    ALLEGIANCE TO GOD

    AUTHORITY IN THE BIBLE

    GOD

    |

    JESUS

    |

    APOSTLES

    |

    BIBLE

(Apostles wrote Bible by Holy Spirit)

    GOD HAS INHERENT AUTHORITY

    • Let’s start at the beginning, If you look at Genesis 1:1 In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth. and Psalms 24:1: The earth is the Lord’s, and everything in it, the world, and all who live in it;

    • Who do you see here as the “owner”? GOD has ALL AUTHORITY! He has made it all, He owns everything.

God delegated AUTHORITY to His Son, Jesus Christ

John 14:6 Jesus answered, "I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.

Matthew 28:18 Then Jesus came to them and said, "All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me.

Jesus delegated AUTHORITY to His apostles:

John 13:20 I tell you the truth, whoever accepts anyone I send accepts me; and whoever accepts me accepts the one who sent me." (Jesus here, is talking about the one’s He sent, His apostles)

John 20:21 Jesus said, "Peace be with you! As the Father has sent me, I am sending you.“ (apostles)

The Holy Spirit guided the Apostles

Again, Jesus was talking to His apostles and said:

John 14:26 But the Counselor, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in my name, will teach you all things and will remind you of everything I have said to you.

John 16:12-15 I have much more to say to you, more than you can now bear. But when he, the Spirit of truth, comes, he will guide you into all truth. He will
not speak on his own; he will speak only what he hears, and he will tell you what is yet to come.

    • 14 He will bring glory to me by taking from what is mine and making it known to you. 15 All that belongs to the Father is mine. That is why I said the Spirit will take from what is mine and make it known to you.

1 Corinthians 2:10-13 10 but God has revealed it to us by his Spirit. The Spirit searches all things, even the deep things of God. 11 For who among men knows the thoughts of a man except the man's spirit within him? In the same way no one knows the thoughts of God except the Spirit of God

12 We have not received the spirit of the world but the Spirit who is from God, that we may understand what God has freely given us.

13 This is what we speak, not in words taught us by human wisdom but in words taught by the Spirit, expressing spiritual truths in spiritual words.

    The apostles wrote the Bible:
    (by the Spirit of God)

Ephesians 3:1-5 For this reason I, Paul, the prisoner of Christ Jesus for the sake of you Gentiles-- Surely you have heard about the administration of God's grace that was given to me for you, that is, the mystery made known to me by revelation, as I have already written briefly. In reading this, then, you will be able to understand my insight into the mystery of Christ, which was not made known to men in other generations as it has now been revealed by the Spirit to God's holy apostles and prophets.

We are not to “add to” nor “take away” from the written Word:

Revelation 22:18-19 I warn everyone who hears the words of the prophecy of this book: If anyone adds anything to them, God will add to him the plagues described in this book. And if anyone takes words away from this book of prophecy, God will take away from him his share in the tree of life and in the holy city, which are described in this book.

Galatians 1:8-9 8 But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach a gospel other than the one we preached to you, let him be eternally condemned! 9 As we have already said, so now I say again: If anybody is preaching to you a gospel other than what you accepted, let him be eternally condemned!

1 Corinthians 4:6 6 Now, brothers, I have applied these things to myself and Apollos for your benefit, so that you may learn from us the meaning of the saying, "Do not go beyond what is written." Then you will not take pride in one man over against another

In the Bible, God has told us “everything He is going to tell us”!:

Faith - Galatians 1:11-24 11 I want you to know, brothers, that the gospel I preached is not something that man made up. 12 I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it; rather, I received it by revelation from Jesus Christ. 13 For you have heard of my previous way of life in Judaism, how intensely I persecuted the church of God and tried to destroy it.

    • . 14 I was advancing in Judaism beyond many Jews of my own age and was extremely zealous for the traditions of my fathers. 15 But when God, who set me apart from birth {15 Or from my mother's womb} and called me by his grace, was pleased 16 to reveal his Son in me so that I might preach him among the Gentiles, I did not consult any man,

    • 17 nor did I go up to Jerusalem to see those who were apostles before I was, but I went immediately into Arabia and later returned to Damascus. 18 Then after three years, I went up to Jerusalem to get acquainted with Peter and stayed with him fifteen days. 19 I saw none of the other apostles-- only James, the Lord's brother. 20 I assure you before God that what I am writing you is no lie.

    • 21 Later I went to Syria and Cilicia. 22 I was personally unknown to the churches of Judea that are in Christ. 23 They only heard the report: "The man who formerly persecuted us is now preaching the faith he once tried to destroy."

Once for all -Hebrews 9:26-28 26 Then Christ would have had to suffer many times since the creation of the world. But now he has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to do away with sin by the sacrifice of himself.

    • 27 Just as man is destined to die once, and after that to face judgment, 28 so Christ was sacrificed once to take away the sins of many people; and he will appear a second time, not to bear sin, but to bring salvation to those who are waiting for him.

God has given “All things Pertaining to Life and Godliness”

§ 2 Peter 1:3-4 3 His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who called us by his own glory and goodness. 4 Through these he has given us his very great and precious promises, so that through them you may participate in the divine nature and escape the corruption in the world caused by evil desires.

    • Peter maintains that the Bible doesn’t claim to teach us everything on every subject, but it does claim to teach us everything we need to know on every subject to please God.

    • Everything we need to have true life and please God is revealed in the Bible!

    • This is precisely why God does not want us to tamper with the Bible.

    Summary:

    • God has all authority. He has delegated ALL Authority to his Son.

    • His Son delegated Authority to His Apostles.

    • Through the Holy Spirit, the apostle’s have written the Word through “Epistles.” (Letters) and these letters have been put into book form. (We call it the “Bible”)

    • Through the terms of the New Covenant we know:

    -how to worship God,

    -how to be obedient,

    -how to be saved,

    -the government of the church

-and how to live our lives as a Christian.

    Hello Selene:
Your question can be taken several ways. I am not sure what you are asking.
As Christians we rely on the Word of our Lord. (John 17:17 Sanctify them through thy truth: thy word is truth.)

I am not sure if you are referring to this (His Word) or whom we hold our faith in?? Christians put their faith in the Son of God and His Blood that cleans us daily.
As a Christian, I do my best and Christ makes up the difference!

I know I have run in circles with my answer(s), but that's because I don't understand your question.

May the Lord be with you.

    Hello Charles,

I am sorry that you did not understand my question. I wanted to know what you consider to be the pillar and the foundation of the Truth?

    Selene:
You asked the same question again. LOL

You responded to something that I wrote on the Word of God.
In regard to what I wrote, I showed that we are to trust in the Word of our Lord. In showing this, I wrote how "authority" was delagated from God to His Son and then from Jesus to His apostles and we are to trust in His apostles and the Word they wrote through the Holy Spirit.

"Pillar and foundatiion of the Truth" could be answerd as "God's Word"
"Pillar and foundation of the Truth" could be Jesus Christ as the "couner stone of the house God is building." (HIs KIngdom)
"Pillar and foundtion of the Truth" could be associated with the death of Christ and Him as our supreme sacrifice.

I am not trying to be smart with you, so please don't take it that way.
I have been a Christian since August 1970. I was born again on Aug 31, 1970. By the way, August 31st is the month and day I married my wife Crystal in 1963.
We celebrated our 47th anniversary last month.

I looked at your profile and noticed you love the beach. We do also. We just spent three months in our 5th wheel RV on South Padre Island, Texas (Mustang State Park). We loved it.

Hope I said something that you asked for.

May the Lord be with you,

    Hello Charles,

I asked that question because the title of your thread says "Why Christians Trust the Bible Only." You responded above that the pillar and the foundation of the Truth could be God's Word, Jesus Christ, or could be associated with the death of Christ and Him as our Supreme sacrifice. My brother, according to the Bible (which is the Word of God), the pillar and the foundation of Truth is the Church (1 Timothy 3:15).

Congratulations on your 47th anniversary. :) Nowadays, it is rare for a marriage to reach 10 years. Your marriage is blessed. I live on a tropical island, so I am surrounded by the Pacific Ocean. As a matter of fact, my village is located on a mountain, and it takes me approximately 15 minutes to drive down to the beach.

    Well Hello Again Selene:

I want to write you a few thoughts on 1 Tim 3:15... (I love this verse, and thank you for quoting it)

“Pillar” in 1 Tim 3:15 is used as a metaphor. Metaphor is a compound word “meta” – means beyond and “pherein” – means to carry on; that is, to carry some meaning beyond the literal. (You probably know this)

During this period of time, around 65 A.D., the pillars of the assembly were known to be James, Peter and John. (Galatians 2:9) in the assembly (Jerusalem and area).

Your version of the Bible, probably the NIV; translates 1 Tim 3:15 as “… pillar and foundation of the truth.” The Greek word here for “foundation” is “hedraioma” and means “ground” or “stay.” Most versions of this verse translate it as “…pillar and ground of the truth.” (No big deal, your translation is okay.)

I’ve said all that to say, 1 Tim 3:15 is probably speaking of the apostles (pillars) in that assembly. They had the Holy Spirit and had the same authority as Christ with His Word and Truth. The assembly was the pillar of truth. This is an assembly made up of mostly former Jews. They upheld the truth.

For the first eight years of the church, the assembly was made up of former Jews, that is, until Acts 10 and you see the first Gentile convert. (Cornelius) The gospel spread to Antioch where there were large numbers of Gentiles and they were not as disciplined as the Jerusalem assembly. The Gentile knew very little about the Law of Moses, much less being under the Law, etc. therefore their backgrounds were not as disciplined. They met in homes and had services etc. rather than a Synagogue.

About 110 A.D. men started to change the truth. Paul warned of this when he spoke to the Ephesian elders. (Acts 20:29ff) There was a greater falling away later in Rome.
Today we need to stick with the TRUTH, God's Word. This is one of the reasong I wrote "Why Christians Trust the Bible Only." Do you think the assembley you worship at is patternend after the first century assembly?
Do you have "elders and deacons and a minister?" That's only what the first century assembly had. Do you call your minister/preacher "pastor, reverend or father?"
I am going to write on this soon. Look for it.

What island are you on in the Pacific? Adak? I almost got stationed there when I was in the military. How about Hawaii? My neighbor owns a home in Hawaii.

I’m just guessing where you live. lol
I am retired from IBM. I was a field engineer. While with IBM, after a terrible storm in Hawii, IBM picked five men to send to the island to take care of networking and computer problems. I was one of the five and we stayed a couple of months. I flew my wife and one of my sons (I have two sons) over to be with me. Boy did we have a great time.

It "was" a beautiful island, but many would like to leave the island now due to the volocano smoke etc. My neighbor is one of them that would like to leave. Her and her husband work for the immigration service there in Hawaii.

    Hello Charles,

Yes, our Church is indeed patterned after the first century assembly because our Church is Apostolic. Yes, we definitely have all those three. :) God promised us that He would be with us and guide us in all Truths until the end (John 16:13). God promised that the gates of Hell will not prevail against His Church (Matthew 16:18) and we know that God speaks the truth. Christ sent the Holy Spirit to dwell in His Church (John 20:22 and Acts 1:2) and Christ is always the Head of the Church and therefore always in charge as He acts through HIs ministers just as He did through His Apostles (Ephesians 5:23). It is for these reasons why St. Paul says that the pillar and the foundation of Truth is the Church.

I live on the island of Guam, which is located southeast of Japan. The island is very small and one can drive around the entire island in three hours (2 hours if you drive fast). Our sister islands to the north are much smaller.

    In Christ,

I said in my last post that I was almost stationed on Adak. That was incorrect, it was Guam that I almost got orders for.
At that time I was in the Navy and was in the Naval Security Group. Are they still there?
Later, I went into the USMC. (4th Marine Division, 4th Recon).

I am guessing your church group is the Orthrodox Church that broke off from the Catholic Church (around 300 A.D.) when the Pope declared himself equal with God?
Did you read my writing on "What is the Definition of the Church"?

    Hello Charles,

What a small world. :) Yes, Guam has a military base here. You may have heard of the military build-up here.

I am from the Cathoic Church, and the Orthodox Church did not break away from us because the Pope declared himself equal with God. The Pope did no such thing. Our Orthodox brothers broke away from us mainly because of cultural and political reasons. If you look at the doctrines of the Catholic and Orthodox Christians, they are almost identical. As a matter of fact, our Orthodox brothers can receive Holy Communion with us because they kept all 7 sacraments.

It was in the 11th century when Rome and the some of the Eastern churches split. I say "some" because not all of them split from the Roman Catholic Church. The Eastern Catholic Church comprises 22 of the 23 autonomous particular Churches in communion with the Bishop of Rome. These churches are in full communion with the Holy See and are members of the Roman Catholic Church. However, many of them usually refer themselves as simply "Catholics" rather than "Roman Catholics" because these Eastern Churches follow the liturgical traditions of the Alexandrian, Antiochian, Armenian, Byzantine and Chaldean rather than the Latin liturgical rites. Only the Maronites in the East call themselves "Roman Catholics."

The split between the two was due to cultural and political differences. Like the Roman Catholics, the Orthodox Church have their own Pope because they are Partriarch like us. Not many people realize that the Orthodox Church have a Pope. It has always been the Roman Catholic Pope who gets all the news coverage. At any rate, in addition to the language barrier (Rome spoke Latin and the Orthodox spoke Greek), the authority of the Roman Church was contested. Our Orthodox brothers believed that the Patriarch of Constantinople should have authority over all the other Patriarchs. The Patriarch of the Roman Church disagreed because we were established by the Apostle Peter while Constaninople was established by the Apostle Andrew. In the Bible, Christ gave the authority to the Apostle Peter to take care of His entire flock. Only St. Peter was given the keys by Christ. These keys symbolized authority. The split between us and our Orthodox brothers occurred in the 11th century after years of much argument. However, we have always been in dialogue with them, hoping to heal that rift.

    In Christ,
    Selene

    Selene:

I probably should not have said what I did regarding the split between the Catholics and the Orthdox group. I was on the Orthrodox forum ([email protected]) for several years. I was emailed this information about the Catholic/Orthodox split from one of the Orthrodox forum members some time ago. The member goes by the name of Daniel and is in their seminary.

I do not respect the Catholic organization at all. I do love the people, but do not like the organization.
Yes, the Orthrodox organization is about the same as the Catholic.

    Hello Charles,

We are not an organization. We are a Church, and our Orthodox brothers is also a Church. We are Apostolic Churches and we recognize each other as such. Yes, the Orthodox has identical doctrines as the Catholics.. However, the Orthodox and Catholics do have a few disagreements, but they are very minor. I'm not surprise to hear that. The Catholic Church is not a perfect Church....and then again, what church is perfect? No members in any church are perfect because we are all sinners. When Christ built His Church, He was calling sinners, not the righteous because the righteous already belong to Him. His Church was supposed to be a Church of sinners, and from this Church will come out many saints such as Mother Theresa. :) God bless.

    In Christ,

I have NOTHING against the people, as I've alread said. I spent two years arguing with the Orthrodox organization about some of their doctrines, especially the "Virgin Mary" and topics like that.

Re read my article on "Definition of the Church"..... you will see what the "assembly" is and it is NOT an organziation like a company with a CEO (pope), priests, etc.

I do love you in Christ as I do all people.

    Hello Charles,

I don't see any post in any of this section on "Definition of the Church." Where is it so that I could read it? And again, we are not an organization like a CEO. We are an assembly....a very very large one. :)
