John 3:16. We’ve all heard of it. Most of us can even recite it by heart. But the problem is, we have taken a beautiful verse and overused it to the point of making it mundane and empty. It is truly the Christian Cliche of the 21st century. So how to we reform the clay to make John 3:16 back into the ornate sculpture it should be? By shedding new light on it, that’s how. The following is my attempt at doing so. For God so loved the world. This phrase is so rich, yet we often fail to see it. To articulate this point, here is my personal experience. I feel God using me to be a voice for Him. He is the only reason that I can refrain from sin as much as I do. The thing is, I run away from His perfect invitation so often. I give myself to idols, not realizing that I have become a slave to sin instead of being a slave of God. BUT HE DOESN’T STOP PURSUING ME. No matter how many times I slap God in the face, He keeps bringing me back to Him. This concept of love is crazy for us humans because we would never think of giving such grace. This is the extent of the love that God has on the world. That He gave his only son. This is like the story of Isaac being willing to sacrifice his son on steroids. It is amazing that God loves us as we slap Him emotionally, but it is exponentially more meaningful for Him to love us as we slap Him physically. Here was the most perfect being anywhere being treated like a criminal to save a group of criminals: now what a story! So that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. Here’s the open invitation, and it is incredibly for our favor. We accept something that is the pure essence of truth, and God gives us EVERYTHING. Happiness, eternity, love, grace, all we could hope for. And all of these things are fulfilled by God, wrapped with the blood from the cross. So the real question: have you accepted the rich invitation? And if so, do you recognize it, or has it become just another cliche in your life?
