1 John 4

1 Beloved, believe not every spirit, but try the spirits whether they are of God: because many false prophets are gone out into the world.
2 Hereby know ye the Spirit of God: Every spirit that confesseth that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is of God:
3 And every spirit that confesseth not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh is not of God: and this is that spirit of antichrist, whereof ye have heard that it should come; and even now already is it in the world.
4 Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is he that is in you, than he that is in the world.
5 They are of the world: therefore speak they of the world, and the world heareth them.
6 We are of God: he that knoweth God heareth us; he that is not of God heareth not us. Hereby know we the spirit of truth, and the spirit of error.

What does it mean to confess not that Jesus Christ is come in the flesh? Who are they?

How is this the spirit of antichrist?

How does this help us to know who the false prophets are?

Much love!

This has to do with the sin of the Nicolaitans. (Greasy grace) (Sin so grace may abound) Jude 1:4 turning the grace of God into licentiousness.

What a lie that is! Not you, them!

I think that's what many of these false teachers do. I've never heard that, "greasy grace", sure does evoke an idea though!

How do you suppose the teaching of licentiousness is related to this not confessing Jesus is come in the flesh?

Much love!

Jesus is come in the flesh, this is such a packed statement. First, that Jesus IS one who can come in the flesh. Then that He did. And what that means. It means that there is the earthly, and there is the heavenly, and the heavenly has come into the earthly.

We know this because we are of God. His children. Flesh gives birth to flesh, and spirit gives birth to spirit. We are the spirit children of God.

This makes us so completely other than the flesh. Totally different sorts of beings. To know that Jesus - not just some guy, Jesus, the real Jesus, Who the Bible says He is, This Jesus has come in the flesh.

And "has come", perfect tense, has come, and remains, in the flesh. The risen Jesus. Neither decayed in a grave nor become a spirit, incarnate yet today. Our High Priest. Our brother, born of God, in human flesh, God Himself.

1 John 4:1-3 is about the Nicolaitans who were Gnostics, and taught his followers that Jesus only came and died in Spirit, but not in the flesh. From that he taught that only sins of the spirit were sins, but sins of the flesh were to be committed daily for grace to abound. They thought this way they were getting closer to God. They did not recognize their sins to be sins. John basically quotes their beliefs in 1 John 1:6, 8 and 10. John wanted his congregation to recognize them because they were trying to infiltrate all the churches and could presently even be among them, thus the "we." They do not walk in the light, and they have no need to confess their sins to be cleansed, because they believe sinning in the flesh is necessary. John would have wanted them converted. Those verses do not apply to Christians who have been born again and walk in the light. We are 1 John 1:7. Our sins were cleansed when we repented. Verse 9 is for them to become Christians. But other false doctrines say "we will always be in the flesh and always sin." One person really was the closest to being a Nicolaitan today, and I'm sure there are more, when he said "I am saved because my spirit is saved, but my flesh is not." He also said that he would stop sinning in the flesh when his body was changed in the twinkling of an eye. On the forums there are also those who believe obedience is a work. As long as you trust that Jesus will save you, there is nothing good you can do that will ever keep you saved, and no amount of sins will separate you from God.

This is a tough one, for many who are of God talk in their sleep the things of slumber and not of the truth, and grieve the Holy Spirit. Such can bellow out half-truths until the last our, even unto death, serving only to prolong the day. For similar behavior, Christ prayed, "Father forgive them, for they know not what they do." Nonetheless, it pleased God to make what they intended as against [anti] Christ, that it should be for good in spite of them.

And then again, there are those who are sons of Satan, who never return from the darkness.
