Can somebody who follows Jesus teaching on the basis of another Christian's testimony/doctrine; believing they are been taught the correct theology by the leader of a church who was in serious error all along, cause themselves to perish without even being aware they are perishing?

Look at what the Bereans did.

People who blindly follow even the best of leaders too closely without exception could be heading for trouble:

"Let them alone: they be blind leaders of the blind. And if the blind lead the blind, both shall fall into the ditch." Matt 15:14

People perish for lack of vision...

"Where there is no vision, the people perish:.." Prov 29:18

"I counsel thee to buy of me gold tried in the fire, that thou mayest be rich; and white raiment, that thou mayest be clothed, and that the shame of thy nakedness do not appear; and anoint thine eyes with eyesalve, that thou mayest see." Rev 3:18

"Blessed are they which do hunger and thirst after righteousness: for they shall be filled." Matt 5:6

I do not know anything about the Bereans.
"And the brethren immediately sent away Paul and Silas by night unto Berea: who coming thither went into the synagogue of the Jews.
These were more noble than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness of mind, and searched the scriptures daily, whether those things were so.
Therefore many of them believed; also of honourable women which were Greeks, and of men, not a few." Acts 17:10-12

You have jumbled together a number of different issues.

1. What is sound doctrine? It is Bible truth based solely on the Bible. The Bible interprets itself.

2. Should Christians follow the teachings of men? No. They can certainly examine what men are teaching, but check them against Scripture. If the teaching is sound accept it. If not, reject it.

3. Are there serious errors all around us? Absolutely. So how would you distinguish truth from error unless you first put in the time and effort to study the Bible, then attend a church which is committed to sound doctrine, then focus on what is being preached and whether or not it matches their Statement of Faith.

4. Is every person responsible for his or her own spiritual welfare? Absolutely. God has given the Bible to all mankind and even older children can read and understand what is contained therein. Plus today the Bible is available at no cost on the Internet in just about any language. This does not mean that people do not need the ministry of evangelists, pastors, and teachers. However it does mean that what is plainly revealed can be understood with God's help. All you have to do is ask God to help you.

Do you think that people who are in theological error know they are? Who can correct the teacher if the teacher mistakenly believes they are sound in their scriptural understanding?

Did the teachers of Jesus time accept what he said, and did they change their religiosity for the sake of his gospel, but most walked away from Jesus finding his teachings hard to swallow.

If you are searching diligently for truth, and walk in front of a bus whilst doing so, God is not going to condemn you because you hadn't a perfect understanding of theology. Which brings me to ask a question... Does anybody have a perfect understanding of theology?
The thing is bro, we aren't saved or lost on the basis of sound or unsounded doctrine... We are saved by faith. But our faith must be in something real, tangible, and truthful. You will not be saved of your faith is in a block of wood.
So while you are searching, take care that you don't settle and think you've arrived. Your faith could turn out to be in a false concept or a false gospel. Stay open to the holy Spirit to lead you into more truth. And the moment you discover that you are wrong, change your mind...or that your pastor, priest, or Bible teacher is wrong, show him his error, and if he doesn't agree and cannot offer a biblical defense for his belief... Go somewhere else. And as enoch777 said, the Bible and the Bible only is the only reliable foundation for truth.

All the more reason for you to pay attention to what Jesus and His apostles actually taught and said.

How is the Bible the only foundation for truth?

The Bible has sufficient to lead anyone to Christ. It's simple truths provide all that is required for even a child to understand all that is necessary for salvation.

I could sit for hours detailing all the doctrines and dogmas and superstitions held by people that have no basis in scripture. But I won't be. Just cleave to scripture and you won't have any issues m
