Mamdani’s socialist taunts of big business are misguided. When big companies leave New York City do to rising costs to operate here, Mamdani’s constituents are the true victims. Already, by last year, JP Morgan Chase, which was founded in New York City more than 200 years ago and has 24,000 employees still in New York today, has started moving workers out of New York by the thousands. Texas has now already surpassed New York as the largest base of its workers with 30,000 employees there, and with another 15,000 based in Miami. Other pillars of New York’s financial community such as Goldman Sachs and Citigroup have similarly been relocating workers thousands of miles away from Wall Street. In earlier years, such global beacons of American capitalism and major employers of choice, from American Airlines and AT&T to Exxon and International Paper fled their historic New York homes for Texas. The loss of such businesses takes away jobs and the vital tax base needed to support infrastructure, social services, as well as educational and cultural institutions, while eroding economic development.

The villainizing of business is regressive, not progressive. History has repeatedly shown that socialism doesn’t work, as ideas that seem good in theory often turn into a mess of government bureaucracy, inefficiency, and inertia, setting society and living standards back instead of moving them forward. Capitalism is truly progressive, as capitalism has been directly responsible for the massive leaps in quality of life and prosperity, feeding the dynamic wellspring of innovation and creative destruction which underlies genuine and societal progress. Our hope is that New Yorkers will continue to keep this dynamic city the capital of capitalism.

Now we will see what happens in NYC under Mamdani.

They said he already backtracked yesterday on the free grocery stores....now saying low cost grocery stores.

Keeping the wealthy in their loft towers and the increasing homeless march upwards. So much for dynamic capitalism!

Rents will be frozen, state-owned grocery stores will be opened, the buses will be free, there will be help with childcare, and it will all be paid for with higher taxes on companies and the rich. Zohran Mamdani has just scored a stunning victory on a platform that, at least by the standards of American politics, places him on the extreme Left. There is just one catch. What Leon Trotsky might have scornfully dismissed as “socialism in one city” is not going to work. Instead, it will simply crush New York.

There is no questioning the scale of the achievement. From nowhere, the 34-year-old Mamdani has made himself the new star of American politics. He has not just won a thumping mandate in New York. He has turned himself into the rising force in the Democratic Party. With President Trump taking the Republicans to the Right, Mamdani may be about to lead the Democrats to the populist Left. With his easy-going manner, and his mastery of social media, he is emerging as the tribune of the millennials.

The trouble is, he will have to make a success of running New York, and that will prove far harder than his supporters imagine. To start with, his brand of socialist economics has been tried and failed repeatedly in the past. Back in the 1970s, the Swedish economist Assar Lindbeck memorably described rent controls as “the most efficient technique presently known to destroy a city – except for bombing”, and endless attempts since then have simply proved the truth of that observation. New York’s existing controls are already accused of sending apartment prices spiralling upwards, and new regulations will only make that worse.

When and if big businesses pull out of the city, they will loose their tax base of exploiting the 'rich' to pay for the socialism.

I saw a video yesterday where Mamdani claimed he would tax people and corporations even if they left NYC!

All he can do by himself is change the property taxes
NY state government is in control of all his other ideas

If you take the poll on the page, you will see 77% want Hochul to block all that Mamdani desires

That's a big IF, in marketing one of the first things you learn is how to adjust to the current climate

Profits from state-owned or large enterprises could be distributed among the entire population in the form of a social dividend, rather than concentrated among a few investors.

Businesses would likely face significantly higher taxes to fund expanded social programs and public investments.

Rather than private investors, businesses might need to pitch their capital needs to community representatives or public banking institutions, with funding tied to social utility rather than just potential profit.

I heard his speech at about 4:00am my time.
He kept saying he had a mandate.
He got 51% of the vote.
If Sliwa had pulled out, Cuomo would have gotten about 49%

The new messiah of NYC and he doesn't even know what a mandate is.

Happily, Albany will stop him and the Pres won't send him funds for his crazy ideas.

Keyword "IF" we shall see, for both instances

Have you experienced the insurmountable cost of the Electric bills those individuals pay up there?

I think the extremist Muslim Socialist was selected into the office. Not actually elected to that office.

NY has been going to Hell for years. Extreme laws that are absurd and unconstitutional. You'd think a Legislature would know this.

Later struck down as unconstitutional. The point being, they tried!

More bad news is in store for NYC. If and when Democrats take the White House and Congress they'll take money from other Americans and give it to NYC to subsidize Mamdani.

I guess the growing homeless numbers in your cities is the legacy of what once was called 'America the free'
I think now it is more in line with 'America the greedy and the fearful' in spite of the advances you have championed.

Babylon was a city of glory as was Egypt in its day but what was it that saw their downfalls.......rapidly?

Cry in your own back yard. Hating America is deviant when your homelands government sucks.

Homelessness

"Progress"

Data from the 2021 Census shows that more than 122,000 people in Australia experienced homelessness on Census night. The rate of homelessness increased to 48 per 10,000 in 2021, from 45 in 2006.

2023-2024

The Australian Homelessness Monitor (AHM) 2024, opens in a new window, led by UNSW Sydney and the University of Queensland in partnership with Homelessness Australia, reveals a 22% increase in the number of people sleeping rough in the three years to 2023-24. In New South Wales, rough sleeping has surged by 51% since 2020, primarily driven by an increase in regional communities.
