[Matthew 16:21 KJV] "From that time forth began Jesus to shew unto his disciples, how that he must go unto Jerusalem, and suffer many things of the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised again the third day.".........Look closely at this verse, Jesus began to show his disciples he must be killed and rise again; he didn't speak of it before this point. So how could he be preaching the cross before here?............[Matthew 4:23 KJV] "And Jesus went about all Galilee, teaching in their synagogues, and preaching the gospel of the kingdom, and healing all manner of sickness and all manner of disease among the people."

Jesus didn't reveal his death and resurrection to the apostles until here.........[Luke 24:7 KJV] "Saying, The Son of man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men, and be crucified, and the third day rise again.".........How could the apostles be preaching the cross here if Jesus didn't tell them about it yet.......[Luke 9:6 KJV] "And they departed, and went through the towns, preaching the gospel, and healing every where."

They weren't preaching the cross in Christ's earthly ministry, but rather, they were preaching the promised millennial kingdom on earth was at hand, not the cross; they were preaching the gospel of the kingdom.

'The Cross' is not just to be understood as literal but also as metaphor.
Self denial is non other than self crucifixion.
Getting stuck on a couple of wooden planks fixed at right angles to each other misses half the intended picture.

Self denial is the reality of Jesus sojourn .....yes, he preached it by demonstration rather than a theological idea.
