Who were the sons of God mentioned in Genesis 6?
Genesis 6:1-3 (KJV)
[sup]1 [/sup]And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,
[sup]2 [/sup]That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
[sup]3 [/sup]And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
In order to get a better understanding of who these sons of God were we need to go to Genesis 4:26 and it says, And to Seth, to him also there was born a son; and he called his name Enos: then began men to call upon the name of the LORD. (KJV)
Two quotes from Adam Clark
Then began men to call upon the name of the Lord—The marginal reading is, Then began men to call themselves by the name of the Lord;
— Adam Clarke's Commentary
It must not be dissembled that many eminent men have contended that ‏הוחל‎ huchal, which we translate began, should be rendered began profanely, or then profanation began,
— Adam Clarke's Commentary
In other words, wicked men began to call themselves sons of God. They profaned God's name by calling themselves sons of God while still being wicked.
These are the same men that the Bible mentioned in Genesis 6:1-3 as the sons of God.
They were wicked or sinful men that knew that God created their parents, Adam and Eve. They no doubt knew what happened to them (stories handed down to them from Adam and so on), and that they were driven from the Garden and cut off from God.
So they thought that by calling themselves sons of God they would get special favor with God, though they still practice and lived in sin, as it says in Genesis 6:5 (KJV)
[sup]5 [/sup]And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
Notice that it says “the wickedness of man was great…..” It does not say the wickedness of angles or demons…….man was wicked. These men that called themselves by God’s name were wicked in every way.
The word man in verse 5 Genesis 6 is translated from the Hebrew word אָדָם‎ = aw-dawm', and means ʾādām. These men were sons of Adam/human beings. Besides for the fact that it is utterly impossible for demons or angels to have sexual intercourse, if fallen angels were these men’s father they would not be called ʾādām because Adam would not be there father….there lineage would be traced to another. Another reason why it would not be possible is that God would not allow it, for it would be a violation of what God said. God said that man(kind) is to dominate the Earth not spirit/angels or demons……they have no authority on the Earth over man. Even God Himself when He has something to say or wants to do something does it through man….including when He hinted that a Savior for mankind would come, and is mentioned in Genesis 3:15. A descendant of Eve would come and crush the head of Satan…..that man was the Godman Jesus.
In Genesis 6:4 (KJV) mighty men translated from the Hebrew ‏גִּבּוֹר‎ = gibbôr and means hero.
From the Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament
1393 ‏נפל‎ (npl) II. Assumed root of the following.
1393a †‏נְפִילִים‎ (nepîlîm) <H5303> giants, the Nephilim (Genesis 6:4; Numbers 13:33, only).
While some scholars attempt to relate this term etymologically to nāpal I via the noun nēpel "untimely birth" or "miscarriage" (as productive of superhuman monstrosities), a more likely reconstruction is the proposal of a root nāpal II, akin to other weak verbs, pûl II "be wonderful, strong, mighty," pālāʾ "be wonderful," and even pālâ "separate, distinguish," pālal "discriminate." This pattern of semantically related groups of weak verbs with two strong consonants in common is a notably recurrent phenomenon in Hebrew lexicography. Actually, the translation "giants" is supported mainly by the LXX and may be quite misleading. The word may be of unknown origin and mean "heroes" or "fierce warriors" etc. The RSV and NIV transliteration "Nephilim" is safer and may be correct in referring the noun to a race or nation.
— Theological Wordbook of the Old Testament
Genesis 6:4 (KJV)
[sup]4 [/sup]There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.
Hero
Usage Number: 1
Part Of Speech: Noun
Strong's Number: <H1368>
Original Word: ‏גִּבּוֹר‎, gibbôr
Usage Notes: "hero." This word appears 159 times in the Old Testament. The first occurrence of gibbôr is in Gen. 6:4: "There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown."
In the context of battle, the word is better understood to refer to the category of warriors. The gibbôr is the proven warrior; especially is this true when gibbôr is used in combination with ḥayil ("strength"). The kjv gives a literal translation, "mighty men [gibbôr] of valor [ḥayil]," whereas the niv renders the phrase idiomatically, "fighting men" (cf. Josh. 1:14). David, who had proven himself as a warrior, attracted "heroes" to his band while he was being pursued by Saul (2 Sam. 23). When David was enthroned as king, these men became a part of the elite military corps. The phrase gibbôr ḥayil may also refer to a man of a high social class, the landed man who had military responsibilities. Saul came from such a family (1 Sam. 9:1); so also Jeroboam (1 Kings 11:28). The king symbolized the strength of his kingdom. He had to lead his troops in battle, and as commander he was expected to be a "hero." Early in David's life, he was recognized as a "hero" (1 Sam. 18:7). The king is described as a "hero": "Gird thy sword upon thy thigh, O most Mighty, with thy glory and thy majesty" (Psa. 45:3). The messianic expectation included the hope that the Messiah would be "mighty": "For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder; and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counselor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace" (Isa. 9:6).
— Vine's Expository Dictionary of Old and New Testament Words
And finaly; here’s another proof from the scriptures that spirit and human beings cannot mix/produce offspring.
Daniel 2:43 (ASV)
[sup]43 [/sup]And whereas thou sawest the iron mixed with miry clay, they shall mingle themselves with the seed of men; but they shall not cleave one to another, even as iron doth not mingle with clay.
Daniel was inspired and prophesied of the last world ruling Empire (the Roman Empire) before the return of Jesus, in which something not human will possess or try to join with the leaders (seed of men): those that orchestrate that system. They will not be able to mix the same way iron and clay cannot mix.
So we can see that not only is it impossible for demons or fallen angels to produce offspring with human beings, but also God would not allow it.

Descendants of Seth married the descendants of Cain.

Gen Chapter 6 outlines the moral and political deterioration prior to the Flood. The world became noted for ruthless indifference to the requirements of others, widespread corruption of God's ways, and universal violence. The majority of the sons of God succumbed to this evil environment, but Noah and his family retained their integrity before God. Three Divine inspections were made of the world (See Gen 6:3,7,13) followed by three warnings of coming judgment. The final one proclaimed that the end had come, and Noah was told to make preparation for the deluge that followed. The Flood is the third of the four outstanding events of primeval history recorded in Genesis. It brought judgment upon the world of the ungodly, though a righteous remnant was preserved there from. This discrimination proclaimed the “goodness and the severity of God" which epitomises the character of Yahweh (Rom. 11:22; Exod. 34:5,6,7). Other O.T. references to the Flood are found in Job 22:15,16,17; Psalm 29:10; Isaiah 54:9.

The world had reached a state of absolute anarchy. Filled with violence it reflected the attitude of Cain and rejected the divine appeal that had been constantly pre sealed by those of faith. But for the moment the ''seed of the serpent" was to be victorious; it was to crush the principle of righteousness in an orgy of fleshly desire.

But ultimately the world was cleansed of such sin by a universal baptism.

My op have made it clear that the sons of God were not fallen angels but neither were they people who were filled with God's spirit as Noah and other men of God were. And by the way, the world is now in the same state as it was when God decided to bring the flood on the Earth.

Your OP is wrong per God's Word. Per the Hebrew word 'chaalal' (for "began) in Gen.4:26, it is pointing to the idea of 'profaning' the calling upon The Lord's Name. It's easy to go into error with depending upon just one Bible commentator, i.e., like Adam Clarke. That profaning certainly could contribute to the wickedness of the times, but not an excuse to re-write what happened with the Gen.6:1-4 event...

Gen 6:1-9
1 And it came to pass, when men began to multiply on the face of the earth, and daughters were born unto them,
2 That the sons of God saw the daughters of men that they were fair; and they took them wives of all which they chose.
3 And the LORD said, My spirit shall not always strive with man, for that he also is flesh: yet his days shall be an hundred and twenty years.
4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

The "sons of God" is an expression for the "sons of God" which appeared before God's Throne in the Book of Job. Satan appeared along with them in the heavenly as written. That expression is only used later about those in Christ Jesus, and it is still about the heavenly state of redemption AFTER Christ's future return and the resurrection.

They were "men of renown", meaning 'men of the name, or legend'. What legend? Legends of ancient mythology.

The giant hybrids existed in Noah's days, "and also after that", which means there was a second irruption of the angels mating with the flesh daughters of men after... the flood. The second influx of the giant hybrids are those which God told Israel to destroy off the earth. The mixing was Satan's attempt to destroy the Seed of the Woman that Christ Jesus would be born through, trying to prevent Christ's later birth by tainting the physical seed of Adam.

In Jude 1 we're reminded of angels that kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, going after strange flesh. That the giants were a real hybrid race is repeatedly revealed with their non-human great physical stature and attributes, the measurements in cubits of king Og's bedsted even given to point to their great abnormal size (13' x 9' per Deut.3). Goliath the giant, had a staff as huge as a weaver's beam per 1 Sam.17, as did his brother who was of the giant, and another from Gath that had six fingers on each hand, and six toes on each foot (2 Sam.21).

5 And GOD saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination of the thoughts of his heart was only evil continually.
6 And it repented the LORD that he had made man on the earth, and it grieved Him at His heart.
7 And the LORD said, I will destroy man whom I have created from the face of the earth; both man, and beast, and the creeping thing, and the fowls of the air; for it repenteth Me that I have made them.
8 But Noah found grace in the eyes of the LORD.
9 These are the generations of Noah: Noah was a just man and perfect in his generations, and Noah walked with God.
(KJV)

The influx of the rebellious angels with the flesh daughters of men struck an imbalance in God's Salvation Plan. No doubt the reason the many ancient mythologies recorded in many histories of the ancient nations was because of the giant hybrids physical attributes and power-imbalance upon the earth. Many worshipped those giants as 'gods'.

When God says in verse 9 that Noah was "perfect in his generation", that is about BLOODLINE PURITY, because the Hebrew word for "perfect" is the same Hebrew word used for the umblemished sacrificial purity of animals that Israel was required to use for sacrifice. In the Hebrew, it was definite that Noah had not MIXED his bloodline with those hybrids. The Ethiopic version of the book of Enoch reveals also this Gen.6 event involved literal angels taking wives of the flesh daughters of men, and a hybrid giant race being the offspring result.

Moreover, NOWHERE in God's Word is there any such proof that 'wickedness' is strictly the RESULT of a flesh couple mating. The Gen.6:4 verse is SOLID that the event of 'mating' to produce those "giants" (Nephilim - fallen ones) is what resulted in the wickedness of Noah's days...

4 There were giants in the earth in those days; and also after that, when the sons of God came in unto the daughters of men, and they bare children to them, the same became mighty men which were of old, men of renown.

And just what are Satan's hosts today trying to do with genetics and mixing of seed? Per a Worldnetdaily news article, they are actually studying the joining of human biological traits mixed with animal biological traits!! As our Lord Jesus said, the last days will be like the days of Noe (Noah).

You see you assume that just because the world sons of God is used that it MUST be referring to spirits. Spirits are spirits and are not flesh and blood. So therefore they are not made up of cells, muscles, tissues and have genes and sperm to impregnate a woman. They do not have bodies or else they would not be called spirit. And Jesus already told us what people would be doing just as they did in the days of Noah.........they would be eating, drinking and being given in marriage.....nothing about genetic engineering, which the people in the time of Noah were not doing.

I believe the sons of God were clearly fallen angels. Their human-angelic hybrids were the Nephilim. Nothing else satisfies (at least to me) the countless legends of Titans, ancient gods, and later poltergeists hanging around teenage girls (sound like Genesis 6?), mythical creatures, aliens doing "reproductive experiments" and so forth. When we look at it from the perspective of fallen angles trying to start their own race, we can see the same theme as the new age "star children" ideas and I fail to see where mankind would otherwise just dream all this up with such remarkable unity of thought and the same detail.

As Jesus said, angels are not supposed to marry or be given in marriage. As a matter of fact, this was a quote from Enoch who, by the request of the fallen angels, was supposed to interceded for them. He told them that they were not supposed to marry, but left their estate and did a wicked thing by breeding with human women. God then told Enoch he was not to interceded for them as they were so wicked.

If we want to believe the "sons of Seth" and "daughters of Cain" explanation (or something similar), then so be it. But then all these myths, legends and stories with such a common universal theme of "outside visitors" then goes unexplained when the answer is right under our noses in Genesis 6. I know the truth is hard to accept sometimes, but for the sake of pride (or fear) I rather not invent explanations and then sweep the vast amounts of "visitor" evidence from space under the rug. I consider myself open-minded, and to deny such a truth for the sake of a more so-called reasonable sounding dogma, and then going around being stupid about the visitors at the very least is embarrassing to me.

What would be the purpose for God giving angles the ability of procreate if they as Jesus said do not marry or given in marriage?

Buzz,

Watch the dogmatists work their magic potions conjuring up all manner evil concoctions of spirit & angels. Watch the creeds of the magicians, astrologers, sorcerers and Chaldeans of the ancient oriental world flow out onto this thread when in fact the text is very easily understood.

Line of Cain:

Cain — Demanding
Enoch — Dedicated (false religion established)
Irad — Wild Ass (self-will asserted)
Mehujael — Smitten of God (self-centred)
Methusael — Man of God (Apostate priesthood)
Lamech — Reducer (Boastful arrogance)
Jabal, Jubal, Tubal-Cain, Naamah (Commerce), (Pleasure), (Military Permissiveness), (Prowess)

The "way of Cain" introduced city life (Gen. 4:17); false religion (Gen 4:17,18); polygamy or permissiveness (Gen 4:19); commercial cartels, sophisticated pleasure, metal-working for war (Gen4:20-22); personal vengeance, or the spirit of revenge (Gen 4:24), women's liberation movement (Gen 4:22), leading to the corrupt and violent condition of things on the eve of the Flood. It all stemmed from clever but fleshly organization ungoverned by Divine Law.

Line of Seth:

Abel-Seth — Self-effacing
Enos — Weak
Cainan — Gain
Mahalaleel — Praise of El
Jared — Decline
Enoch — Dedicated
Methuselah — When he dieth it shall come
Lamech — Reduced

Sons of God:

This is the first time this phrase is used, but by no means the last. Israel constituted a "son of God" even Yahweh's "firstborn" (Exod.4:22-23; Deut. 14:1; Hos. 1:10; Isa. 43:6-7) and He is their Father (Psa. 103:13; Isa. 63:16; 64:8; Mal. 1:6). The same relationship subsists today between those who embrace the Truth in Christ and the Father in heaven (1 John 3:1-2). The sons of God in antediluvian times, therefore, constituted the seed of the woman, being mortal believers of the Truth.

Ah the enmity must be maintained for your protection. Gen 3:15

Besides bible study and prophecy, my interests include mathematics, astronomy, genealogy and I am also a Gnomonist.

Maybe some of the latter has crept in unawares

The same relationship subsists today between those who embrace the Truth in Christ and the Father in heaven (1 John 3:1-2). The sons of God in antediluvian times, therefore, constituted the seed of the woman, being mortal believers of the Truth.

Ah the enmity must be maintained for your protection. Gen 3:15

The idea that spirit would even have the desire for women is silly at best not to mention impossible. Spirits are neither male or female because they are just that...spirit. An angel and a demon is a being without a body and a human being is a being with a body or one could say a spirit with a body.

What would be the purpose for God giving angles the ability of procreate if they as Jesus said do not marry or given in marriage?

Jesus' statement meant that they were not supposed to procreate and one cannot logically deduce that such a statement in and of itself automatically means they can't procreate.

All you have done is dodged my question. One more time: If they are not supposed to then what would be the purpose for God giving them the ability to procreate? And are you trying to say that there are male and female angles and demons?

Jesus never said they are not supposed to.......He said they do not, which is a different thing entirely.

I don't know. OK? That does not change the situation.

Did you even read my earlier post about Enoch and Jesus quoting him? I thought not. Don't even bother. You already have your mind made up.

But if you ever have a person possessed or haunted by these things, do yourself a favor and don't cast him out in Jesus name, as you don't have a handle on the occult. These things prey on the ignorance that people have about these things and want you to believe they are not what they are. Hate to see a similar situation happen like in Acts 19:15-16. I have a little more respect for their power and don't attribute what once happened in Genesis as merely good boys messing with bad girls (or whatever).

Besides bible study and prophecy, my interests include mathematics, astronomy, genealogy and I am also a Gnomonist.

Maybe some of the latter has crept in unawares

Since you mentioned my signature, I'm just curious what in my signature has "crept in unawares" into my theology?

That's because it would not make sense to give someone the ability to do something then turn around and tell them not to. God is not a God that gives you something then tell you not to use it.....He is not an illogical being. Search the scriptures and you will see.

It does not change the situation because it is what it is but that does not mean that you are claiming is the situation.

My mind is made up based of careful study of the scriptures and not just on one taken out of context.

I don't know what does that have to do with what I am talking,so could you explain? I don't fear or respect anything that a demon can do. And evil spirits are not limited to the occult...... Satan is the god of this world and has deceived the whole world, as the Bible tells us.

Your willingness to entertain the idea reveals your immaturity in the Word. Try entering the Word, actually opening it to reveal light; allow it to speak to you rather than forcing your mystical ideas upon it.

Then you will “know” truth.

I believe the sons of God were clearly fallen angels.

Book, Chapter and Verse please.

Their human-angelic hybrids were the Nephilim.

Book, Chapter and Verse please.

Cannot ask for Bible quotes this falls outside the realm of what’s real, maybe some Spielberg quotes might suffice -

Book, Chapter and Verse please.

If we want to believe the "sons of Seth" and "daughters of Cain" explanation (or something similar), then so be it.

You discard contextual truth so quickly

But then all these myths, legends and stories with such a common universal theme of "outside visitors" then goes unexplained when the answer is right under our noses in Genesis 6. I know the truth is hard to accept sometimes, but for the sake of pride (or fear) I rather not invent explanations and then sweep the vast amounts of "visitor" evidence from space under the rug. I consider myself open-minded, and to deny such a truth for the sake of a more so-called reasonable sounding dogma, and then going around being stupid about the visitors at the very least is embarrassing to me.

Tim I suggest you narrow your mind a little and direct it into the living Word. A deeper more profound message in being taught in Gen 6 which is presently lost on your alien theology.

Sufficient Scriptural evidence has been provided by Buzz & myself to keep you busy for a little while.

Gently Reproof given in the spirit of 2 Tim 3:16; Lev 19:17; Luke 17:3; Matt 18:15...

Buzz,

Watch the dogmatists work their magic potions conjuring up all manner evil concoctions of spirit & angels. Watch the creeds of the magicians, astrologers, sorcerers and Chaldeans of the ancient oriental world flow out onto this thread when in fact the text is very easily understood.

You equate the Bible subject of the fallen angels taking wives of the flesh daughters of men to produce a 'giant' hybrid race as originating from pagan doctrine??? And that this is dogmatism???

1 Cor 11:10
10 For this cause ought the woman to have power on her head because of the angels.
(KJV)

Trying to associate the Truth of that event about fallen angels mating with flesh women as a pagan doctrine is really ignorant thinking!

But what does 1 Cor 11:10 have to do with the OP though.
