Christianity has often been used to control the behaviour of the populace by political rulers. In , has often been used by those rulers to control the ordinary people.
Herod was made King of Israel by Augustus Caesar, who ruled the first non-Democracy Roman version of Roman Empire.
When Jesus started preaching to huge crowds, Augustus became afraid that he was raising an army against him and o#rdered Herod, who had been made a citizen before he was assigned to "rule" Israel, to arrest him because he could identify Jesus.
Jesus was tried by the resident Roman General and crucified in the typical Roman method. But followers of Jesus carried on their beliefs.
Then, in the 4th C AD, Constantine looked into that religion and remarked, "This is a religion for slaves!" So he set up the Roman Catholic (Universal) Church to be used to control the huge Roman Empire.
He could not admit that the Romans had killed Jesus, the Christ, so he blamed the Jews because that looked better politically.
If "good Christians" seem to support oppressive political regimes like Hitler’s Fascists, it is because they have absorbed the concept of goodness as faith or obedience to preachers and of "sin" as taught by Luther and well-described by 19th Century writers such as Charles Dickens rather than "goodness revealed by generosity" as taught by Jesus.
Another example is the way the Roman Catholic schools were used to "beat the "Devil" out of the non-Christianity of Indigenous children and adults.
I know there are many many good Christians who do follow the teachings of Jesus and show their belief by helping others by good advice and caring for their needs.
I am just wanting you to know how "Emperors" of all sorts have used it to enforce their rule.

Exactly ...and not to mention, illegal. Many aren't appointed through a legal process.
