The Apostle Paul observed (Romans 2:14,15) that the gentiles behaved as if “the law” was written on their hearts. Since these gentiles were pagans, he meant that their culture was based on Love Thy Neighbor—sharing & caring, being gentle & kind, and promoting life-long, monogamous marriages. (See also, Acts 28: 1 - 7)
Many Native American cultures were/are similar, such as Cherokee culture (see e.g., Exploring Cherokee Traditions And Beliefs: A Comprehensive Guide - Native Tribe Info).
Just as our church services (should) reinforce God’s expectations for us, Native American rituals reinforced their cultural expectations, passed down from elders (who must have listened to God, or “The Great Spirit” has he is called).
Today, they face the same kind of challenges Christians do: temptations to become self-centered and covetous.
