"And he took bread, and when he had given thanks, he broke it and gave it to them, saying, 'This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.'"(Luke 22:19)Our Lord said that to emphasize that He came as a human being. Because we all know thathuman beings eat and drink, and we also know that human beings bleed and die, and thatHe gave up His life for us. So when you eat, remember what He did for you so that you mayhave life.

"'Food is meant for the stomach and the stomach for food' — and God will destroy both oneand the other. The body is not meant for sexual immorality, but for the Lord, and the Lordfor the body." 1 Corinthians 6:13 (ESV)"It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh is no help at all. The words that I have spokento you are spirit and life." John 6:63 (ESV)"Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, 'He gave them bread from heavento eat.' Jesus then said to them, 'Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you thebread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is hewho comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.' They said to him, 'Sir, give us this breadalways.'Jesus said to them, 'I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoeverbelieves in me shall never thirst.'" John 6:31-35 (ESV)"He who has an ear, let him hear what the Spirit says to the churches. To the one who conquersI will give some of the hidden manna, and I will give him a white stone, with a new name writtenon the stone that no one knows except the one who receives it." Revelation 2:17 (ESV)"Do not labor for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal."John 6:27 (ESV)

The body of Christ (breaking of bread) may not be for all but the disciples only. The bread itself is Christ and Christ is in us all (Acts 9:4), I think it was the disciples only who were commanded to eat this bread and not for all.Acts 9:4 ESV And falling to the ground he heard a voice saying to him, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?"Acts 22:8 ESV And I answered, 'Who are you, Lord?' And he said to me, 'I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting.'Acts 10:13 ESV And there came a voice to him: "Rise, Peter; kill and eat."Hebrews 2:10 ESV For it was fitting that he, for whom and by whom all things exist, in bringing many sons to glory, should make the founder of their salvation perfect through suffering.Hebrews 2:11 ESV For he who sanctifies and those who are sanctified all have one source. That is why he is not ashamed to call them brothers,So next time you receive holy communion (eucharist) you may want to consider these, what it really means?

Jhn 6:51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. guess i missed where he modified "any man" to only the disciples

It means to believe in the sufferings of Christ which reveal the true nature of God. I don't think it has something to do with literal bread, it's different in John's gospel, we won't find the bread breaking (last supper) being told in John's gospel.1 Timothy 3:16 ESV Great indeed, we confess, is the mystery of godliness: He was manifested in the flesh, vindicated by the Spirit, seen by angels, proclaimed among the nations, believed on in the world, taken up in glory.

You may not find it in John, but many people do and see the whole Chapter as one Bread of Life Discourse - (and the longest quote of Jesus speaking at one setting in the Bible). Not the same event to be sure, but I do think there are definitely parallels, parallels which many of us believe make Him speaking of one and the same thing - His Body and Blood.Passover - a sacrifice to cover all - save from deathJhn 6:4 And the passover, a feast of the Jews, was nigh. Luk 22:13 And they went, and found as he had said unto them: and they made ready the passover. Breaking and giving thanks -BreadLast SupperLuk 22:19 And he took bread, and gave thanks, and brake [it], and gave unto them, saying, This is my body which is given for you: this do in remembrance of me 3 times - I am the Bread Jhn 6:11 And Jesus took the loaves; and when he had given thanks, he distributed to the disciples, and the disciples to them that were set down; and likewise of the fishes as much as they would. Jhn 6:35 And Jesus said unto them, I am the bread of life: he that cometh to me shall never hunger; and he that believeth on me shall never thirst. Jhn 6:48 I am that bread of life. Jhn 6:51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. Wine - My BloodLast SupperMar 14:22 ¶ And as they did eat, Jesus took bread, and blessed, and brake [it], and gave to them, and said, Take, eat: this is my body. And he took the cup, and when he had given thanks, he gave [it] to them: and they all drank of it. And he said unto them, This is my blood of the new testament, which is shed for many. Bread of Life Discourse - this is My BloodJhn 6:51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven: if any man eat of this bread, he shall live for ever: and the bread that I will give is my flesh, which I will give for the life of the world. The Jews therefore strove among themselves, saying, How can this man give us [his] flesh to eat? Then Jesus said unto them, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except ye eat the flesh of the Son of man, and drink his blood, ye have no life in you. Whoso eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, hath eternal life; and I will raise him up at the last day. For my flesh is meat indeed, and my blood is drink indeed. He that eateth my flesh, and drinketh my blood, dwelleth in me, and I in him. As the living Father hath sent me, and I live by the Father: so he that eateth me, even he shall live by me. This is that bread which came down from heaven: not as your fathers did eat manna, and are dead: he that eateth of this bread shall live for ever. I realize many do not agree or see the connection, I do. And am not arguing or saying you are not entitled to see it differently. Am just saying I can see the connection between these events and I believe He wanted us to see that connection as well.

The first three gospels were addressed to the disciples while John's gospel was addressed to the little ones. The disciples will die but the little ones will never die but they will be purified. The bread that comes down from heaven is the Holy Spirit which the Son of Man will give, it's the food that endures to eternal life.Zechariah 13:7 ESV "Awake, O sword, against my shepherd, against the man who stands next to me," declares the LORD of hosts. "Strike the shepherd, and the sheep will be scattered; I will turn my hand against the little ones.Zechariah 13:8 ESV In the whole land, declares the LORD, two thirds shall be cut off and perish, and one third shall be left alive.Zechariah 13:9 ESV And I will put this third into the fire, and refine them as one refines silver, and test them as gold is tested. They will call upon my name, and I will answer them. I will say, 'They are my people'; and they will say, 'The LORD is my God.'"John 16:32 ESV Behold, the hour is coming, indeed it has come, when you will be scattered, each to his own home, and will leave me alone. Yet I am not alone, for the Father is with me.In the last part of John, we were shown how Peter must die and the disciple whom Jesus loved (John means Grace) might never die.John 21:18 ESV Truly, truly, I say to you, when you were young, you used to dress yourself and walk wherever you wanted, but when you are old, you will stretch out your hands, and another will dress you and carry you where you do not want to go."John 21:19 ESV (This he said to show by what kind of death he was to glorify God.) And after saying this he said to him, "Follow me."John 21:20 ESV Peter turned and saw the disciple whom Jesus loved following them, the one who had been reclining at table close to him and had said, "Lord, who is it that is going to betray you?"John 21:21 ESV When Peter saw him, he said to Jesus, "Lord, what about this man?"John 21:22 ESV Jesus said to him, "If it is my will that he remain until I come, what is that to you? You follow me!"John 6:27 ESV Do not labor for the food that perishes, but for the food that endures to eternal life, which the Son of Man will give to you. For on him God the Father has set his seal."

So you have said. Again am not here to convince or sway you and am very familar with other views of the same text. Just trying to point out there are reasons some of us say we see a connection.Am just saying in the longest speech He is recorded giving, He says three times "I am" that Bread and we are to eat Him and He does so on a Passover and in a manner evoking a connection with the latter event. In other instances where He says something three times, people usually indicate some very special significance to the point being made. To me this understanding of John 6 ties better with the other verses regarding the Last Supper than simply suggesting He wanted us to repeatedly hold a memorial service for Him. It gives the event of the OP, the Last Supper, much more meaning and great importance for them then and us now. An importance that in my view better explains the time, space devoted in John 6 and also Jesus's emphasis in those verses for me to make that connection to the Last Supper. Works for me, I realize it does not work for many here.

What really works is when we understand what the scriptures say as the truth sets us free. After about 30 years of study, consulting with a myriad of writers and the original Greek, the last supper was just that, not a perpetual ritual. We don't make a doctrine out of one verse which is what we have done with communion as the words "do this in remembrance of me only appears once."In addition "do this" means once only, not continually.Breaking of bread in the NT means a meal. I asked my uni lecturer, a very godly Anglican "did they have communion in the NT."His reply was "no. They met for communal meals. It wasn't until the thïrd century that the ritual of communion began when Constantine legalised christianity and introduced the clergy class". Even if you insist on the ritual, becuase christianity was a sect of Judaism, they would have celebrated it only once a year, not every week or as the catholics do, every day. Also bear in mind that the last supper was a celebration of their deliverance from Egypt and the hope of a messiah. If Jesus was the Messiah, there would have been no need for them to have a meal to celebrate a coming messiah as he had already come. A bit like saying "I am your messiah but keep meeting in the hope I will come."The Corinthian record was not about communion. It was about those with money abusing the body of Christ at their communal meal.True communion is fellowshipping with your fellow saints around a meal as they did in the NT church (see acts 2). This meal more than anything else impressed people about their love for one another. Regardless of you standing in society, whether you were a Jew, gentile, male or female, slave or free, rich or poor, they all ate together. That did not happen in those days in general society.
