'Father, forgive them, for they don't know what they are doing!'
Gods loving lindness (Grace) to whom He has choosen. In this passage I believe Jesus was forgiving those who were doing the deed of hanging Him on the cross. It also could imply to those around him as he hung there on the cross. This is what Jesus CAME TO DO. To obey the will of His Father, and that punishment was going to be done through the hands of Man. Therefore, Jesus out of His love and justice, would not hold them to the thing in which He came to do.
