Yes, I think it was Jesus' intention to show that he had come not to bring his Kingdom immediately, but rather, to die and to so delay the coming of his Kingdom. Therefore, the sign of his Coming was something that would disappoint in his generation.
The actual sign of his coming with the Kingdom would not be associated with all of the false earthly Kingdoms that precede the coming of the Kingdom of God. Israel had presented itself as worthy of God's Kingdom at a time when it was steeped in idolatry, and false prophets had denied the true Prophets their condemnation of Israel and the judgment of that nation that they foretold.
In the same way Jesus predicted the rise of false prophets and false Christs who would try to proclaim Israel and other nations pretenders of God's Kingdom, doomed to failure. The sign of the coming of the true Kingdom would be the revelation of Messiah from heaven, with the specific intent of destroying all of those false earthly Kingdoms, filled with sin, so that God's true righteousness can be revealed throughout the earth.
It was written in Dan 7 that the Son of Man would appear from heaven, after the council of heaven, determining that the kingdoms of this world should be judged and eternally destroyed. This is the true sign of Christ's coming, that the Antichrist will be destroyed, along with all those who choose to serve him.
