I may have to readjust the menu a bit.
My 86 year old dad is going to live with me for awhile. We went to the doctors today and he is doing ok.
He is borderline diabetic and we have to keep an eye on his kidneys. I don't think the filters are working as well as they should be.

As soon as I get a call we will be setting up physical therapy sessions.
But in the meantime I am concerned about nutrition and portion sizes. He isn't very hungry and I don't want to force feed him, although I know he needs to eat. So maybe some of you "older" folks can help me figure out some menu's that will help him eat better.

Today we began with 1-piece of toast and a glass of water.
Before we went to the doctor's (knowing how long that can take) I talked him into 1/2 a bran muffin, 4 oz orange juice, and a handful of grapes.
We were late getting home, so I made egg salad sandwiches of which he ate 1/2, and a glass of water.
For dinner he only wanted 1- activia blueberry yougurt, and is still working on the water.

I keep the water fresh throughout the day.

I baught some prune juice because he was feeling constipated the day before and that seemed to help.

I can buy anything at the market. I have enough food stamps to supply about 6 months worth of food.
I'm just not sure what the best things to buy are.
I know processed foods and fried foods, foods with lots of sodium and "unhealthy" fats are not good.
I usually eat on the fly myself, but I need to focus on his eating habits and perhaps mine will improve as well.

So, If you all care to share with me any issues you have with eating or loss of appetite, portion sizes, or preferences,
I would greatly appreciate it. :)

It's going to be an interesting winter...
that's for sure.
He like oatmeal, and bacon and eggs, and english muffins, most fruits and veggies.
Basically he will eat anything I put on his plate, and that's what I'm concerned about. I want to make sure I'm putting the right things on his plate to eat.

I don't know why he doesn't have much of an appetite the last couple days.
He is on antibiotics and a pain pill for the swelling in his arm (reason for going to the docs "unknown" )
The antibiotics are bringing the swelling down, but there is no infection.
He takes a high blood pressure pill, a pill for gout, a vitamin B-12 supplement, and a tylenol once in a while.

Maybe just all the excitement since I picked him up Saturday morning, went to emergency, and since then it's been non-stop.
The DISH guy came out this morning and got the TV working again. So that helps bring the normal back to watching the westerns.
He sleeps off and on during the day, and then has trouble sleeping at night.
He is having trouble walking with his walker, so I baugh a bedside potty.... I'm not sure if this was a good idea, as it may not encourage him to walk the 5 feet down the hall to the bathroom.

The clincher is trying to keep a relatively civil atmosphere when his girlfriend comes over to bring his medicine or clothes.
She literally HATES me. And I do the best I can to bite my tongue.
But this morning, trying to get ready for the doctors, the DISH guy showing up, and she stopped by with boxes of food I had to find a place for.
A lot of frozen food I couldn't leave until we got home. So I was fighting the clock trying to get everything situated to make it to the doc appointment on time.
And it felt to me she was deliberatly slowing things down, and I got frustrated. After she went outside, I grumbled something under m y breath and my dad heard me and got defensive and offended.
We got over it.

It's been a LONG month for me. I'm still worried about my mother-in-law. I don't know what's happening with Mark and if there will be a funeral.
My back and arm are still killing me. Some days are better than others. But still hard to type even.
I think about all you guys throughout the day, and hoping all is well, and wishing I had more time to spend on here.
But right now, I have to concentrate on my Dad.

(I don't know much about "hygeine" if you know what I mean. I only changed baby diapers some 40 years ago)
It's a whole new world, and the Lord is being so good to me.
My patience has increased considerably and that's all Him not me.

Thank You for any suggestions you may have that could help me create some kind of routine as well as a menu, that I could incorporate as we go along.
Maybe you could share your days, to give me a better idea of what to expect and not expect.
How much should I push him when it comes to stretching and doing light exercise?
What do I do when he says he's not hungry.
How can I make You more comfortable?

If I know what might make You comfortable, it might help me make him more comfortable.

I feel like a fish out of water.
(How do I give him a bath when he can't get in and out of the tub? )
I been watching a lot of elder care videos on youtube.... but talking to anyone about these things, it's hard to find.

Jesus says do unto other's as you would have done unto you, but there is a difference between the habits of a 56 year old and an 86 year old.
Any suggestions would be appreciated.

THANK YOU
and MUCH LOVE
Lynda

It all looks so good! That reminds me, time to go get a bowl of gruel, I mean oatmeal. I forgot to get some more milk, so it'll be water "n" oats today! Lol
We had oatmeal with blueberries and rasberries and a glass of orange juice.
now I want to go back to bed lol.

I usually mix my oatmeal with a fruit cocktail, but I didn't get any on my last shopping trial, I mean test, I mean tribulation...you know what I mean! Having to wear that stupid mask just added insult to injury!

I do know what you mean. We don't have to wear masks in Maine at the moment, but that could change.
It usually takes me a couple hours to drag my feet through the market. If I'm doind a monthly shopping, I hit every isle to make sure I don't forget something.
Always need more milk and eggs and bread though. Then I go to the local store which is 8 miles away vs. the market which is 10 miles.
I think I baught too much this time in anticipation of dad staying with me. But he is eating like a bird, so now I'm worried about everything spoiling. My freezer is packed, so I guess I need to eat more. That may be a good thing, I don't eat enough proper food to begin with. Now I don't have any choice lol.
We had sliced turkey breast, mashed potatoe and carrots and peas for dinner last night. And dad is feeling better today.
Somethings working right.
Praise God!
Hugs

My normal breakfast is cold cereal with fresh fruit
Mine too. I'm a bit unadventurous with food but when we eat out I like to try something a bit different for a main course.

After a meal like that, I guess he is feeling better! Last night, I had a can of beans and a day-old Whopper, which didn't taste too bad, actually! Lol

Speak for yourself. :)
Did I say old? Silly me, I meant to say older, as in older than I was. I'm actually too young to be as old as I am! Something just doesn't add up for me.
Dr. Who, the Chinese, or perhaps Devin and his physics, may have been messing with the time-space continuum. I can't say for sure.
Though I wonder if the enemy is trying to mess with God's set times.
"And he shall speak words against the Most High, and shall wear out the saints of the Most High: and he shall think to change the times and the law; and they shall be given into his hand until a time and times and half a time. - Daniel 7:25 ERV

In human terms I suppose I am old, but I don't feel old, and in terms of my re-birth I am only 44.

My creaking carcass feels like it must be 90, but the rest of me, perhaps half of that.

I used to like hot rum and eggnog...too much!
Stop with the deserts already, will ya? I bet that apple pie is hot and that ice cream is French Vanilla!
You know how hard it was for me to lose 70 pounds? I'm going grocery shopping tomorrow!
This thread already had me dreaming about cherry cheese cake, I'll have you know! Lol
