The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law.
The sting of sinning against God is death to the soul.
The power of the law is to tell sinners how they are sinning against God, by knowing assuredly what God says is sinning against Him.
Before the law of God written on earth, man did not know exactly whether they were sinning against God or not, and so in ignorance they all were sinning against God, and so death passed upon all souls of men who were sinning ignorantly, having no law of God for them to read and do.
For as many as have sinned without law shall also perish without law: and as many as have sinned in the law shall be judged by the law.
Therefore by mercy to perishing sinners, Christ has given His law Personally to His people and the world, that His people and the world of sinners can now know of a certain exactly what is sinning against God.
All people, whether sinners or saints, ought therefore thank God every day for showing us exactly what sinning against Him is, that by repentance of sinning against His law, our souls might not end in death without God ignorantly.
I hate vain thoughts: but thy law do I love.
Lovers of God and His righteousness, love His law for telling us what is not righteous with Him, but is only vain thought and imagination for sinning against Him.
Those who hate righteousness and love the vanity of sinning instead, of course hate His law, and wish His law were dead.
The fool hath said in his heart, there is no law of God.
