My husband brought up something the other night that to me, gave another perspective on: we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence…
Hebrews 12:9-10 Furthermore we have had fathers of our flesh which corrected us, and we gave them reverence: shall we not much rather be in subjection unto the Father of spirits, and live? [10] For they verily for a few days chastened us after their own pleasure; but he for our profit, that we might be partakers of his holiness.
I’ve only viewed this as fathers in the home which …I’ve had several one who I thought was my real father but turned out to not be, a step-father who loved to get drunk and slur old gospel hymns while strumming his guitar, and a father I never met which turned out to be my real biological father.
But I had never considered “fathers” ..”kings over the gentiles” with “benefactors” after the flesh. Luke 22:24-27 And there was also a strife among them, which of them should be accounted the greatest. [25] And he said unto them, The kings of the Gentiles exercise lordship over them; and they that exercise authority upon them are called benefactors. [26] But you shall not be so: but he that is greatest among you, let him be as the younger; and he that is chief, as he that does serve. [27] For whether is greater, he that sits at meat, or he that serves? is not he that sits at meat? but I am among you as he that serves.
1 Peter 1:13-21 Therefore, preparing your minds for action, and being sober-minded, set your hope fully on the grace that will be brought to you at the revelation of Jesus Christ. [14] As obedient children, do not be conformed to the passions of your former ignorance, [15] but as he who called you is holy, you also be holy in all your conduct, [16] since it is written, "You shall be holy, for I am holy." [17] And if you call on him as Father who judges impartially according to each one's deeds, conduct yourselves with fear throughout the time of your exile, [18] knowing that you were ransomed from the futile ways inherited from your forefathers, not with perishable things such as silver or gold, [19] but with the precious blood of Christ, like that of a lamb without blemish or spot. [20] He was foreknown before the foundation of the world but was made manifest in the last times for the sake of you [21] who through him are believers in God, who raised him from the dead and gave him glory, so that your faith and hope are in God.
Only sharing another perspective to we have had “earthly” “fathers” after the flesh…who corrected us …chastening us after their own pleasure…by God for our profit.
Romans 13:1-8 Let every soul be subject unto the higher powers. For there is no power but of God: the powers that be are ordained of God. [2] Whosoever therefore resists the power, resists the ordinance of God: and they that resist shall receive to themselves damnation. [3] For rulers are not a terror to good works, but to the evil. Wilt thou then not be afraid of the power? do that which is good, and you shall have praise of the same: [4] For he is the minister of God to thee for good. But if thou do that which is evil, be afraid; for he bears not the sword in vain: for he is the minister of God, a revenger to execute wrath upon him that does evil. [5] Wherefore you must be subject, not only for wrath, but also for conscience sake. [6] For for this cause pay you tribute also: for they are God's ministers, (the bad and the good? Having had “fathers” after the flesh, correcting after their own pleasure?) attending continually upon this very thing. [7] Render therefore to all their dues: tribute to whom tribute is due; custom to whom custom; fear to whom fear; honour to whom honour. [8] Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loves another has fulfilled the law.
