The Destruction Of This Planet. Not going to happen:

But the day of the Lord will come like a thief. The heavens will disappear with a roar; the elements will be destroyed by fire, and the earth and everything done in it will be laid bare.

Since everything will be destroyed in this way, what kind of people ought you to be? You ought to live holy and godly lives as you look forward to the Day of God and speed its coming. That day will bring about the destruction of the heavens by fire, and the elements will melt in the heat. 2 Peter 3:10-12

In this prophecy, it seems that there is coming a day when God is going to destroy the Earth by fire. But is that what is really meant here? Many think these three verses say that God will totally destroy the world.

If God is going to destroy the Earth, then it really doesn’t matter what we do with the natural resources of the planet. And if we use up a resource that causes a plant or animal species to go extinct, who cares if God is going to remove the whole planet anyway and take us to heaven, right? Well, let’s look into this:

If it can be shown that Peter is not prophesying the literal destruction of the Earth here, then it abrogates any theological argument that God will one day actually eliminate this world, whether by fire or any other means.

N.T. Wright gives this commentary regarding the passage in question from 2 Peter:

‘Here, at the end of this passage, we have a statement which in older translations of the Bible came out one way, but which, with all the biblical manuscripts we now have, certainly should be changed. In the older versions, this passage ends with the warning that ‘the earth and all the works on it will be burned up.’ A cosmic destruction: the end of the physical world! Is that really what Peter wrote?

In some of the best manuscripts of the New Testament, including two of the very best, the word for ‘will be burned up’ isn’t there. Instead, there is a Greek word which means ‘will be found’, or ‘will be discovered’, or ‘will be disclosed’. Perhaps ‘will be found out’ would be a better way of getting at the truth of the meaning.

What I believe has happened is this: Several early scribes, faced with ‘will be found’, thought to themselves, ‘That can’t be right! It makes no sense! Surely he meant “will be burnt up”. And so the translators put in their opinion’.

And look at the difference it makes! In conformity with the rest of the New Testament, Peter is not saying that the present world of space, time and matter is going to be burnt up and destroyed. The REBible says: .....brought to judgment.

What will happen, as many early Christian teachers said, is that actual literal fire will come upon the whole earth, as so comprehensively prophesied throughout the Bible, not to totally destroy, but to test everything out and to purify it by burning up the Lord’s enemies, Malachi 4:3, and to test His people; 1 Peter 4:12, 1 Corinthians 3:13-15 The earth will remain forever; Eccl 1:4, Ephesians 3:21, Psalms 78:69, Isaiah 45:18

Peter’s concern throughout the letter is with the judgment of humans for what they have done, not with the rest of Creation, although it seems that much will be dramatically changed on the forthcoming great and terrible Day of the Lord’s fiery vengeance and wrath and the world will never be the same again. Zephaniah 3:8, Revelation 6:12-17

There's a difference between the "destruction of the world" here on earth, and "destruction of the planet".

I agree with what you wrote, and that it is indeed "destruction of the world" here on earth, and not the "destruction of the planet" while this is occuring.

That being said, after the "destruction of the world" here on earth, Jesus will reign for 1000 years, known as the Millenium Kingdom. The Holy Bible does not state how long satan will be freed from his prison before he is thrown into the Lake of Fire for eternity (it states "a little season").

Revelation 21:1 states that the "first earth were passed away" (planet earth as we know it will be no more/destroyed): "And I saw a new heaven and a new earth: for the first heaven and the first earth were passed away; and there was no more sea.". This event occurs after the 1000+ year reign of Jesus in Revelation chapter 20. Which means the prophecy in 2 Peter chapter 3, of destroying planet earth will be fulfilled.

Your opinion and imaginations about the translators opinions and imaginations - seriously, that's your case?

No, sorry, but wordsmithing and speculations are not the elements of God's truth, and have no business being part of a bible study.

Nonetheless, your theory does not hold up scripture to scripture, for in the end there can be no planets such as this...for there is "no shadow of turning." James 1:17

Like all end day imaginations it is totally irrelevent as either we will already be with Jesus part of those returning with him or those on earth being caught up with him.

This alone will be of far greater importance to us. We 're with Jesus, I can see Jesus and other excited statements.
What happens to the earth will not be very important as we know now that there will be a new heaven and a new earth.

The prospect of being there with Jesus will be far more interesting then ,' was I right about what was going to happen when Jesus returned?'

    Matthew 5:5 (KJV)
5 Blessed are the meek: for they shall inherit the earth.
    Psalm 37:9 (KJV)
9 For evildoers shall be cut off: but those that wait upon the LORD, they shall inherit the earth.

    2 Peter 3:10 (KJV)
10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise,
and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
    Galatians 4:9-11 (KJV)
9 But now, after that ye have known God, or rather are known of God, how turn ye again to the weak and beggarly elements, whereunto ye desire again to be in bondage?
10 Ye observe days, and months, and times, and years.
11 I am afraid of you, lest I have bestowed upon you labour in vain.

What element got burned up ?

Is there going to be a new heaven up above, what's wrong with it ?
Holy City is coming down to earth with the meek, and the 144,000 Jews are alive here also.

    Just some inputs

Has anyone considered that the new heavens and new earth are elsewhere in the universe? In a different place. This galaxy will be destroyed....all trace of it. But the universe is big....why limit life to this one place?

The following may prove of some benefit.

    In response to the scientific view, and to the supposition that the sun is destined to become a Red Giant Star sometime billions of years from now, and then possibly go super nova and clasped in on it-self even further in the future, we find this to be contrary to the Scriptural testimony respecting the same. Let us remember as God has subjected both the heavens (the spiritual heavens as well as the natural heavens, i.e. the universe) and man to the laws of nature, He is still the writer of that law, this does not imply that He will change things in order to sustain the earth, for He changes not, but to the contrary we believe that He has so arranged things so as to perpetually sustain not only the earth but also the sun for the benefit of His creation. In support of this we summit the following scriptures;

One generation passes away, and another generation cometh: but THE EARTH ABIDES FOREVER.” Eccl 1:4

For thus saith the LORD that created the heavens; God himself that formed the earth and made it; he hath established it, HE CREATED IT NOT IN VAIN, HE FORMED IT TO BE INHABITED: I am the LORD; and there is none else.” Isa 45:18

The heaven, even the heavens, are the Lord’s: but THE EARTH HATH HE GIVEN TO THE CHILDREN OF MEN.” Psa 115:16

Thus saith the LORD, The heaven is my throne, and THE EARTH IS MY FOOTSTOOL…” Isa 66:1 (See Matt 5:35 also)

“…I WILL MAKE THE PLACE OF MY FEET GLORIOUS.” Isa 60:13 (The LORD here speaking of the Kingdom to come when He shall establish righteousness throughout the earth.)

Thy kingdom is AN EVERLASTING KINGDOM, and thy dominion endures throughout all generations.” Psa 145:13

Give to the king (Whom thou hast appointed, Christ, during the Millennial age.), thy judgments, O God, and thy righteousness unto the king’s (Jehovah’s) son. He shall judge thy people with righteousness (Acts 17:31), and thy poor with judgment. The mountains (New ruling powers of Christ's Kingdom.) shall bring peace to the people, and the little hills (The tributary powers under the main government), by righteousness. He shall judge the poor of the people; he shall save the children of the needy, and shall break in pieces the oppressor (All oppressive systems and institutions--civil, social, financial and religious.). They shall fear thee AS LONG AS THE SUN AND THE MOON ENDURES, throughout all generations. He shall come down like rain upon the mown grass: as showers that water the earth. In his days (That is in "the world to come, wherein dwells righteousness." Heb 2:5; 2 Pet 3:13) shall the righteous flourish; and abundance of peace SO LONG AS THE MOON ENDURES.” Psa 72: 1-7

And how long will the moon endure? According to what we have just read as long as his days last, and how long are his days to last?

And there was given him dominion, and glory, and a kingdom, that all people, nations, and languages, should serve him: his dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and his kingdom that which shall not be destroyed.” Daniel 7:14

These scriptures and many more give evidence to the fact that it is God’s intention that not only shall the sun last forever, but likewise the earth and the moon, for God has established them and they shall not be moved.

(1 Chron 16:30; Psa 93:1; 96:10) Note: a distinction is made between theworldas referred to in the sited text, and theearthwhich is said to be moved in other passages.

A correct understanding of symbolic language will greatly assist the bible student in “rightly dividing the word of God” and thus coming to the correct meaning of any given passage.

The wordworldas used in 1 Chron 16:30 applies to the globe or physical earth itself, whereas the wordearthas used in Isa 24:19,20 and in 2 Pet 3:10 for instance, refer to the social order or structure as is now prevalent. In the study of symbolism you cannot rely upon the definitions as given in your concordance, but must rather compare scripture with scripture in order to come to the true intention of the words used

    As for 2 Pet 3:10,

The day of the Lord will come (Greek, heko, will arrive; be here) as a thief in the night (unobserved, quietly) in which the heavens (the ecclesiastical heavens, the ruling powers, both religious and political) will pass away with a great noise (turmoil and confusion), and the elements (of society) will melt with fervent heat (dissolve into tumult, strife, human passion, wrath, and anarchy in the great time of trouble); both the earth (the social order as now presently organized under Satan’s control) and the works (pride, rank, selfishness and etc.) which are in it will be burned up (swallowed up, dissolved, eradicated, destroyed).”

While this word for "heavens" can mean space, in this instance I believe it is talking about the sky which is also a valid definition.

Indeed it is, and in doing so, it proves your old earth planetary idea to be wrong: No shadow means, no solar and planetary system as such.

With all due respect, Scott, it is comparing God to the lights in the heavens (sky), It is saying that God is constant (no variableness) and unmoving unlike His creation, the sun and the moon and the stars that seem to move due to the earth's rotation, where sometimes we are in shadow (night) and other times, in the light (daylight); God is always light, in Him their is no darkness at all. The context of this passage is dealing with temptations versus the gifts God gives is to help us overcome those temptations.

No, He has created us in His image and the ultimate context He has manifest is a mere "dim" view of His greater reality - the only actual reality, which is on high. You are wrongly considering the objects of this parable created existence to be the subject, but they are not. This is the lesson of the parables. Those who have ears to hear and eyes to see, are to hear and see what is not clear at face value.

You are trying to reinterpret this with the help of NT Wright, who is definitely not a conservative Christian, and has some very unorthodox ideas. And his nonsense about the discovery of "the best"manuscripts is just that -- nonsense. Those are the worst manuscripts but they change nothing in this regard.

It is not that planet earth will be destroyed, but whatever in on the surface of the earth will certainly be burned up SUPERNATURALLY. That is because everything that is defiled, contaminated, polluted, unholy, and corrupt must be CLEANSED. That is a cleansing fire which reduces everything on earth to ashes, so that a New Earth -- WHEREIN DWELLETH RIGHTEOUSNESS -- can be established by God for eternity.

is a pastor in the seventh Church of Revelation.

The second you know he is Anglican that says a ton.

I will stick with the Bible. The earth will be reduced to loose Atoms that will be reformed into the new earth.

Can't get more cleansed than that.

    New heaven, not new heavens.

It says the heavens are destroyed. That is our atmosphere and everything in outerspace, meaning the universe.

God's dwelling place is not in the universe.

Things will be returned like they were in Genesis 1:1.

There will be the earth most sees and there will be the physical heaven, meaning everything above the earth in the physical universe. No sun and moon. No night.

The elements get broken down to Atoms. Atoms are not elements. Elements are composed of atoms.

Think of this breaking down as a nuclear bomb on a universal scale.

NT Wright points out a perfectly valid issue of translation, where we have received a rendering that does not tell the correct story.

I agree with you. That is exactly what is prophesied to happen, although there will be survivors.
Note that Peter is prophesying about the forthcoming Day of the Lord's fiery wrath, not the New Heavens and the New Earth, until he gets to verse 13.
Chapter 3 is in a sequence of events, starting from now, when scoffers are saying: When will these things happen?

I find it hard to credit, that a group of intelligent people are discussing scenarios of impossible things, as though they will actually take place.
Ideas like an instantaneous change into glorified bodies, before any trials and testing, let alone Judgment. A rapture to heaven of the Church, a fable that has consumed tons of paper and ink, still totally without any sure consensus of when it could happen.
All these issues have been argued, fought over even; for a hundred plus years. Doesn't this make people question the validity of those beliefs?

But what is most concerning, is the fact that the Prophetic Word does plainly tell us what God actually has planned for His people and the world in these last few years of the Church age.
That people are unable to comprehend those prophesies, is told us by Jesus in Matthew 11:25 and 1 Corinthians 3:18-20, where those learned, so called wise theologians and Bible experts, cannot understand these truths. Also in Isaiah 29:9-12, we are told that people who choose to believe false theories will be blinded to the truth and 2 Thessalonians 2:11 says that God will place those with closed minds under a compelling delusion, which makes them believe what is false.
Then: 2 Thess 2:12 So that all who have not believed the truth, but made falsehood their choice, may be brought to Judgment.

Fellow Christians, my aim and desire is for all of you and as many as I can reach, to be presented with the scriptural Truth; the undeniable facts of prophecy and a common sense, logical sequence of what will happen in the near future to all of us.

It is a message of hope and God's Promise of protection during a short time of difficulty, and then how He will mightily Bless His faithful people.
