Hebrews 9:27-28, verse 27 is one of the most sobering statements in the Bible, every person gets one life, one death and after that, judgment, there is no second attempt, no coming back to try again, this life, the one you are living right now, is the only one you will ever have. But Hebrews chapter 9 does not end with a warning, it ends with a promise, Jesus Christ will appear a second time and when he does, it will not be to deal with sin, that was finished at the cross, he will come for salvation, he will come to deliver everything the will promised. The will was written before the foundation of the world, the death that activated it happened 2,000 years ago, the inheritance has been legally yours since the moment you believed, but the full distribution has not happened yet.
The second coming is not a second sacrifice, it is the final delivery, it is the day when every promise in the will is placed directly into the hands of ever heir. Why did Jesus Christ have to die, sin lives in the conscience and only human blood could reach that deep, animal blood washed the outside, Jesus Christ’s blood cleansed the inside. The problem was never your behavior, it was your soul and only a perfect, willing, human offering could go where the stain actually lived. Blood represents life and sin costs life, God was not demanding violence, he was providing the only currency that could pay the debt, the life of the flesh is in the blood and the life that was given on the cross was the most valuable life that ever existed.
A will does not activate until the one who made it dies, God filled his will with promises so vast, they stretch across eternity, forgiveness, access, inheritance, sonship, but none of it could be collected while the testator lived. The cross was not just a payment, it was the legal activation of everything God ever promised you and the one who wrote the will, the one who died to activate it, is the same one who rose from the dead to make sure you receive every single thing he promised, he is not finished, he is in heaven right now appearing before God for you, and one day, Jesus Christ will return, not to die again, but to deliver everything the will contains.
Galatians 5:24, Paul then tells you what has happened to your old nature, it is something that has already happened, when you put your faith in Jesus Christ, your old self died with him on the cross. The power of sin over was broken, crucifixion is a brutal image, it is a slow, painful death, Paul uses this word to show you that you must be ruthless with your sin. You do not coddle your sinful desires, you do not play with them, you kill them, you recognize that they are enemies of your soul. Although the flesh was defeated at the cross, you have to live out that reality every day. You have to look at your jealousy and say, you are dead, you have no authority over me. You have to look at your lust and say, I am dead to you, it is an active calming of the victory Jesus Christ already won.
