Someone told one of my friends that if she had faith, she would stop taking her insulin and God would heal her diabetes. That ended poorly.
common sense goes along way.. i am diabetic i take 2 pills morn and night. the good Lord gave someone the knowledge to make this pill . jack is trying to be part of the name it claim it. i knew of a preacher who had cancer. announced he felt God told him stop treatment ..he did and died

I hang around the Prayer Forum on this board and I do pray for people that I don't know and will probably never see this side of the World to Come. A lot of it is driven by my own emotions, either because I like the person, or their situation evokes compassion and/or empathy. Follow-up is rare. I'm not sure this way is a proper approach to intercessory prayer, but we're told to "bear one another's burdens". (Galatians 6:2)
When I left the evangelical church I sought out Charismatic and Pentecostal fellowships.
These folks were doing a pioneering work to revive the manifestations of the Spirit that
the rest of the church claimed were no longer needed. But literally ALL the gifts
come into play when we minister to people.

1 Corinthians 12:7-11 NIV
Now to each one the manifestation of the Spirit is given for the common good.
8 To one there is given through the Spirit a message of wisdom,
to another a message of knowledge by means of the same Spirit,
9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by that one Spirit,
10 to another miraculous powers, to another prophecy,
to another distinguishing between spirits,
to another speaking in different kinds of tongues,[a]
and to still another the interpretation of tongues.[b]
11 All these are the work of one and the same Spirit,
and he distributes them to each one, just as he determines.

ok then go to the nursing home and tell all the patience
Patience?
they are healed the greatest healing is when we pass and get our glorified body , you have took what i said and twisted it... so once again if you know of sick folks on medicine tell them to stop because they are healed . explain why someone dies
If they believe and serve God they will be healed. The PROBLEM is, many go to church but don't have a clue what God promised His people.

Yeah, the above-mentioned friend did get into the "Name-It-and-Claim-It" movement in college. She still likes to watch Joel Osteen and such. At least they prayed for her when she got breast cancer. I appreciate that.

I read an article a few years ago (unfortunately no longer available online) whose author argued persuasively that the "greater works" referred to healings and suchlike, not to the things that evidenced Jesus' deity (such as walking on water and changing water into wine). Well, the church has been doing healings ever since, and how do you know that none of them were greater than the healings Jesus did? The vast majority have never been recorded.

As for verses 13-14, it all depends on how you understand "in my name", doesn't it? It's not as simple as sticking a few formulaic words onto the end of any old prayer.
Hi Deborah,
Doing "greater" works could possibly mean greater in scope, not the miracles themselves?

BTW, have you ever felt you were being told NOT to pray for something for someone?

Only in the sense of being redirected to the actual issue.
This was different. I thought I should pray for something for someone (they didn't ask for it at the time); I got back that I shouldn't be asking for this, no reason given. I, being a stubborn S.O.B., kept at it (see parable of the persistent widow, Luke 18:1-6) until about 5 a.m. I felt God relented, and eventually (a year later) granted the outcome I had asked for.

I'm still not sure if I was being obedient or disobedient there, or what part spiritual warfare may or may not have been playing out behind the scenes. Weird.

I think praying for each other on the forum is a great idea. But most Christians need to learn how to pray with some authority. This is kingdom business.

Isn't "Blab-It-and-Grab-It" supported by the subject verses of this thread, John 14:12-14?

I still haven't figured out how to understand what Jesus is saying there.

That's interesting. Hard to say whether to follow an outward prompting or an inner drive.

In most cases I steer clear of praying specifics. Did Moses pray for the Red Sea to be opened in front of them?
If we turn it over to God, He has the best solution.

The short answer is "Yes."
But does that mean we have no authority in prayer?

James 4:2 NIV
... You do not have because you do not ask God.

Perhaps we need to compare other "ask and receive" scriptures.
@Cyd has this in her signature line. Notice the caveat.

John 15:7 (KJV) If ye abide in me, and my words abide in you, ye shall ask what ye will, and it shall be done unto you.
