The inquiry at hand is about the identity of the Word of God, the Word of Life.
Let's look in the 1 Epistle of John at the first three verses, and see what can be learned.
John writing to the believers in his day in age saying;
One may ask the question, what was from the beginning, which the apostles had heard, and had seen with their eyes, and had looked upon, and that their hands had handled, of the Word of life?
Was it not the fleshly body of the Lord Jesus Christ, that Apostles had traveled around with for the past three years, until his death on the cross, being buried for three days in which some of the Apostles were going to go on back to fishing again (John 21:3-4); until they realized that Jesus had visited to them which they had journeyed back to Jerusalem and stayed with the resurrected Jesus Christ whom God had raised from the dead by the Holy Spirit of God (Romans 6:10-11).
I believe that from the context of scripture, that Jesus spoke spirit and life (John 6:63), so he can be seen as the Word of life.
What does that mean about that which was from the beginning?
In Genesis 1:1 Moses writes the very first verse saying In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth, 1:2 Now the earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was hovering over the waters. 1:3 And God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.
You can see here, that when God had created the heavens and the earth; before the earth was even formed, and around it was empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep (perhaps earth was just simply all water), and the Holy Spirit of God was hovering over the waters.
Then God said, Let there be light, and there was light. So what is interesting about this? Think about this for a moment. When you speak to another person, you speak words to them. These words can be used to create stories, and tell stories about ones life and experience, those words are part of your own individual heart. When God spoke, the Word which came from God created. Did you know that before?
Let's look at another one perspective of John, by going to the Gospel of John and reading a few verses from there.
In the Gospel of John, the writer who spent his life with the apostles and the Lord Jesus Christ for three years, and continued to have faith after his resurrection wrote, in John 1 saying.
Do you see how in the Beginning with God, was the Word that was with God in which through that word God spoke; God allowed the Word to create what was on the Fathers heart, which of course is always for a function and purpose to look towards the one whom created all things, in which you now obtain access to the Father, through the Word; that became the Lord Jesus Christ.
You can see here that from the beginning, until the moment the the Word has been sent by God, became flesh leaving behind the former residence that was in the beginning now having become a man, a man whom is name is Jesus, but also Immanuel.
In the Gospel of Matthew, you can see here that when Mary would conceive, She would give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel, which means 'God is with us', or 'God with us'.
How can that be if the Word now had became flesh, be called by a second name that means God with us? It was because the Father was able to help the Lord Jesus Christ, by and through the Holy Spirit of God, in which lead to Jesus by the fleshly nature to overcome sin, and temptation from Satan, and to even face the cross denying himself to allow himself to continue to live and decided to die for all of mankind so that all would be able to have access to the Father, by and through the Spirit in the same way now today in which God writes on the hearts and minds of those whom are his (Hebrews 10:16).
Therefore Jesus Christ, was the Word of God, and the Word of God was the soul of Jesus in a sense, which that soul was from God, and that soul always thought about the Fathers will, and the Word of God wouldn't let the Lord Jesus Christ by the flesh be overcome with evil; because that body was going to be a sacrifice for all sins (1 John 2:2).
Lastly, Jesus was the very expressed image of God because of the soul with-in the body of the Lord which was the Word of God who was with God in the beginning.
John goes on in his first epistle saying (For the life was manifested and we have seen it, and bear witness, and show unto you that eternal life, which was with the Father, was manifested unto us. Speaking of Jesus Christ whom had the words of eternal life (John 6:68).
Paul explains the makeup of Christ by the spiritual sense of being the Word of God, God with them, God with us, Immanuel. The Lord Jesus, because of the Word of God, made himself nothing, by taking the very nature of a servant, being made in now human likeness. Being found in the appearance as a man, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to death, even death on a cross!
Because of these things, and the Love of the Lord Jesus Christ for his Father, and for others. God exalted him to the highest place and give him the name that is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue acknowledge that Jesus Christ is the Lord to the glory of God the Father.
John writes onward here in his first epistle in verse 3 That which we have seen and heard declare we unto you, that that you also may have fellowship with us: and truly our fellowship with with the Father, and with his Son Jesus Christ.

John writes in John 1:14 saying The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.
You can see here that from the beginning, until the moment the the Word has been sent by God, became flesh leaving behind the former residence that was in the beginning now having become a man, a man whom is name is Jesus, but also Immanuel.

Philippians 2:
6 Who, being in very nature[a] God,
did not consider equality with God something to be used to his own advantage;
7 rather, he made himself nothing
by taking the very nature[b] of a servant,
being made in human likeness.
8 And being found in appearance as a man,
he humbled himself
by becoming obedient to death—
even death on a cross!
9 Therefore God exalted him to the highest place
and gave him the name that is above every name,
10 that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow,
