Salvation is for the elect ! 1 tim 2:10Therefore I endure all things for the elect's sakes, that they may also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.Salvation which is in Christ Jesus has wrought and provided for the elect..There is no other name given under heaven than christ Jesus , whereby men must or can be saved and this salvation is for the elect of God.This was the passion of the apostle to proclaim that gospel and endure all the trials and difficulties that he must, in order for the elect to obtain their salvation, that is come into the knowledge and enjoyment of it. To hear its glad tidings.Who are the elect ?The elect are the #1 The election of gracerom 11:5Even so then at this present time also there is a remnant according to the election of grace.Paul here in the 11th chapter of romans was clearing up a misunderstanding to his readers. Though it had appeared God had forsaken Israel , the jews, Gods earthly, national covenant people because of their blindness towards jesus christ, and their unbelief, Paul was saying , be advised , all is not lost with the national covenant people , because there is a remnant according to the election of grace..that is those God has reserved for Himself to obtain salvation by grace and eternal glory..A remnant is a selection of some from amongst many that God preserves :rom 11:But what saith the answer of God unto him? I have reserved to myself seven thousand men, who have not bowed the knee to the image of Baal.Just as God had a election of grace within the jewish nation , so also there is a election of grace in the gentile people..James speaks about this people :acts 15:13And after they had held their peace, James answered, saying, Men and brethren, hearken unto me: 14Simeon hath declared how God at the first did visit the Gentiles, to take out of them a people for his name. 15And to this agree the words of the prophets; as it is written, 16After this I will return, and will build again the tabernacle of David, which is fallen down; and I will build again the ruins thereof, and I will set it up: 17That the residue of men might seek after the Lord, and all the Gentiles, upon whom my name is called, saith the Lord, who doeth all these things. 18Known unto God are all his works from the beginning of the world. Notice the last verse 18..this taking out of them[ the gentiles] for His name is a work of God..He should be credited for it..This was a work He determined to accomplish from the beginning of the world..to take out of = to take what is one's own, to take to one's self, to make one's ownIn other words God took out of the gentile world those that where His own by election..#2 The elect are those God the father gave to the son.Jn 17:1These words spake Jesus, and lifted up his eyes to heaven, and said, Father, the hour is come; glorify thy Son, that thy Son also may glorify thee: 2As thou hast given him power over all flesh, that he should give eternal life to as many as thou hast given him. 3And this is life eternal, that they might know thee the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom thou hast sent. These are given to The Son in order to be given eternal life..These that were given to the son were prior to being given belonged to the Father notice vs 6I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me; and they have kept thy word. Here we see that christ makes a profound statement, thine they were [ past tense] and thou gavest them me.What does christ mean , thine they were ?John Gills comment is helpful :thine they were, and thou gavest them me;the persons given were not the Father's merely by creation; for so others are his also; nor would they be peculiarly his, for they are the son's likewise in this sense; but they are his by electing grace, which is the peculiar act of the Father in Christ, and is unto salvation by him, through the sanctification of the Spirit; these are chosen to be his peculiar people, and given to Christ as such: Also Matthew henry comments :[1.] That the Father had authority to give them: Thine they were. He did not give that which was none of his own, but covenanted that he had a good title. The elect, whom the Father gave to Christ, were his own in three ways:--First, they were creatures, and their lives and beings were derived from him. When they were given to Christ to be vessels of honour, they were in his hand, as clay in the hand of the potter, to be disposed of as God's wisdom saw most for God's glory. Secondly, They were criminals, and their lives and beings were forfeited to him. It was a remnant of fallen mankind that was given to Christ to be redeemed, that might have been made sacrifices to justice when they were pitched upon to be the monuments of mercy; might justly have been delivered to the tormentors when they were delivered to the Saviour. Thirdly, They were chosen, and their lives and beings were designed, for him; they were set apart for God, and were consigned to Christ as his agent. This he insists upon again (John 17:7): All things whatsoever thou hast given me are of thee, which, though it may take in all that appertained to his office as Mediator, yet seems especially to be meant of those that were given him. "They are of thee, their being is of thee as the God of nature, their well-being is of thee as the God of grace; they are all of thee, and therefore, Father, I bring them all to thee, that they may be all for thee."[2.] That he did accordingly give them to the Son. Thou gavest them to me, as sheep to the shepherd, to be kept; as patients to the physician, to be cured; children to a tutor, to be educated; thus he will deliver up his charge (Hebrews 2:13), The children thou hast given me. They were delivered to Christ, First, That the election of grace might not be frustrated, that not one, no not of the little ones, might perish. That great concern must be lodged in some one good hand, able to give sufficient security, that the purpose of God according to election might stand. Secondly, That the undertaking of Christ might not be fruitless; they were given to him as his seed, in whom he should see of the travail of his soul and be satisfied (Isaiah 53:10,11), and might not spend his strength, and shed his blood, for nought, and in vain, Isaiah 49:4. We may plead, as Christ does, "Lord, keep my graces, keep my comforts, for thine they were, and thou gavest them to me."So we see the apostle paul as well as all God sent messengers have this common passion , the preaching of the gospel in order that the elect may obtain their salvation that comes from Jesus Christ..This salvation was wrought by christ for the elect..#1. The election of grace and #2. Those given to the son by the Father..May this Gospel be preached to all the world , then the end shall come
