Matthew 18:15-20, verse 20, there is a kind of church meeting where nobody feels victorious, someone has sinned, someone has been wounded, the private conversation happened and failed, witnesses came and listened, the church prayed. A decision had to be made, maybe the person still refused repentance or maybe repentance finally came, but the damage is real and healing will take time, no one should enjoy that moment. But Jesus says, he is there, that is comfort for the wounded believer who feared no one would tell the truth. It is comfort for the one who confronted privately when gossip would have been easier.
It is comfort for leaders who would rather avoid the pain, but cannot pretend sin is harmless. It is comfort for a church that wants to be gentle without becoming cowardly and truthful without becoming cruel and it is a warning, because if Jesus is there, his presence does not sanctify harshness, it exposes it. Jesus’ presence does not bless cover-ups, it confronts them, his presence does not excuse favoritism, manipulation or spiritual control, it brings the matter under the eyes of the King. Paul uses similar language in a discipline context in 1 Corinthians 5:4, speaking of the church gathered in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that situation in Corinth was severe and Paul commands action.
But later, in 2 Corinthians 2:6-8, Paul urges the church to reaffirm love toward a disciplined person who appears to be in danger of being overwhelmed by sorrow. That balance is not optional, the same New Testament that commands discipline also commands gentleness, Galatians 6:1, restore, not crush, in a spirit of gentleness, not superiority, Christ’s presence comforts the obedient and warns the careless. Today, conflict does not need a public meeting to become public, it only needs a screen, a woman sits in her car after church typing words she knows will gather sympathy. A man forwards a message with one sentence, I just thought you should know. A small group begins to fracture, because everyone is discussing the person who is not in the room.
A leader delays action, because the situation is complicated and the person involved is influential. A wounded believer is told to keep unity when what they really need is protection and truth. Matthew 18:20 interrupts all of it, it interrupts the offended person who wants exposure before obedience. It interrupts the leader who wants order more than truth. It interrupts the church that confuses niceness with love. It interrupts the believer who confuses anger with righteousness. It interrupts the group that thinks agreement means everyone on our side saying the same thing. Jesus gives a better way, restoration before rejection, truth before accusation, privacy before publicity, witnesses before judgment, humility before confrontation, accountability before authority, prayer before action and the name of Jesus over all of it.
