2 Peter 3:10-12
10 But the day of the Lord will come as a thief in the night; in the which the heavens shall pass away with a great noise, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat, the earth also and the works that are therein shall be burned up.
11 Seeing then that all these things shall be dissolved, what manner of persons ought ye to be in all holy conversation and godliness,
12 Looking for and hasting unto the coming of the day of God, wherein the heavens being on fire shall be dissolved, and the elements shall melt with fervent heat?
KJV
That "day of the LORD" is a subject mentioned in God's Old Testament prophets too. It can be confusing when reading about it in the OT prophets, because it is mixed in with history.
For example, in Jeremiah 46 the "day of the Lord" is mentioned along with events of destruction upon Egypt and Ethiopia and Libya by the historical king of Babylon, Nebuchadnezzar. So Preterists who like to think the "day of the Lord" is just a simple phrase to show God's destruction at 'various'... times, like to think that Jeremiah 46 example was history. That destruction by the king of Babylon was history, but not the real "day of the Lord" events reserved for the LAST DAY of this world when God pours out His cup of wrath when Jesus returns. Thus the Jeremiah 46 event was an "ensample" (1 Corinthians 10), and that means an 'partial' example of what God is going to do on the final day of this of world.'
In 1 Thessalonians 5:1-3, Apostle Paul also showed this distinction between that "day of the Lord" phrase that is to come "as a thief in the night" at the end of this world. Paul contrasted it with the "sudden destruction" from the Old Testament prophets that will come upon those at the end who will be saying, "Peace and safety", thinking Messiah has come during the future "great tribulation". But that first one coming claiming to be Messiah will be a fake using peace to destroy many per the Daniel 8 and Revelation 13 prophecy about the Antichrist.
So beware brethren, of those who try to play the Preterist doctrines of men on you in fooling you into thinking that "day of the Lord" phrase means some other timing than Jesus' future 2nd coming with God's cup of wrath poured out on that day. Even some folks on the false Pre-trib Rapture theory like for you to think that "day of the Lord" is about the "great tribulation" time. It's not, it's about the final day of this world when Jesus comes.
