How a post appears in different browsers makes a huge difference on readability.

On mine, it is hard to tell the difference between what is quoted and the response.

That is why I bold and italicze my responses.

I also use Xenforo on my forum. But I used the default style.

The editor has a quote function and I use nested quotes. Those make conversation so much clearer, but each admin has to make the choices of what they wish to use.

So my big point here is please make sure when people read what you post they know what you're saying and what others are saying clearly. Then there is no problem with all the words just running together.

All you have to do is highlight what you wish to quote and click on *Reply* as I just did here.

Nope. An HP desktop running Cyberfox on Windows 10.
I hope you understand software has to be programmed to run on individual browsers. Each browser reads such as Xexforo software and interprets it for display.

As default Xenforo runs differently than the style used on this website.

No, CoreIssue is right. On my computer, I often have difficulty telling where the OP ends, and when the text is that of the responder. That is why I make my replies larger than the OP.

Since the quote is in italics, and my response is not, how can it look the same? All quotes show up as italics, if you highlight and click *Reply*.

For me, @Enoch111 's posts are just like everyone else. I too do what he does, I just highlight the <snip> which I want to quote and reply.
    I'm on Chrome... Mac laptop.

Clarity is far more important and it seems only to be you complaining.

I find it annoying having to figure out if I'm reading a quote or reply.

Fact is there are some sites for how I am posting is their standard text style.

But what happens when everyone uses bold, large sized fonts?? How about just kicking in a few blank lines at the top of a response before replying?

    "Enter, enter, enter". Bingo.

Or possibly some simple demarcating character?

Once you've fired the large bold italicized font 'shot' then color is about the only indicator left to emphasize particular words. Which as a user of color, that too, can get annoying.

I do agree that the default quote of slightly smaller text and italicizing often leaves something to be desired.

Most of us are older and the eyeballs do whither with age. I too use a (cheap) laptop, but then patch that through a larger TV/monitor. A cheap 32" flat panel with limited resolution of 1366x768. The same as my laptop's maximum, and native, resolution. About $125.

Arguably the OP could also be considered complaining. (Sorry if my wife/white humor was offensive CI) Not trying to ruffle any feathers. But consider this...

This, too, can seem all jammed together and similar.

Did you miss the first part of my reply just (a few lines) above? While we are griping, and nothing personal to anyone, but huge 'sigs' can also help mask a short little reply using default settings.

I think this is a worthy subject to explore. But content will always reign supremely as King of Annoyance™! :D I am as guilty of that as anybody.

Part of content knowing who said what. When it all runs together that is lost.

There is always a way to differentiate text. I've done this for over 12 years.

That is why on my forum I use nested quotes and the postbox has a quote function. So there's no reason to ever touch the default text.

    ------------------------------------------------------------------
Exactly. I'd say knowing who said what is 100% of the content.

Sure. Some methods are simply better than others. I've done this
for 25 years. 28+ years, if you let me count my days using a
    Commodore Amiga and BBSes.

At one time I use that method too. But it is far more time-consuming.

My favorite remains as set up on my forum.... Quote function in the postbox and auto nested quotes. Simple, consistent and clear.

Even this way is simpler. Highlight and hit B and I

I have my settings done so that I have never seen the first SIG on here. You don't have to ever see them if you don't want to.

This is where I am as well. When people refer to them I vaguely remember that I once saw them, but now I guess I am blind in that respect.
