The Whole Armor of God: Part 2 - Walking By Faith, and the Power of God's Word

“Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all, to stand.” - Ephesians 6:13

Having covered the helmet, breastplate, and belt, we now move to the remaining pieces that prepare us to stand firm and move forward in spiritual victory. The first pieces protect the inner life: our soul made up of heart, mind, will, and emotions. The next pieces empower the believer to live out that reality in action.

The Christian life is not one of retreat but of advancement. God has equipped us not only to withstand the enemy’s attacks but also to move forward with peace, faith, and the living Word.

4. The Shoes of Peace: Walk Ready And Stable

“…and having shod your feet with the preparation of the gospel of peace.” - Ephesians 6:15

Roman soldiers wore strong sandals reinforced with iron studs for traction and grip. Without them, even the most well-armored warrior could slip and fall. Spiritually, the shoes of peace symbolize firm footing in the truth of the Gospel.

Peace is both defensive and offensive. It’s defensive because it anchors us when trials and storms try to shake us. It’s offensive because we carry that same peace into a lost and dying world, spreading the message of the good news.

“How beautiful are the feet of those who preach the gospel of peace, who bring glad tidings of good things!” - Romans 10:15

The peace of Christ steadies us when fear tries to rise. Philippians 4:7 promises, “The peace of God, which surpasses all understanding, will guard your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.” When you walk in his peace, you become unshakable. The same peace that guards your steps also guides your witness through the Holy Spirit. As we stand firm in the Gospel, we bring God’s peace to a world in chaos and extend his Kingdom with every step.

5. The Shield of Faith: Quenching the Fiery Arrows

“Above all, taking the shield of faith with which you will be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked one.” - Ephesians 6:16

A Roman soldier’s shield was large, often covered in leather soaked in water to extinguish flaming arrows. Faith acts in the same way. It quenches the fiery lies and accusations the enemy hurls toward our mind, heart, and emotions.

Faith is both defensive and offensive. It protects our confidence in God’s promises when doubts arise. It gives us the faith to move forward into what God has spoken, even when circumstances seem contrary.

“This is the victory that has overcome the world - our faith.” - 1 John 5:4

The enemy attacks through fear, delay, and deception, but faith extinguishes every dart by trusting what God has already said. When the mind says,
“I can’t,” faith declares, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” - Philippians 4:13. Faith doesn’t ignore the battle; it overcomes it by standing on the unshakable nature of God’s Word.

When you raise your shield of faith, you are saying, “God is who He says He is, and His Word will not fail.” That confidence is the posture of victory.

6. The Sword of the Spirit: Living And Active Word Of God

“…and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God.” - Ephesians 6:17

The sword is the only part of the armor described as a weapon, but it’s more than that. It is both offensive and defensive, depending on how it is used. The “word” here is rhema, a spoken word, a declaration of truth in the moment of battle.

When Jesus faced Satan in the wilderness, He didn’t argue or reason, he declared the Word: “It is written…” - Matthew 4:4, 7, 10. Each time, the enemy’s attack was silenced. The Word of God, when spoken in faith, cuts through lies and darkness with divine precision and power to take down enemy strongholds.

“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword…” - Hebrews 4:12

To wield the sword effectively, it must live in your heart and actively in your life. It is not enough to own a Bible; you must know it, speak it, and walk in it daily. The Holy Spirit gives life to the Word and power to your declaration. When the enemy says you are defeated, speak the Word: “No weapon formed against me shall prosper” - Isaiah 54:17. The sword becomes the voice of victory when it is spoken through a believer whose faith stands firm in Christ.

Prayer: Activating Power

“Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, being watchful to this end…” - Ephesians 6:18

Prayer is not an optional addition to the armor; it is what brings it to life. Without prayer, the armor lies dormant; with prayer, it becomes alive and active.
Through prayer, we stay connected to our Commander, Jesus, through the Holy Spirit. It is the means by which strategies are received, strength is renewed, and peace is restored. Paul says to “pray in the Spirit on all occasions” because prayer keeps us alert to the enemy’s movements and sensitive to God’s direction.

Prayer is both defensive and offensive. It defends by surrounding us with God’s presence and strengthens our endurance. It is offensive when we intercede on behalf of the saints and it also pulls others out of darkness through spiritual warfare.

"And have mercy on those who doubt; save others by snatching them out of the fire; to others show mercy with fear, hating even the garment stained by the flesh." Jude 1:22-23

When you pray the Word, you combine the sword of the Spirit with divine power from heaven. The armor becomes complete. Every piece is empowered by communion with God through the Holy Spirit.

Conclusion: Standing Firm and Advancing Forward

The full armor of God is a lifestyle of spiritual awareness and readiness. The battle is not only to resist but to advance and take long-held ground from the enemy. When your feet are grounded in peace, your faith is lifted as a shield, your sword is sharpened with the Word, and your heart and mind are guarded by righteousness and salvation. Therefore, stand firm in the victory Christ has already won.

“For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds.” - 2 Corinthians 10:4

The battlefield may rage around you, but when the armor is on, God reigns within you. Stand firm, Soldier of Christ. You are fully equipped and fully empowered to overcome.

“Thanks be to God, who gives us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.” - 1 Corinthians 15:57
