1 John 3:

2b We know that when Christ appears, we shall be like him, for we shall see him as he is.

We shall be like him. OK. Make sense. But a chapter later in 1 John 4:

17 By this is love perfected with us, so that we may have confidence for the day of judgment, because as he is so also are we in this world.

Berean Literal Bible:

just as He is, also are we in this world.

Berean Study Bible:

for in this world we are just like Him.

We are to imitate Jesus in the world. We act as he acted.

A similar idea is in James 5:

17 Elijah was a man just like us. He prayed earnestly that it would not rain, and it did not rain on the land for three and a half years.

John and James encouraged believers to see Jesus and Elijah as models to imitate. We are just like them.
