Deuteronomy 6:

25 if we are careful to obey all this law before the LORD our God, as he has commanded us, that will be our righteousness.

Deuteronomy 6:
Yes, righteousness was really righteousness even though it was under the Law. It was a righteousness intended to lead to eternal righteousness, which was certified as true after Jesus rose from the dead and assured all those who believe in him that their choice to follow him would be recognized as everlasting.

One thing remained for those who chose to have faith in God and in His righteousness before the cross, and that was for Christ to atone for the sins of the world. Then those who truly chose righteousness as their way, truth, and life would find that they had chosen him who is the way, truth, and life. May God have mercy on all those who "knew not what they were doing" and had not had opportunity to fully recognize what "righteousness" was!
