That has NOTHING to do whether he meant that literally or not. The "words" are "eat my flesh and drink my blood". THE flesh is not HIS flesh. Stop it
It isad you can't see it

once again, Jesus said alot of things

He also said if you do this you will have eternal life and be raised on the last day

why do you take him literally when he says flesh and blood. but not literally when he says you will live forever. and be raised on last day

Yes you should
why are you running.. I have not seen your answer

why do you ignore everything Jesus said especially in the blue

The words of Jesus. Why does anyone focus on a few words. and not all of them,

lets focus on all the words. and also why do we not focus on the results of those who obey?

so in the following I will show ALL the words Jesus said what he commanded, and what those who obey will recieve

In black is the command

In blue is what the one who follows the command will receive

27 Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, ,

Command – Labor for this food that Jesus came to give

Result – The food will endure forever

33 For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”

What is this food?

He who comes down from heaven

Result – Life is offered to the world

35: “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall
never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst.

Jesus is the one who came down from heaven He is the bread of life

Command: Come to him –

Result. You will never hunger

Command – Believe

Result – Never thirst

36: the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out.

Command – Come to me

Result – You will never be cast out

39: that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day.

Fact – All who are given to God

Result – Will never be lost, and will be raised on the last day

40 And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”

Command – See and believe

Result – You will live forever (eternal life) and you will be raised on the last day

47
Most assuredly, I say to you, he who believes in Me has everlasting life.

Command – Believe in him

Result – You will live forever (eternal life)

50 This is the bread which comes down from heaven, that one may eat of it and not die.

Command – Eat the bread

Result – you will never die

51 I am the living bread which came down from heaven. If anyone eats of this bread, he will live forever;

Command – Eat this bread

Result – Live forever

52: and the bread that I shall give is My flesh, which I shall give for the life of the world.”

What is this bread? My life I give

Result – Life of the world

53 Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink His blood, you have no life in you.

Command – Fail to eat the flesh and blood (the bread)

Result – you have no life in you (your dead)

54 Whoever eats My flesh and drinks My blood has eternal life, and I will raise him up at the last day.

Command – Eat my flesh and blood (the bread)

Result – You will live forever (eternal life) and you will be raised on the last day

56 He who eats My flesh and drinks My blood abides in Me, and I in him.

Command Eat my flesh and drink my blood

Result – You will abide in him, and he will abide in you. As he lives you will live also

57 As the living Father sent Me, and I live because of the Father, so he who feeds on Me will live because of Me.

Command – Feed on him

Result – You will live

58: He who eats this bread will live forever.”.

Command – Eat this bread

Result – You will live forever

Jesus came to give life. He said whoever eats this bread (feeds on him ) will get life. So what is it that gives life?

Jesus answers this also

62 What then if you should see the Son of Man ascend where He was before? 63 It is the Spirit who gives life; the flesh profits nothing. The words that I speak to you are spirit, and they are life.

  • Jesus said he was the bread sent down from heave
  • Jesus asked, what if you see him ascend back to heaven (which many of them would in the future after his death)
  • The thing that gives life (the food, the bread, the flesh and blood) is given by the spirit.
  • The food which gives life ARE THE WORDS JESUS SPEAKS as given by the spirit
I honestly do not see why people make this conversation so difficult

Jesus said do this, If you do this, i will give you that.

Its simple..

I have to wonder if it is guilt.. if they are afraid to look and admit they may be wrong. so it causes them to lash out
But I'm not wrong. There is no reason to use those words if he wasn't speaking literally. If Jesus wasn't speaking literally then his questions in verse 61 is completely nonsensical. Why would they be shocked if he was speaking symbolically or metaphorically?

I already told you, He would have provided the means.

And Jesus did not.

Case closed.
Jesus used literal language, then told His disciples this was spiritual. I guess not everyone accepts that. This fellow cherry picks the passage to prove his point, but the entire passage shows him fully false.

Much love!

So on another thread about OSAS a discussion has been raging about John 6. Is Jesus speaking literally when he says "Amen Amen I say to you, unless you eat the flesh of the son of man and drink his blood you do not have life within you. Whoever feeds upon my flesh and drinks my blood has eternal life and I will raise him up on the last day".

Now this is kind of thought experiment. For this discussion we're going to assume Jesus was not speaking literally. With that in mind the experiment is:

What specific words do you think Jesus would have used if he was speaking literally?

Please don't use the l, Jesus would never say such a thing, argument as that's lazy both intellectually and theologically. Please be specific in your replies. Thank you in advance and I'm looking forward to the responses
Is this a Catholic attempt to push transubstantiation on the rest of us?

In context, Jesus was trying to teach Jews who He was, symbolically the bread of life ( spiritual life) and they did not believe. This was a hard teaching for even His disciples because it had a prophetic aspect to it that none of them understood.

John 6:27 "Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.”
They asked Him, "What can we do to do the works of God" (being more interested in performing miracles as He did feeding the 5,000 the day before).
Jesus answered and said to them, 29“This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”
Then the Jews asked for a sign similar to Manna that came down from the sky and fed the Israelites.
Jesus tells them, "I am the Bread..."
"For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
They still did not get the symbolic meaning of "Bread". That we are to believe in Him and in so doing consume every word that comes from Him as spiritual food and nourishment.
So once again, He tries: 35 ... "I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. 36 But I said to you that you have seen Me and yet do not believe."
And again He expands on this theme: 40And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.
The Jews continue in disbelief ... “Is not this Jesus, the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How is it then that He says, ‘I have come down from heaven’?”.."
Jesus again reiterates He is the Bread and if you believe you will have life but adds more, He will offer His flesh and blood literally. And this btw is the literal part we believe in. This is too much for the present confounded Jews ( who simply were not part of the elect) to comprehend and He knows it will get rid of them.
Still the Jews ignorantly and blindly quarreled, 52 “How can this Man give us His flesh to eat?”

TheseJews from his home town took his words " eat my fleah and drink my blood" literally even after He attempted many times to explain it to them. But of course His prophetic implications about His sacrificial death was not grasped by any - which made it even more difficult to comprehend. Even at the Last Supper His disciples still didn't get it. After his death, they were still confused, broken, disillusioned ... until they saw Him. Then they understood the symbolic meaning of the Bread and Wine and continued this practice whenever they gathered together, they ate the bread and drank the wine in remembrance of His bodily, flesh and blood sacrifice.
All in all this was a teaching for us now, not really for them ... prophecy is sometimes not understood until after the events unfold.

Thank you! Finally someone with courage. How is that substantially different than "eat my flesh and drink blood"? Why use those words at all if he didn't mean it literally?

Right....
Christ does not use the words "like or symbolic" He uses the words truly, truly which means really and he says this “is” my body and this “is” my blood. Now what is to question here? What miraculous meaning is this, maybe it is something we cannot comprehend.....but in the end Christ literally in us in some substantial way.....which constitutes a miracle.
