The timing given in Revelation is the 7 Trumpets. With each of the last 3 Trumpets, a Woe is given with each one.

Rev 8:13
13 And I beheld, and heard an angel flying through the midst of heaven, saying with a loud voice, Woe, woe, woe, to the inhabiters of the earth by reason of the other voices of the trumpet of the three angels, which are yet to sound!

KJV

That is a very strong... warning to beware. Must mean these last three Trumpet events are especially important to note. The 1st Trumpet - 1st Woe begins in Revelation 9...

Rev 9:1-12
9 And the fifth angel sounded, and I saw a star fall from heaven to the earth: and to him was given the key of the bottomless pit.

That's the 5th Trumpet sounding, and is accompanied with the 1st Woe. What star of old first fell from Heaven to the earth? That was Satan of course, when he first rebelled against God in coveting His throne (per parable in Ezekiel 28; also see Luke 10:18 where Lord Jesus said He saw Satan as lightning fall from heaven. Also see Revelation 12:3-4 when Satan fell, and also drew a third of the stars (angels) to earth at his rebellion.

2 And he opened the bottomless pit; and there arose a smoke out of the pit, as the smoke of a great furnace; and the sun and the air were darkened by reason of the smoke of the pit.

In Joel 2, we are shown that the "day of the Lord" (Christ's coming) will be a day gloominess, a day of clouds and thick darkness, and it involves the working of the symbolic locusts God mentions in Joel. This here then represents those Joel 1 and Joel 2 events coming upon the earth and God's people in the end of days.

3 And there came out of the smoke locusts upon the earth: and to them was given power, as the scorpions of the earth have power.

These locusts represent Satan's servants that rise up in the end days, just prior to Christ's future return. Further down in Revelation 9:18-19, we are told their power is in their 'mouths'. What comes out of one's mouth? Words. And in the case of these servants of the devil, it is about lies that cause deception. Warning against deception was the very first Sign of the end Lord Jesus gave His Church in His Olivet discourse (Matthew 24; Mark 13).

These locusts have the power 'like'... how real scorpions on the earth work. It means they spiritually work deception like how a real scorpion attacks its prey. A real scorpion stings its prey, numbing it. Then the scorpion throws up an acid like mixture into the victim's mouth, and the victim's insides turn to much. The scorpion then sucks up that mixture, because a scorpion has no digestive system to break down his victim. What is left is the victim's outer dead empty shell. God is using that scorpion analogy to spiritually represent how these symbolic locusts destroy their victims, spiritually. Deception was Christ's main warning for the end, remember?

4 And it was commanded them that they should not hurt the grass of the earth, neither any green thing, neither any tree; but only those men who have not the seal of God in their foreheads.
5 And to them it was given that they should not kill them, but that they should be tormented five months: and their torment was as the torment of a scorpion, when he striketh a man.

These symbolic locusts cannot hurt any green thing. That immediately leaves out these being anything to do with military weapons or military armies. They are allowed to hurt ONLY... those men not sealed with God's seal in the forehead. What's in your forehead? Your brain! Those in Christ, how are we sealed in Christ? By The Holy Spirit (2 Corinthians 1:19-22).

This "five months" is a specific time the locusts are allowed to deceive those not sealed by God.

6 And in those days shall men seek death, and shall not find it; and shall desire to die, and death shall flee from them.

That is pointing to the very end of this world, when all wars have stopped.

7 And the shapes of the locusts were like to horses prepared for battle; and on their heads were as it were crowns like gold, and their faces were as the faces of men.

These locusts appear like horses for battle, suggesting they operate 'like' an army. And on their heads are crowns 'like'... gold. That means they aren't real gold. What is it that Jesus promised His faithful that wait on Him at His coming? Crowns. Think these locusts might... be trying to simulate His servants? Yes, as in 2 Corinthians 11 Apostle Paul warned us about the "another Jesus" and his ministers who disguise themselves as the ministers of righteousness. These locusts have the "faces of men"? Yeah, which points to them actually being men, false apostles, the fake ministers of righteousness.

8 And they had hair as the hair of women, and their teeth were as the teeth of lions.

These fakes symbolically have the "hair of women"? Yeah, because women's hair simulates beauty and smoothness. That's how they attack and deceive, regurgitating their acid of deceptive lies into their victims, and turning the souls of their victims to mush!

That teeth as lions is a symbol also used for the locusts in the Book of Joel. Thus God wants us to understand how a real lion attacks with its teeth, and compare that spiritually to how these symbolic locusts attack. A lion once it bites down on its prey, it will not let go. This analogy is similar to the analogies God gave in the Book of Joel of how the locusts cannot be stopped by us.

9 And they had breast-plates, as it were breast-plates of iron; and the sound of their wings was as the sound of chariots of many horses running to battle.

Breastplates of iron. Some like to compare that to Rome because of the Daniel 2 prophecy of the beast statue, but that's not the analogy here. This breastplate is a fake representation of the Hebrew priest's breastplate that had twelve jewels. In Revelation 9:17, we are told their breastplates also have jacinth stones (like zircon).

These may even suggest Satan's angels that are coming with Satan once they are booted out of Heaven down to this earth per the heavenly war in Revelation 12:7-9, which is still future to us.

10 And they had tails like scorpions, and there were stings in their tails: and their power was to hurt men five months.

The amount to time that the ark of Noah was upon the heights of the flood was 150 days per Genesis. Per the Hebrew reckoning, that 150 days equals a period of five months. Now God is Who sealed Noah and his inside the ark. For us at the end, Lord Jesus Christ is to be our Ark for the end of days, for this "five months".

11 And they had a king over them, who is the angel of the bottomless pit, whose name in the Hebrew language is Abaddon, but in the Greek language he hath his name Apollyon.

Both of those titles are about Satan. The name Apollyon is specific to the idea of perishing per the Greek. It is the root of the term 'perdition' in the phrase "son of perdition". Why?

It is because Satan and his angels are the ONLY ones already judged and sentenced to perish in the future "lake of fire". No flesh born man has been judged to that lake of fire yet, not even Judas Iscariot.

Satan wants to be THE KING, meaning our Heavenly Father and His Son. But he is a little king, a king over the bottomless pit. He is actually a covering cherub per Ezekiel 28, but also an angel, which can merely represent one in the heavenly order.

12 One woe is past; and behold, there come two woes more hereafter.

Those events on the 5th Trumpet - 1st Woe actually represent the preparation stage. The actual time for the main attack is next, on the 6th Trumpet - 2nd Woe.

Rev 9:12-21
12 One woe is past; and, behold, there come two woes more hereafter.
13 And the sixth angel sounded, and I heard a voice from the four horns of the golden altar which is before God,
14 Saying to the sixth angel which had the trumpet, "Loose the four angels which are bound in the great river Euphrates."

The sixth angel blows the 6th Trumpet, and the 2nd Woe period begins.

A voice from God's Altar in Heavens declares to loose the four angels bound at the river Euphrates. Why would this river be used?

The Euphrates river represents the most northern border of the lands which God gave to Israel (Genesis 15:18). The enemies of Israel dwelt on the other side of it in the northern quarters. Per Revelation 16:12, the 6th angel pours out his Vial and the waters of the Euphrates are dried up, that the way of the kings of the east might be prepared. That is pointing to a battle coming in Revelation 16 on the final 7th Vial. But here, this is a battle to happen prior to that. This is a 'spiritual battle' here, for one's soul, using deception.

15 And the four angels were loosed, which were prepared for an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year, for to slay the third part of men.

When God's Word points to a period using that, "an hour, and a day, and a month, and a year", it is being very emphatic about a specific time this event is prepared to happen. It is pointing to the time of the "great tribulation" Lord Jesus warned His Church about.

For to slay a third part of men, how? By war? No, because we already read before here in that time men will desire... to die, and won't be able to. This earth has never... seen a time like that yet, so what other time on earth could it mean, but the future when the false Messiah of 2 Thessalonians 2:3-4 gets here, working great signs and wonders claiming to be God? Thus this idea of slaying is about a spiritual slaying of one's mind and soul using deception by what comes out of the mouths of these locusts.

16 And the number of the army of the horsemen were two hundred thousand thousand: and I heard the number of them.

Back in Joel 2, God also called these locusts His army that He sent! They aren't a real military army though. They just attack spiritually like one, using an army as a symbol.

17 And thus I saw the horses in the vision, and them that sat on them, having breastplates of fire, and of jacinth, and brimstone: and the heads of the horses were as the heads of lions; and out of their mouths issued fire and smoke and brimstone.

Once again, what comes out of one's mouth? Words. And in this case by Satan's servants, it means LIES to cause deception.

18 By these three was the third part of men killed, by the fire, and by the smoke, and by the brimstone, which issued out of their mouths.

Meaning, by the LIES coming out of their mouths, one third of men are killed, 'spiritually' killed that is, their souls becoming like the spiritually dead.

Lord Jesus didn't show us right here in Rev.9 exactly what 'deception' that comes out of their mouths which will cause this spiritual death. He really shouldn't have to repeat it here, because He already showed us in the Matthew 24 and Mark 13 Scripture about the coming pseudo-Christ to Jerusalem that some will say 'Christ is here', but to not believe it. Apostle Paul revealed it too in 2 Thessalonians 2, and Apostle John in Revelation 13:11 forward. Even Paul pointed to the coming false Christ in 2 Corinthians 11 when he warned about the "another Jesus". That is who these locusts will be promoting when they arrive.

19 For their power is in their mouth, and in their tails: for their tails were like unto serpents, and had heads, and with them they do hurt.

That is the third... time we are shown the main attack method is by what comes out of their 'mouths.' So we have no excuse in not understanding this is about Deception caused by what comes out of their mouths.

20 And the rest of the men which were not killed by these plagues yet repented not of the works of their hands, that they should not worship devils, and idols of gold, and silver, and brass, and stone, and of wood: which neither can see, nor hear, nor walk:
21 Neither repented they of their murders, nor of their sorceries, nor of their fornication, nor of their thefts.
KJV

Since Revelation 9:15 already told us that the locusts are loosed to slay a 'third part of men', that is pointing to Zechariah 13...

Zech 13:8-9
8 And it shall come to pass, that in all the land, saith the LORD, two parts therein shall be cut off and die; but the third shall be left therein.

9 And I will bring the third part through the fire, and will refine them as silver is refined, and will try them as gold is tried: they shall call on My name, and I will hear them: I will say, 'It is My people': and they shall say, The LORD is my God.'

KJV

That breaks this down to 3 groups of people for this 1st and 2nd Woe periods. (Not necessarily in any order:

one part = those to be slain via Deception;
one part = the wicked who refuse to repent;
one part = God's elect that are brought through the fire.
