2 Corinthians 1:21-22 KJV
21) Now he which stablisheth us with you in Christ, and hath anointed us, is God;
22) Who hath also sealed us, and given the earnest of the Spirit in our hearts.
2 Corinthians 5:5 KJV
5) Now he that hath wrought us for the selfsame thing is God, who also hath given unto us the earnest of the Spirit.
Ephesians 1:13-14 KJV
13) In whom ye also trusted, after that ye heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation: in whom also after that ye believed, ye were sealed with that holy Spirit of promise,
14) Which is the earnest of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, unto the praise of his glory.
The earnest of our inheritance, a portion which we receive to give assurance that we will receive the rest.
Are these verses saying that we've received a portion of the Holy Spirit, and that we are to receive the fullness of the Holy Spirit at a later time? Do these passages support a "Baptism of the Holy Spirit", subsequent to our baptism into Jesus Christ?
Ephesians 1:13-14 tell us that the earnest of our inheritance is in fact the Holy Spirit Himself.
Romans 8:23 KJV
23) And not only they, but ourselves also, which have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, waiting for the adoption, to wit, the redemption of our body.
Philippians 3:20-21 KJV
20) For our conversation is in heaven; from whence also we look for the Saviour, the Lord Jesus Christ:
21) Who shall change our vile body, that it may be fashioned like unto his glorious body, according to the working whereby he is able even to subdue all things unto himself.
Romans 8:9-11 KJV
9) But ye are not in the flesh, but in the Spirit, if so be that the Spirit of God dwell in you. Now if any man have not the Spirit of Christ, he is none of his.
10) And if Christ be in you, the body is dead because of sin; but the Spirit is life because of righteousness.
11) But if the Spirit of him that raised up Jesus from the dead dwell in you, he that raised up Christ from the dead shall also quicken your mortal bodies by his Spirit that dwelleth in you.
