was speaking on behalf of YHWH. We see the major times below:

1- When God used Moses during the time of the Law and when God was using Moses to free His people from Pharaoh

2- During the time of the Prophets when God used those signs Elijah and Elisha

3- When Jesus came on the scene His Miracles were proof He came from God and authenticated His message was from the Father. He told the Pharisees if you do not believe Me then believe the Miracles. John 3:2 John 5:36 John 10:38

4- The Apostles who were revealing the gospel to the nations/peoples both Jews and Gentiles. Acts 4:10-16

2 Corinthians 12:12
The signs of a true apostle were performed among you with all perseverance, by signs and wonders and miracles.

Jesus said an evil generation seeks miracles. Matthew 12:39 Matthew 16:4

So we can see that the Miracles authenticated that the message came from God.

God is no longer giving new revelation and Paul says the coming evil one will deceive everyone with his false signs and miracles. 2 Thessalonians 2:9

Jesus said in Matthew 24:24 the same thing about false miracles, signs and wonders before His 2nd Coming,

hope this helps !!!

Greetings, Christophany!

No, actually this doesn't help, LoL, but at least it's not another thread on Catholicism.

Ok, let's break this down here. The actual wording is, they sought a sign (σημεῖον) from Jesus, not a miracle. The text reads as follows:

38 Then some of the scribes and Pharisees answered, saying, “Teacher, we want to see a sign from You.” 39 But He answered and said to them, “An evil and adulterous generation seeks after a sign, and no sign will be given to it except the sign of the prophet Jonah. 40 For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of the great fish, so will the Son of Man be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth. 41 The men of Nineveh will rise up in the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at the preaching of Jonah; and indeed a greater than Jonah is here. (Matthew 12:39-41).

Now let me ask you something so I can test your Bible knowledge: What sign specifically were they wanting to see from Him? There is an answer.

God bless, and thanks for posting the thread.

one from heaven maybe such as with Elijah, but thats speculation. Maybe those like Moses with the manna and water from heaven ? who knows thunder and lightening like on Sinai

And the saddest part of all the missed the greatest miracle of all God walking among them as a man in their very midst - someone greater than Moses and Solomon was with them.

I have gifts from the Holy Spirit, just not the tongues and babbling type. the ones that edify the body, not self.

Plus God grants the gifts/distributes the them as He pleases, man doesn't request spiritual gifts.

Correct. One from Heaven. He was talking about signs that would precede the Day of the Lord, when the sun would be darkened and the moon would not give its light. They wanted to see a sign that would prove Jesus' claim to being the "Son of man," i.e. the Messiah. And since He was not coming in power yet, He told them that they would be given no sign. They were an evil generation in not knowing the time of their visitation, thinking they would recognize their Messiah when they did not. The only sign He said they would receive regarding, i.e a sign that would verify His Messiahship, would be that He would be three days and three nights in the grave, hence His reference to the sign of Jonah.

Now, this means that quoting that verse as relating to people in our time wanting to see miracles take place in the lives of others is taking it out of context. Our God wants to see miracles take place in our lives, and He wants to see the spiritual gifts in full operation among us. But we must believe in such things for starters, and many do not. Those who do must consecrate themselves unto Him in prayer if they will see them. Those who do not have no hope of seeing miracles, especially if they are told that to wish to see God do miracles on behalf of oneself or others is the mark of an evil person.

If man doesn't request spiritual gifts, then why did Paul say in speaking about the gifts of healing, the use of tongues and the gift of interpretation of tongues, to "desire the greater gifts"? Why did he also say, "Desire spiritual gifts, but rather that you may prophesy"?

Which ones do you have?

Which ones do you have ?

There are actually three biblical lists of the “gifts of the Spirit,” also known as spiritual gifts. The three main passages describing the spiritual gifts are Romans 12:6–8; 1 Corinthians 12:4–11; and 1 Corinthians 12:28. We could also include Ephesians 4:11, but that is a list of offices within the church, not spiritual gifts, per se. The spiritual gifts identified in Romans 12 are prophesying, serving, teaching, encouraging, giving, leadership, and mercy. The list in 1 Corinthians 12:4–11 includes the word of wisdom, the word of knowledge, faith, healing, miraculous powers, prophecy, distinguishing between spirits, speaking in tongues and interpretation of tongues. The list in 1 Corinthians 12:28 includes healings, helps, governments, diversities of tongues. A brief description of each gift follows:

Prophecy – The Greek word translated “prophecy” in both passages properly means “a speaking forth.” According to Thayer’s Greek Lexicon, the word refers to “discourse emanating from divine inspiration and declaring the purposes of God, whether by reproving and admonishing the wicked, or comforting the afflicted, or revealing things hidden; especially by foretelling future events.” To prophesy is to declare the divine will, to interpret the purposes of God, or to make known in any way the truth of God that is designed to influence people.

Serving – Also referred to as “ministering,” the Greek word diakonian, from which we get the English “deacon,” means service of any kind, the broad application of practical help to those in need.

Teaching – This gift involves the analysis and proclamation of the Word of God, explaining the meaning, context and application to the hearer’s life. The gifted teacher is one who has the unique ability to clearly instruct and communicate knowledge, specifically the doctrines of the faith.

Encouraging – Also called “exhortation,” this gift is evident in those who consistently call upon others to heed and follow God’s truth, which may involve correction or building others up by strengthening weak faith or comforting in trials.

Giving – Gifted givers are those who joyfully share what they have with others, whether it is financial, material, or the giving of personal time and attention. The giver is concerned for the needs of others and seeks opportunities to share goods, money, and time with them as needs arise.

Leadership – The gifted leader is one who rules, presides over, or has the management of other people in the church. The word literally means “guide” and carries with it the idea of one who steers a ship. One with the gift of leadership rules with wisdom and grace and exhibits the fruit of the Spirit in his life as he leads by example.

Mercy – Closely linked with the gift of encouragement, the gift of mercy is obvious in those who are compassionate toward others who are in distress, showing sympathy and sensitivity coupled with a desire and the resources to lessen their suffering in a kind and cheerful manner.

Word of wisdom – The fact that this gift is described as the “word” of wisdom indicates that it is one of the speaking gifts. This gift describes someone who can understand and speak forth biblical truth in such a way as to skillfully apply it to life situations with all discernment.

Word of knowledge – This is another speaking gift that involves understanding truth with an insight that only comes by revelation from God. Those with the gift of knowledge understand the deep things of God and the mysteries of His Word.

Faith – All believers possess faith in some measure because it is one of the gifts of the Spirit bestowed on all who come to Christ in faith (Galatians 5:22-23). The spiritual gift of faith is exhibited by one with a strong and unshakeable confidence in God, His Word, His promises, and the power of prayer to effect miracles.

Healing – Although God does still heal today, the ability of men to produce miraculous healings belonged to the apostles of the first century church to affirm that their message was from God. Christians today do not have the power to heal the sick or resurrect the dead. If they did, the hospitals and morgues would be full of these “gifted” people emptying beds and coffins everywhere.

Miraculous powers – Also known as the working of miracles, this is another temporary sign gift which involved performing supernatural events that could only be attributed to the power of God (Acts 2:22). This gift was exhibited by Paul (Acts 19:11-12), Peter (Acts 3:6), Stephen (Acts 6:8), and Phillip (Acts 8:6-7), among others.

Distinguishing (discerning) of spirits – Certain individuals possess the unique ability to determine the true message of God from that of the deceiver, Satan, whose methods include purveying deceptive and erroneous doctrine. Jesus said many would come in His name and would deceive many (Matthew 24:4-5), but the gift of discerning spirits is given to the Church to protect it from such as these.

Speaking in tongues – The gift of tongues is one of the temporary “sign gifts” given to the early Church to enable the gospel to be preached throughout the world to all nations and in all known languages. It involved the divine ability to speak in languages previously unknown to the speaker. This gift authenticated the message of the gospel and those who preached it as coming from God. The phrase “diversity of tongues” (KJV) or “different kinds of tongues” (NIV) effectively eliminates the idea of a “personal prayer language” as a spiritual gift.

Interpretation of tongues – A person with the gift of interpreting tongues could understand what a tongues-speaker was saying even though he did not know the language that was being spoken. The tongues interpreter would then communicate the message of the tongues speaker to everyone else, so all could understand.

Helps – Closely related to the gift of mercy is the gift of helps. Those with the gift of helps are those who can aid or render assistance to others in the church with compassion and grace. This has a broad range of possibilities for application. Most importantly, this is the unique ability to identify those who are struggling with doubt, fears, and other spiritual battles; to move toward those in spiritual need with a kind word, an understanding and compassionate demeanor; and to speak scriptural truth that is both convicting and loving. Is there a biblical spiritual gifts list? | GotQuestions.org

hope this helps !!!

and why would that matter to you ?

you would deny them just as I deny yours right ?

Actually I doubt she would, but she would likely question it if you automatically assumed hers were invalid.

So what do you think of my Post #7? Do you still think men should not request spiritual gifts from God?

Hope you are having a blessed evening, btw.

Miracles, signs and wonders were actually very rare over the past 6000 years of biblical history.
We already have some threads on this subject. And there are two groups of Christians: (1) those looking for sign gifts today and (2) those who believe that they were for the apostolic age.

The history of the Church shows that sign gifts passed with the passing of the apostles. But there are many other spiritual gifts that are necessary today, and they are still in force. Paul says that greatest gift is AGAPE love (charity), and without that gift the sign gifts are no little value.

I asked which ones you have and you named them all, including the offices that Jesus gives His Church. You must be pretty busy. Just one thing. You didn't mention the list of gifts to the individual believer for personal use in Mark 16:16-18

Right. There is one group of unbelievers that do not know anything about Covenant Theology. Nothing changes within a covenant until the covenant, itself, ends. Which the Old Covenant was replaced by the New Covenant and came to an end, thus ending sacrifice and all the laws, and holy days, being replaced by stronger commandments based on Love through the rebirth.

man doesn't request spiritual gifts.

Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.

Therefore let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret.

Therefore, brethren, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues.
