'And the multitude cometh together again,
so that they could not so much as eat bread.
And when His friends heard of it,
they went out to lay hold on Him:
for they said, "He is beside Himself."'
(Mar 3:20-21)
'There came then His brethren and His mother,
and, standing without, sent unto Him, calling Him.
And the multitude sat about Him,
and they said unto Him,
"Behold, Thy mother and Thy brethren without seek for Thee."
And He answered them, saying,
"Who is My mother, or My brethren?"
And He looked round about on them which sat about Him,
and said, "Behold My mother and My brethren!
For whosoever shall do the will of God,
the same is My brother, and My sister, and Mother."'
(Mar 3:31-35)
Hello there,
The Lord Jesus Christ came to do the will of His Father, He was sent by Him to fulfill His will. Reading these passages quoted above, we see friends and family seeking to serve what they perceived to be the Lord's interests, according to the flesh: for He had been surrounded by the multitude of people seeking healing, and desiring to hear His words; so much so that He and His disciples had no opportunity to eat or to rest. His friends and family went to lay hold on Him, considering that He was 'beside Himself.'
* This was the flesh seeking to tend to the flesh: yet the Lord sought to do the will of His Father in Heaven and to do His work. So, when they called Him, and sent for Him, He did not respond, but looked around upon those around Him and said, 'For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is My brother, and My sister, and Mother.' The Father's will was that they should 'believe on Him Whom He had sent' (John 6:29).
* His friends and family were not doing the will of God in seeking to distract Him from the purpose which He had been sent into the world to do: and though He obviously loved His Mother and His brethren and friends, in the flesh. He did not allow them to take Him away from the work of God which He had come to do.
* The flesh will always war against the spirit, and well meaning friends and family can unwittingly try to distract us from doing the will of God in our own lives out of concern for us: how necessary it is for us to know the will of God for us, which is also to, 'believe on Him whom He (God the Father) hath sent', and walk in His ways: keeping our eyes always on the goal that is set before us, as our Lord did: so that we will not be distracted from God's purpose for us in Him.
'Wherefore seeing we also are compassed about
.. with so great a cloud of witnesses, (the faithful witnesses of Hebrews 11:1-40)
.... let us lay aside every weight,
...... and the sin which doth so easily beset us,
........ and let us run with patience the race that is set before us,
Looking unto Jesus the author and finisher of our faith;
.. Who for the joy that was set before Him
.... endured the cross,
...... despising the shame,
........ and is set down at the right hand of the throne of God.
For consider Him that endured such contradiction of sinners against Himself,
lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.'
(Heb 12:1-3)
Thank you
