Romans 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

We have justification unto eternal life by faith alone.

5:2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

By faith in Christ Jesus we have access to grace and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

5:3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience;

5:4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope:

Our suffering should be viewed in light of the exceeding and eternal glory we shall have; our suffering on one hand is outweighed by our future promised hope of glory on the other hand(2 Corinthians 4:17).

5:5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

Hope is the certainty that we know and rest in the love of God. It is not our love for God, but rather, God's love to us. This hope in God's love is shed in our hearts by the Holy Ghost given us (Ephesians 1:13 2 Corinthians 1:22 Titus 3:5).

5:6 For when we were yet without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly.

5:7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die: yet peradventure for a good man some would even dare to die.

5:8 But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.

This is the love of God shed abroad in our hearts in Romans 5:5. Christ died for the ungodly to pay the penalty of our sin (2 Corinthians 5:21).

5:9 Much more then, being now justified by his blood, we shall be saved from wrath through him.

We are now justified unto eternal life by his shed blood by the cross. We have been saved from wrath through Christ (1 Thessalonians 1:10).

5:10 For if, when we were enemies, we were reconciled to God by the death of his Son, much more, being reconciled, we shall be saved by his life.

The death of Christ reconciled us to God, and being reconciled his resurrection life saves us (Ephesians 2:4-5 Colossians 2:13 Romans 4:25 Colossians 3:4).

5:11 And not only so, but we also joy in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, by whom we have now received the atonement.

We can rejoice that we have the righteousness of Christ Jesus imputed to us and have been justified unto eternal life (Isaiah 61:10 Romans 4:22-25). We now have the atonement having been reconciled to God by Jesus Christ and his death and resurrection (2 Corinthians 5:18-19 1 Corinthians 15:1-4).

The love of the Lord shed abroad in our hearts is something that is active in our lives as believers.

We live out this love because it dwells within us.

It is not only God's love for us that is shed abroad in our hearts; but God sheds abroad His love in our hearts so that we will practically live it out in our lives.

It does in fact translate into our love for God and neighbor; for it is given to us as a gift: and since we have received that gift it belongs to us and will be used by us. It is something that dwells within us.

Romans 5:5 and Romans 13:8-10 therefore coincide as scripture that tells us that the righteousness of the law is fulfilled in us who do not walk after the flesh but after the Spirit (Romans 8:4).
