This is what it boils down to: Defining someone as "carnal" is effectively characterizing how often and how hard they fall. As an engineer who writes specs, I have to ask, "How often is too often, and how hard is too hard?"

Being carnal is NOT characterizing how often and how hard one falls.
We all fall...like your post 39 stated.

Being carnal means we are of the world.
This is how Paul understood it and wrote about it.

We cannot be OF THE WORLD and Christian at the same time.

Jesus said:
John 17:15-16
15 "I do not ask You to take them out of the world, but to keep them from the evil one.
16 "They are not of the world, even as I am not of the world.

I know that He was speaking to the Apostles,,,
but this idea is in scrpture.
We are IN the world,
But not OF the world.

Paul said it this way:

Romans 12:1-2
1 Therefore I urge you, brethren, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies a living and holy sacrifice, acceptable to God, which is your spiritual service of worship.
2 And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, so that you may prove what the will of God is, that which is good and acceptable and perfect.


Paul urges us to change/be transformed, from our carnal selves.

Yet that is not the same reason many scoffers laugh and mock at your friend amigo .
But all i can do is pray for them and continue to point ONLY to the TRUTH of the GLORIOUS LORD
and to remind all about the dangers of leaven , of that ecumenical interfaith and anything
contrary to GOD all m ighty . Keep the HOPE ON CHRIST , all affections above .
The lusts , the cares and pleasures in life will choke the WORD and many become unfruitful .
Our focus and our hope must not be in men , in this world , its govts , its kings or its presidents
For that will be the end of all who partake on that road , IF they repent not .
We need to get back to doing exactly what JESUS had did
and later the apostels did . AND none of them had hope in this world , its politics , its men .
IT was all about DOING that which is pleasing TO GOD , to BELIEVE ON CHRIST
to stay stirred up and being stirring up t he others with the pure and holy reminders OF TRUTH .
WHICH also includes the warnings .

there are no true carnal person that can call themselves a christian, once the Holy Spirit dwells in us we become victors over the flesh and can dismiss it's callings. also i remember;
Genesis 4:7: Sin desires to control you, but you must rule over it.

Because Christiandom has become over-spiritualized, they have:

1. Rejected our soulful needs
2. Deemed everything of the body, flesh, carnal and sinful.

Notice the context of "Galatians 5:17" is "desires" of the flesh, not needs of the body. Big difference. Jesus said man does not live on bread alone. This is a soulful observation. It acknowledges our need for bread to live. Attending to this need is not sinful.

The gnostics (at lease some) thought that everything physical is permitted because the physical body is separate from the spirit.

This is not true.

The days on earth are numbered and it has an end .

There is no city here on earth , no place , no house that shall remain .

The over-spiritualized imply it if not say it outright. You know them by their fruit in denying the needs of the body OR in contemptuously treating attending to these needs as inherently sinful, aka fleshy, worldly.

One way they deny the needs of the body is to ignore those passages of Scripture that address them. For instance, Jesus did not start by saying give to God what is God's; he started by saying Give to Caesar what is Caesar's. In the same way, he did not say to first give your gift to God; he said to go make amends with a brother who is in conflict, reconcile with them first AND THEN bring your gift to God.

This soulful attention is a reflection of Creation. God did not rest first. God worked first for the furtherance of the material world. We are to do the same 6 days per week. This is why we are supposed to Sabbath 1 day per week; we aren't supposed to be all spiritual and Sabbath 6 days per week. As Paul said, those who don't work shall not eat. The over-spiritualized shutter at such harshness as justice requires.

This is so true. I know of at least one church, completely full of abomination, yet likes to feed food to the poor, but the gospel is silenced. Someone I know once walked in that place holding a bible a few years ago and got yelled at.

There was a church choir singing in a Piazza here near me. (for Christmas)
The girl making the presentation said that Christmas is about family, friends and getting along with everyone.

No mention of Jesus.

I believe we are BOTH a physical Christian and a Spiritual Christian

That's how I see it too. I call it a balance between the soul and the spirit, the body and the divine. I can't be Bible reading so much that I get fired from my job. (My wife wouldn't like that too much).

Not all things carnal are sinful. My wife and I often watch funny Youtube vids of babies and animals. In a recent vid, a 1-month old was hungrily suckling on a bottle. The care provider removed the bottle. The infant communicated this was unacceptable behavior! The bottle was returned and all was right with the world as far as this precious child of God was concerned. She physically needs the milk (carnal) and there is nothing sinful about it.

Maybe you need to define what you mean by a “Carnal Christian”. I understand it to mean a Christian who is influenced by “the flesh, which means every single one of us to some extent. Those who claim to have “walked in the Spirit” for an extended period of time describe it like an altered state of consciousness, it was not completely volitional, and it was not permanent. If you claim that we lose our identity as a "Christian" every time we yield to the desires of the flesh or sin nature, you're bringing up a whole set of psychological and pastoral problems.

I'll define it but Paul already did.
He said that if we walk in the spirit we will not be walking in the flesh - and V V.

As far as I can understand scripture...it is not possible to be both carnal and christian.

To be Christian means to walk in the spirit and NOT in the flesh.

One cannot be both a christian....walking in the spirit

OK How do I word this?.....Spiritual and physical......Applying Christianity in the spiritual and physical and our spiritual and physical nature. As long as we have blood pumping through our veins we are physical. Our needs and wants and desires and passions and understandings are what we struggle with. With Bibles in hand we attempt to understand the spiritual and apply it to the physical. Without the spiritual there is no hope, without the physical nothing matters.

Christians have a tendency to consider our wants and desires and passions as evil......wrong thinking. The devil did not give those to us......he did not give us anything. God gave us our wants and desires and passions. Without them Adam would have never left the riverbank, he just would have kept on fishing and Eve would have been left alone to fend for herself. And the human race would have ended there, no babies and no cities. So yes without our wants and desires and passions there would be not sin, but then nothing would happen, good or bad.

So our job is to understand our wants and desires and passions. And to understand sin.....Sin is at our door and it desires to have us....Genesis 4:7 And we must master our wants and desires and passions so that sin does not creep in. The leaven in the mix, it has to be there and we must be master over it.

The Apostle Paul explained the spiritual....the meat of theology. And it is for us to apply that spiritual to our lives and let it guide our physical actions. Our thoughts and actions....the spiritual to guide our wants and desires and actions.....How do we do that? Prayer and walking with Yeshua everyday, never leaving your thoughts.

Never leaving our thoughts is the key.....for living a spiritual life.

My motto.....Be good and do good.....in short.

some things ARE evil...
For instance, love is good.
But if we love someone other than our husband, it's not good.
And today not only does this happen very frequently, but the temptation is conceded.
