Okay, so someone pointed out to me that a poll asking about tattoo impressions on another thread has expired. (I floated a question subsequently about whether another poll would consequently be warranted. I will make sure that the new poll lasts a while, so that ppl won't be getting back to me again soon telling me that it has expired.)

The question is: What is the best age for a first tattoo?

I saw this quote a while ago from the Bible Belt, which seems to indicate that under 40 — especially under 30 — is a widely preferred age.

    (Emphasis added.)

So I will include a number of options which should accommodate both those who are strongly appreciative of tattoos, and those who are equivocal and those who are strongly hostile to them.

I think the reason for having a tattoo might have more to do with it than age. But I'm still thinking about it.

Yes, I take your point. Very much.

I guess it could also have been phrased, to avoid possible regrets later, Until what age should tattoo caution be absolute?

Some ppl regard it as a rite of passage to adulthood; others see it strictly as something one should have wanted for many years and only then do it.

Yes, I see what you mean; your earlier comment sort of obliquely dealt with the poll responses in the sense that your thoughts for the poll are tied up with your own possible plans.

I guess in terms of warning (?) others, the thought strikes me, At what age does a warning to avoid it become inappropriate?

I think when I was a young Christian, a scripture or Christian art Tattoo would have helped me stake a claim as a Christian and made people aware early on. It would have helped sort out friends from the start. So I regret not having that as an option during that time. Most back then were tacky "prison tattoos" self made and clumsy.

Thanks; I kind of sense, then, that 'Between 18 and 25' makes a lot of sense to you, right?

(Assuming that you were converted between those ages, more or less?)

If I found myself in a similar situation to when I was young, I'd probably have a tattoo. Right now I don't mingle too much if at all.

I see what you mean, yes.

I can follow what you are saying.

There seem to be a number of schools of thought - some of them overlapping, of course.

For some ppl it's all about becoming a man, becoming a woman. (Hence, do it at around 18.) For some Christians, although the compulsion to do it because it's a reaching adulthood thing, is not necessarily the primary reason, but because it's so widespread among their peers, then pragmatically it's an opportune time for a faith based inking which will very likely lead to many testimony conversations among their peers, especially.

For others driven by caution, but who have no basic objection to doing it, waiting years makes a lot of sense. Particularly for those who have little or no thought of using it as a witness tool.

    (If you follow?)

PS: I expect that people encouraged you to nail one's colours to the mast, so to speak, as soon as possible: general advice to a young Christian. This is what I was told.

But you're right; faith based tattoos were not in vogue in those days, were they?

Thanks for your good question; it should be at the top of this page...

(Do let a mod know, if it doesn't seem to be on your screen...)

It's an interesting and maybe significant question to ask in a poll, isn't it? (I thought so, anyway.)
