Beware of the false doctrines of Men that seek after the glory of man...

    Doctrine of God: John 7:16-18
[16] Jesus answered them, and said, My doctrine is not mine, but his that sent me. [17] If any man will do his will, he shall know of the doctrine, whether it be of God, or whether I speak of myself. [18] He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory: but he that seeketh his glory that sent him, the same is true, and no unrighteousness is in him.

How many doctrines speak of man? How many hours are debated over man’s free-will and man’s ability, and man’s right and the work of man’s hands? Man. Man. Man. Seems to be the division in what man can do which God, unless it is wrong, said “nothing” in and of himself. What doctrine seeks the glory of Him that sent? How can we tell the difference in a sea of confusion and pointing of fingers and defending and arguing over our positions? “He that speaketh of himself seeketh his own glory:” seems straightforward and no beating around it. Does a doctrine speak of man or does it speak of God? Does a man speak of himself, or of Him ...who he says sent him? Are we listening to tell the difference in seeking of man’s glory ...or of God’s.

    Doctrine(s) of men: Matthew 15:9
[9] But in vain they do worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

    Mark 7:7-8
[7] Howbeit in vain do they worship me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men. [8] For laying aside the commandment of God, ye hold the tradition of men, as the washing of pots and cups: and many other such like things ye do.

    Colossians 2:20-22
[20] Wherefore if ye be dead with Christ from the rudiments of the world, why, as though living in the world, are ye subject to ordinances, [21] (Touch not; taste not; handle not; [22] Which all are to perish with the using after the commandments and doctrines of men?

    Galatians 1:10-12
[10] For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ. [11] But I certify you, brethren, that the gospel which was preached of me is not after man. [12] For I neither received it of man, neither was I taught it , but by the revelation of Jesus Christ.

John 7:18 New International Version (NIV)
18 Whoever speaks on their own does so to gain personal glory, but he who seeks the glory of the one who sent him is a man of truth; there is nothing false about him.

    Excellent post!

Unfortunately, I suspect that all who are guilty of violating these biblical principles, will say they don't and swear they never ever do. :(

It seems to me so often that popular evangelicals and politicians have a lot in common in the way they behave.

There is a problem with how we define ‘man’s doctrine.

IMO ‘man’s doctrine’ is any doctrine that does not conform to God’s will - consumerism is a good example because it anathema to God’s command to love your neighbor as yourself.

IMO many people here seem to promote the idea that any idea that man generates sound be included as ‘man’s doctrine’ because man is completely depraved. Apparently, nothing that Jesus has taught us can improve this state of depravity! We are helpless and hopeless and every thing we produce from our cellar state requires a diaper change.

We seem to forget we are new creators - washed in the blood of Christ. If the theology we generate complies with what Christ has taught us.....it is good.

It all needs to be rooted in Scripture, as final authority.

Of course that is true. Unfortunately, this too is misunderstood and has become the doctrines of men also, in much the same ways as the law.

If was Jesus, the Word, who clarified the proper perspective to have toward the scriptures, saying, "My words are spirit." Thus, the spirit of God is the source of all truth wherein there is no misinterpretation, but One Truth. Whereas, it is the written word and man's interpretations that are the cause of many lies regarding God.

I do think that where a preacher clearly declares, Thus saith the Lord from Scripture, it's not for men to overrule it. It's all about SOLA SCRIPTURA.

You know the Bible is not Jesus, right? Cause, John 17:17 is talking about Jesus.
Even if it was referring to scripture - it is not an exclusive statement.

Psalm 119.89 is referring to Jesus, unless you believe the Bible came down from Heaven and died for your sins.

Psalm 119.105 is not exclusively talking about a book.

    John 21:25

    On point Scott,
1 Corinthians 2:10 "But God hath revealed them unto us by his Spirit: for the Spirit searcheth all things, yea, the deep things of God.
1 Corinthians 2:11 "For what man knoweth the things of a man, save the spirit of man which is in him? even so the things of God knoweth no man, but the Spirit of God.
1 Corinthians 2:12 "Now we have received, not the spirit of the world, but the spirit which is of God; that we might know the things that are freely given to us of God.
1 Corinthians 2:13 "Which things also we speak, not in the words which man's wisdom teacheth, but which the Holy Ghost teacheth; comparing spiritual things with spiritual.
1 Corinthians 2:14 "But the natural man receiveth not the things of the Spirit of God: for they are foolishness unto him: neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned.
1 Corinthians 2:15 "But he that is spiritual judgeth all things, yet he himself is judged of no man.
1 Corinthians 2:16 "For who hath known the mind of the Lord, that he may instruct him? But we have the mind of Christ.
