Hello all. So my dad is concerned about whether or not he is saved. So he originally thought your conscience was the same as the Holy Spirit. I told him no, they arent. So i digged into him some more about why he was so concerned about it. He is trying to use this as assurance. So how would you describe the differences between the two?

What a great question! I have often wondered about this.....I am not 100% sure, but I “DO” know that in the past, I could do many things and my conscience never bothered me at all—- not one iota. These days, if I kill a bug in the house I feel guilty ....lol.....true Story! These days if there is a creepy bug in the house, I get a paper towel , pick the bug up and put him outside.....

If i can’t kill a bug without my conscience bothering me, imagine how it would make me feel if I ever went out and got drunk and chased skirts and did all the other sinful things that I used to do on a nightly basis....

I am a “ New Man” with a “ New Heart” and this new man has a very new Conscience it seems.....it has to be an act of the Holy Spirit That was never in me before....I did not “ change” my conscience—- it was TRANSFORMED.....men can change...they can “ turn over a new leaf”, but only God can Transform ( I think it’s that “ inside of the cup” thing)

I feel like we cant go by our conscience. I know i cant, and i dont think my dad can either. I keep coming back to the fruit of the Spirit in Galatians. I think a good example of this is my ability to take pain pills everyday and even though i know i shouldnt, i rationalize that its ok to do it and that im not hurting anyone else.
The good fruit of the Spirit says dont take them, but i’ve done it for so long, my conscience doesnt even register it as bad.

But the Helper, the Holy Spirit whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things, and remind you of all that I said to you. (John 14:26)

John uses the word παράκλητος, "parakletos" to describe the Holy Spirit. A paraklete is "one who pleads another's cause before a judge, a pleader, counsel for defense, legal assistant; an advocate". (That's from Blue Letter Bible, quoting Thayer's lexicon.) His job description seems to be to teach us, to remind us of everything Jesus said, and to represent us before God when we sin (1 John 2:1).

This would mean that He advises and informs our consciences. Whether our conscience decides to listen to competent spiritual advice is a separate matter.

Hebrews 9 AMP
11 But when Christ appeared as a High Priest of the good things to come [that is, true spiritual worship], He entered through the greater and more perfect tabernacle, not made with hands, that is to say, not a part of this [material] creation. 12 He went once for all into the Holy Place [the Holy of Holies of heaven, into the presence of God], and not through the blood of goats and calves, but through His own blood, having obtained and secured eternal redemption [that is, the salvation of all who personally believe in Him as Savior]. 13 For if the sprinkling of [ceremonially] defiled persons with the blood of goats and bulls and the ashes of a [burnt] heifer is sufficient for the cleansing of the body, 14 how much more will the blood of Christ, who through the eternal [Holy] Spirit willingly offered Himself unblemished [that is, without moral or spiritual imperfection as a sacrifice] to God, cleanse your conscience from dead works and lifeless observances to serve the ever living God?

Calvinism has no assurance of salvation.
Honest calvinist's will question their salvation until judgment day.

The reason is, in calvinism you can do absolutely nothing to be saved.
Therefore it is not up to you.

Since, you cannot do anything at all.
Then, no one knows for sure if God has elected them.

Instead of using the Biblical commandments in Jesus gospel as the method for determining what one must do to be saved.

Calvinist's must hope that God has chosen them without having any way of following a prescribed method for salvation ie the gospel of Jesus Christ, Romans 1:16.

Calvinism can only give you hope that possibly you are saved.
It cannot give you any assurance that you know you are saved.
Unless you are arrogant, and believe God has chosen you because of how emotionally strong you feel about it.

Salvation is not based on some emotional experience you get.
Salvation is based on believing and obeying the gospel of Jesus Christ, John 3:16; Acts 2:38 ; Acts 8:37 ; Romans 10:9-10 ; Acts 22:16.
Calling upon the name of the Lord is how we are saved, Acts 22:16
Not by a feeling we get.

I think the conscience is the natural reaction to the fact that Adam and Eve ate from the tree of Knowledge of Good and Evil. We all have that, even non-Christians. But the Holy Spirit only guides those who belong to Jesus.

This is like the difference between "thinking" and "knowing."

One who thinks is not fully convinced. In the case of salvation, the term is rather "conviction." One who has conviction has confirmation, not by knowledge, but by the second wetness whereby every word is established--which is by the Holy Spirit, by God. Such conviction and confirmation is not done alone or within one's self--within but not by one's self.

Therefore, seek confirmation, and God will answer when the time is right.

This is completely untrue . I’ve been a Calvinist for over 40 years and am now reconsidering those beliefs and have changed several things in my beliefs the past couple of years . I have not doubted my salvation 40 , 30, 20, 10, 5, 2 , 1 year ago and I surely do not now. My salvation rests in Christ alone . And you have painted a caricature of Calvinism . Even though I no longer call myself one I must say the above is not true . It may be with some but it never was with this former Calvinist.

And in Calvinism God does not believe , repent or obey for you that in man’s responsibility. Most Calvinists do not know what Calvin taught much less non Calvinists.

hope this helps !!!

I wasn't comparing you to them.
Please teach me how calvinist theology teaches we are saved?
By faith in Christ. One must hear the gospel , respond in faith and repentance. I will even post Calvin teaching regeneration happens after Faith not before as most Calvinists teach. I will quote him after work today .

Thank you
You are welcome. I cannot begin to tell you how many Calvinists I have to correct and show them what Calvin actually taught . Many do not believe in double predestination for example but that is what Calvin taught who was a disciple of Augustine and he was the first to teach that doctrine . I’ve told many not to call themselves Calvinists and they get mad at me lol

I hope you do not think I am a "dispensationalist " .
Like those who teach two gospels doctrine.

You liked a man named Praise yeshua that called me a dispensationalist,
Quote: "like a good silly dispensationalist"

I want you to know Praise yeshua, misrepresented me alot in our conversation.
He likes to think he knows what you are thinking. At least he did with me.
I did not know I was a dispensationalist until Praise yeshua accused me of being one, haha.
