If you don't have to, why bother?

- You don't have to go to church. - Or do you?
- You don't have to pray. - Or do you?
- You don't have to worship God. - Or do you?
- You don't have to read your Bible. - Or do you?
- You don't have to support the church. - Or do you?
- You don't have to help the needy. - Or do you?
- You don't have to forgive others. - Or do you?
- You don't have to witness to your neighbors. - Or do you?
- You don't have to be thankful. - Or do you?
- You don't have to live in the Spirit. - Or do you?
- You don't have to speak in tongues. - Or do you?

There are lots of things we don't HAVE to do. - Or do we?

Is Christianity about sliding by on the bare minimum of effort?
Do we think God is impressed?

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
What are the benefits of speaking in tongues?
What do you forfeit if you don't speak in tongues?
But first, we need to understand that there are different uses (types) of tongues.
Five Uses of Tongues
1) Personal prayer language (speaking to God) See Acts 1:5, 1 Corinthians 14:2 and Acts 19:6
2) Intercessory prayer language (prayer in the Spirit) See Romans 8:26
3) Congregational message (preferably with interpretation) 1 Corinthians 14
4) Worship language (singing in tongues) See 1 Corinthians 14:15
5) Evangelistic language (language of the hearers) Like the outpouring at Pentecost. See Acts 2
Personal prayer language (speaking to God) See Acts 1:5, 1 Corinthians 14:2 and Acts 19:6
Typically recognized as the initial evidence of the Baptism with the Holy Spirit.
A personal prayer language is a precious ability to speak with God whenever you want.
Not that you need tongues to speak to God, but tongues takes it to a new level.
And tongues is the entrance to many other gifts of the Holy Spirit.
Those in the church in Corinth were tongues-speakers.
They were ready to understand and receive all the gifts.
Intercessory prayer language (prayer in the Spirit) See Romans 8:26
Similarly, the ability to speak in tongues is useful in praying for others.
Allow the Spirit to speak and pray the perfect prayer for the situation.
Congregational message (preferably with interpretation) 1 Corinthians 14
This is considered to be the GIFT of tongues. The Holy Spirit delivering a message to the church.
The interpretation of tongues is required to make the message understandable. (edifying)
Worship language (singing in tongues) See 1 Corinthians 14:15
During a worship service, tongues is useful to enter in at a deeper level.
Evangelistic language (language of the hearers) Like the outpouring at Pentecost. See Acts 2
A rare occurrence, but points back to the original outpouring at Pentecost.
Back to the two questions.
What are the benefits of speaking in tongues?
They are listed above. Tongues are an ever-available manifestation of the Spirit.
Speak directly to God as the Spirit speaks through you. Speak to God on behalf of others.
Deliver a message from God to the church, if you are so-gifted. Enter into worship at a deeper level.
Be ready to give an evangelistic message if God calls you to speak.
What do you forfeit if you don't speak in tongues?
All of the above. The Baptism with the Holy Spirit and speaking in tongues leads to a deeper walk.
A yielding of our most unruly member. (our tongue)
What are your thoughts or questions?
Ok, Who are you and what have you done with St. Stephen? (Lol)
What a great topic. That's quite a list of questions and since I get long winded sometimes I'll just answer two of them
- You don't have to pray. - Or do you?
- You don't have to Fast. -Or do you?
Let's go to Matthew 6
Matthew 6:5-13
5 And when thou prayest, thou shalt not be as the hypocrites are: for they love to pray standing in the synagogues and in the corners of the streets, that they may be seen of men. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
6 But thou, when thou prayest, enter into thy closet, and when thou hast shut thy door, pray to thy Father which is in secret; and thy Father which seeth in secret shall reward thee openly.
7 But when ye pray, use not vain repetitions, as the heathen do: for they think that they shall be heard for their much speaking.
8 Be not ye therefore like unto them: for your Father knoweth what things ye have need of, before ye ask him.
9 After this manner therefore pray ye: Our Father which art in heaven, Hallowed be thy name.
10 Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done in earth, as it is in heaven.
11 Give us this day our daily bread.
12 And forgive us our debts, as we forgive our debtors.
13 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil: For thine is the kingdom, and the power, and the glory, for ever. Amen..../KJV
In v5 He says, when you Pray dont do it like the hypocrites do, do it this way instead.
Now if it said "If you Pray" then we could say that we might not have to Pray. But it doesn't say that. It says, "When you Pray" so it seems clear that we are expected to Pray! So, Yes, This is a Commandment. In fact, scripture says we are to Pray without ceasing! So nothing unclear there!
Yes we have to Pray.
Ok now on to do we have to fast.
Oh Look! It's in the same chapter that we're already in!
Matthew 6:16-18
16 Moreover when ye fast, be not, as the hypocrites, of a sad countenance: for they disfigure their faces, that they may appear unto men to fast. Verily I say unto you, They have their reward.
17 But thou, when thou fastest, anoint thine head, and wash thy face;
18 That thou appear not unto men to fast, but unto thy Father which is in secret: and thy Father, which seeth in secret, shall reward thee openly..../KJV
WOW! He went from Prayer right into talking about Fasting! And He does the same thing, He said "when you Fast" no immediately we see that we are expected to fast. First he says how not to do it, then He tells us how to do it. Don't be like the hypocrites get up and shower and shave and come out of your room so that no one can tell that your fasting. If not shaving and staying in your room all day lets them know that (he's fasting today) then dont do that.
The Word puts Fasting on the same level as Prayer in Matthew 6! Can you see that? Everyone knows we should pray, I don't see arguments about that, lol. And now we know that Fasting is very much as important as Prayer is.
DO you fast? Many Christians, good Christians, will tell you proudly, no I never fast. It's a health thing da da da...
But the Lord looks at the intentions of the heart. If this is fast is not a spiritual fast for Him and it is a health Fast or a weight loss Fast, then those are something else. Are your intentions spiritual and Jesus focused. One guy told me he wont fast because he would lose muscle mass he was into health food and working out and all that stuff. But if you enter the fast without the intention of losing weight then you wont lose weight. One chubby Pastor said he Fasts a lot and he said he has never lost weight Fasting.
Another chubby girl has fast for weight loss before but learned the difference between weight loss & Health and Fasting unto the Lord , for Him. So One time she Fasted for the Lord...and she lost a bunch of weight! More than she should have! So it all has to do with focus and attention.. She said she set weight loss fasting aside for this fast and made her Fast unto the Lord in her heart and didnt even think about weight loss...so she got it! Because the intentions of her heart was right regarding the fast.
LOL
Since speaking in tongues is neither a salvation issue nor an obedience issue,
many just shrug it off as if it is of no benefit to them. That is what I am trying to address here.
The list of questions leads to the last one. (no need to answer them all, or any...)
- You don't have to speak in tongues. - Or do you?
Do you understand the different uses (kinds) of tongues and the benefits?
I don't think this bit is well-agreed on. There's a whole segment of the church that doesn't believe tongues even happen anymore. Even among those who do believe in tongues, many would have issues with this list.
Me, yeah I'm the problem... I would have issues with this list. 1Cor 14 is about non-miraculous tongues... these are just people who know/speak other languages. The point of the chapter is "cool it with using all these different languages" and "its better when everyone can understand you."
Prayer in the Spirit is clearly a thing, but by definition it is "groaning that cannot be uttered" which cannot be tongues.
A miraculous gift of tongues for evangelism does exist, but it's exceedingly rare. Most of the people "speaking in tongues" miraculously... uh... aren't. They're pulling a Matthew 6:7, instead.
Have you ever taken a recording of people speaking in tongues and put it through Google translate?
If it was a viable language....it would translate. But the "tongues" I've heard spoken are extremely regional and none are similar to other regions where the practice is claimed.
Not to mention all the many catastrophe that have occurred because people were convinced that they had the gift. Many have died or been stranded in foreign countries because of their beliefs. (Obviously not popular discussion topics)
YES - i C that 100% = thank you
Now LOOK & C = 1 Cor 14:2
For if you have the ability to speak in tongues, you will be talking only to God, since people won’t be able to understand you.
You will be speaking by the power of the Spirit, but it will all be mysterious.
Not only that, but we also who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, even we ourselves groan within ourselves, eagerly waiting for the adoption, the redemption of our body. For we were saved in this hope, but hope that is seen is not hope; for why does one still hope for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we eagerly wait for it with perseverance.
Likewise the Spirit also helps in our weaknesses. For we do not know what we should pray for as we ought, but the Spirit Himself makes intercession for us with groanings which cannot be uttered. Now He who searches the hearts knows what the mind of the Spirit is, because He makes intercession for the saints according to the will of God
The gift of Tongues is not a human/mankind/earthbound language.
Awhile back I was very skeptical about tongues. But it seemed like everyone starting talking about it and I know what that means! They all can't be lying! Sp there is something there. I began inquiring...I had doubts. I heard people saying so and so helped me learn how to do it and now I speak in tongues every day. I could teach you!
And I thought how is that even possible? When we speak in tongues it is the Holy Spirit praying for us right? SO how is he going to teach me how to speak for the Holy Spirit? See my dilemma? I heard that it always comes with the Baptism of the Holy Spirit and scripture says that is up to the Lord's judment when. So I didnt let anybody teach me how. But I kept praying about it and listening to sermons on it and stuff and just continued to wonder about it. Sounds spooky to me!
Then one day I was about to pray not about tongues, I forget what I was going to pray about, but it was something else. And I opened my mouth to begin praying, and Tongues came out! I wasnt trying to speak tongues? I had no clue what was being said! I knew immediately what was going on so I stand down and let the Holy Spirit finish before I pray my feeble prayer, lol. He finished praying n tongues and then I gave my thanks! And then said my prayer. And how do I explain this? It was different after that. I was changed somehow but nothing I could put my finger on. A greater anointing? I don't know. I must have been Baptized in the Holy Spirit and perhaps even promoted in a small way...but no details, no badge of the occasion. I feel like Abraham still!
So there is no way in the world that I can deny or be skeptical of tongues any more. A few times I have woke up speaking in tongues! (Not even Praying yet!)
That's the cool thing about experience. The guy with the experience is never at the mercy of the guy with the doctrine!
Pop quiz, lol.
Who's groans? Ours or the Holy Spirit's?!
Not everyone who is filled with the Spirit is given the gift of tongues.
What number is that in the list? (#3)
Five Uses of Tongues
1) Personal prayer language (speaking to God) See Acts 1:5, 1 Corinthians 14:2 and Acts 19:6
2) Intercessory prayer language (prayer in the Spirit) See Romans 8:26
3) Congregational message (preferably with interpretation) 1 Corinthians 14
4) Worship language (singing in tongues) See 1 Corinthians 14:15
5) Evangelistic language (language of the hearers) Like the outpouring at Pentecost. See Acts 2
Why you don't have to speak in tongues - Or do you?
My tongue speaks at every opportunity....and that in a non native language, but who can understand it? I certainly do. Even here at this forum, many have no idea what I'm saying; they might even think I'm blaspheming.....because their native language is preferable to them.
....and what is my/ their native language? is it not the language of self justification, of survival of the fittest and relegating those who poke in the eye to hell.
.....so, what is the language my tongue speaks when opportunity arises? It is the good news for the broken hearted and hope for the despairing. It is the message of the wonderful works of God. Acts 2:11
.....further; listen to Peter's explanation of what and how this fits together....Acts 2:22-36
It is too often assumed that speaking in tongues is about making physical sounds in an unlearned/ foreign language......and this may well be in certain circumstances, however what is missed is what was/ is spoken of/ about.
How many manifestations of the modern phenomena of 'speaking in tongues' shares the message of the resurrected Jesus, of hope for the hopeless and comfort for the downtrodden of sin?
From my experience in circles that practice 'speaking in tongues', gobbledygook and self engrandisment has been the order of the day.
